England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

I find it bonkers that people think the omission of JWP, Lingard and Watkins is tournament ending for England. Arguably Gareth has picked the best 26 available to him given the circumstances.

Hopefully he'll wise up with his tactics. If he plays 3 at the back with 2 DMs then we'll be in trouble. I hope he goes with two box-to-box midfielders in front of 3 CBs.

Weird isn’t it. It looks to me like he’s got all the hyped names in with a few fringe players that may or may not be good enough missing.

Has Pickford ever had any debate on his England's #1 status despite being bleeding awful for ages?

Hopefully England do just enough to ensure Waistcoat gets a new long-term contract. Win R16 on penalties and narrow heroic loss in QFs should be enough?

Does it matter? England are not winning the Euros anyway with a manager like Southgate. Happy to bet any amount on that.
How many teams should be in the tournament? Should it just be a single match between France and Germany?

I'm not a massive fan of Southgate but that's not fair given he got us into the semi-final of a World Cup, which was a game we really should have won, too.

It’s not a statement of fact, it’s an opinion. I could obviously be wrong here.

It’s based on a combination of how he’s approached games and his squad and team choices.

England have a lot of gifted players that will win games regardless of who is the manager which explains the World Cup run.

Spare players in case of injury, loss of form or rest: Johnstone, Mings, Phillips, Sterling

We could do with stronger options at CB. But, overall, that's very strong.
Your first 11 is mental - you have 3 central defenders with 2 of them playing out of position. You have a 17 year old playing in central midfield also. This also highlights just how poor the midfield options are for England - you have Henderson who probably isn't fit and a 17 year old in there (yes he is talented but he should be there for backup at most) and 3 other midfielders out of a possible 5 yet he can find space for 4 right backs. This must be the most unbalanced squad I can remember.

Not sure if the squad numbers give a hint to the pecking order but:

That first 11 players including the goalkeeper look like a team that will start the opening game barring injures

We don't have good enough midfielders, we don't have the coaching nouse to play with wing backs or even 4 3 3 without being exposed defensively continually. Sure we have good attacking players and some decent defenders, you actually need a balanced system and competent coaching to do anything with them though. Going for the formation that requires the least coaching and is least vulnerable would make sense. 4 2 3 1, sit deep and play on the counter continually.

Southgate might luckbox his way through, again. Most likely if tries to be clever with 3 4 3 or similar, he gets found out, finally, we lose all 3 group games and are on the first plane back.

England are one of half a dozen teams who could win it.

everyone needs a bit of luck, and they are a contender. They doesn’t mean they are going to win it.

with the semis and final at Wembley it could give us that little advantage needed.

No it is football and there is room for low probability events, like Villarreal beating us in the final. My statement is based on my perception of the probabilities. I can obviously be wrong.

Do people think that if he took one less RB and Watkins or JWP instead, the probability of England winning the Euros increases significantly?

If his first team includes neither of Mount or Foden he should be taken around the back and shot.

Yeah. He's literally our best player and we're not so bad. I'm definitely biased but Kalvin is absolutely mint.

Yeah, he's a good player. Find it interesting that Southgate has opted to play him more of a box-to-box midfielder than a holding midfielder. I feel it takes a lot from his game, such as his passing range.

Anything but a group stage exit will see him keep his job I expect, the FA seem to absolutely love him for some reason.

The nation will turn on him this summer, I'd love to be wrong and us have a great tournament though.

Exactly, the players that have been omitted are just fringe players. I'd take Trent over all those players that have been left out.

Coady and Mings selection is weird. 4 RBs is even weirder. He just decided to take the best players and biggest names, instead of looking for balance. There is no way i would have dropped JWP, when you only have 5 midfielders and one of them missed half the season.

No chance of group exit. These days you only need 3 points to qualify. Portugal qualified without winning a game in 2016.

I can't get my head around the 4 RB's really, especially if he sees a couple of them as right sided centre backs. We've either got a load of RB's, or a load of CB's where only some of them can do a "job" in that position. Whilst sacrificing the middle of the park and up top.

I think Greenwood being injured will be a big miss as well. Outside of Kane, we're missing that one player who you'd bet your house on scoring.

Someone please explain to me just how Southgate can justify leaving Henderson in the Euro squad????

I mean, did we expect anything else from Southgate. A squad picked on reputation not merit for the most part.

He lucked out with the draw and went out against the first decent team they played against.

He's crap.
He's a clown, worse than Rodgers. Very hard to wish him and this team well.

Which one? Both deserve to be in, there aren't any better alternatives.

Jordan Henderson is in the squad and he's been out since February but he's going to be fit and in good enough form to play? That's just poor on Southgate.

Well, nothing controversial when you can select 26 players instead of 23, Watkins, Lingard & JWP omissions aren't controversial or big calls, Pope injured so Johnston gets the nod.

players club distribution: -

  • MUFC & MCFC= 4 players each
  • CFC = 3 players
  • LFC, AVFC, BVB & EFC = 2 players each
  • THFC, LUFC, AFC, WHFC, Wolves, WBA, & ATM = 1 player each
  • 3 players play outside the PL.

LCFC the only top 10 team with no English player called up for Euros.
