Empty Old Trafford

Only way this sort of thing would work is if you physically prevent daytrippers from getting in. And we know how ugly that could go.

Oh yeah they would just lash out with megastore bag full of merchandise, bet none of them could knock skin off a rice pudding.

Pretty much. A sea of people should be barricading Old Trafford so much that no one gets in, not even people going for the megastore.

Feck anyone still willing to waste money on that shit and/or unwilling to give a strong message to the owners.

feck that attitude mate, I’m travelling up from London at least 15 times this upcoming season, 60-80 quid travel each time, potentially some 10 hour round journeys.

United’s in my blood, my Mum’s from Manchester and my Nana was catering the welcome home event the night of Munich when they got the call about what happened.

United is a global club and fans who live elsewhere shouldn’t be looked down on in my opinion. Plus us London lads aren’t exactly known for being soft haha.

Are you a match going fan? Even the 1958 aren’t calling for anything close to that so I don’t really see where that’s coming from.

You don't sound like a tourist so definitely wouldn't brand you as that type of supporter

To be fair I might not really know what’s meant by daytripper. I assumed it meant anyone outside of the Manchester area.

My mistake if I got that wrong mate. Still fired up and furious from yesterday, can’t sleep so a bit grumpy haha.

Couldn't care about that lot. I know that going to matches is like an addiction for some people, but this is a case where those people ought to wake up because you will make it far worse for yourself and for others if you don't.

Has some of them ever known what it's like to quit smoking? It's the same moment when one ends up at crossroads now.

Meant foreigners who buy tickets over face value then spend a fortune in the shop. These guys have absolutely no idea of the damage that's doing.

I get where you’re coming from but I think it’s all about not turning on each other as fans. Fact of the matter is the tickets are paid for now. Realistically, the stadium will never be empty. I think eye catching/big protests seem to have more of an impact on the media. During the Brentford match earlier even the lads with the spray painted bed sheet got a ton of attention. I’m all in favour of that kind of thing but respect however anyone wants to protest.

Yeah that’s not great at all. Prices out normal fans if anything. I lived abroad in Eastern Europe for a fair spell and went football all the time. Was about £5 a ticket equivalent at most and was a true community thing. Complete opposite of the tourist/megastore crowd so totally get where you’re coming from mate.

Are any season ticket holders on here? If so would love to know what they're gonna do?

Yes there are many, just look at the Tickets thread and not one ST holder I know will be boycotting this match

The feck you mean what am I talking about? Wasn’t exactly complicated mate. I got a ticket for this without realising it was the protest. Fairly simple concept:lol:

There is no boycott planned for this match - it's just Twitter noise from well meaning but ultimately powerless accounts who have little connection to actual match goers

The ground will be full at kick off so don't feel bad about going and just join the pre-match protest

Still don't understand why fans (incl ST holders) can't properly boycott a handful of high profile games, because that is all it would take. Match going fans have so much power but they're just conditioned into not realising it / distracted from it..

Just like us brits in general are useless at properly protesting, united fans are useless at actually forcing change.

As long as the ST holders do it thats what it takes. Will be quite quiet if they dont show up and yes that will get Glazers attention

Pre match protest they just laugh at, my god

I do agree it's unfair on anyone who's spent money to come to OT.
But if not this then what?

I'm ready to boycott as long as you pay for my ticket, shall I send you my PayPal details?

Thing is we have just paid £800 to watch United so it’s kind of hard not to turn up. I also don’t think empty seats are powerful enough to send the message we need to at the moment. Also thanks to Glazers we can only boycott 9 games if we want to hold onto our season ticket for next season.

mate from Australia paid £200 off a scalper for the opening day. Only match he could make, first in his life. Gets up 40+ times a season, usually between 11 and 430am kick offs, and had never been to OT before. Said it was the best day of his life. Saying he’s not a real fan cause he’s a foreigner, or cause a scalper took advantage of his desperation, is a disgrace.

It does seem majority of the match going fans are quite happy to sit there and watch Utd lose, long as they get a evening out they're happy, its only them that have the power to do anything,
People can protest but if the stadium is full what is the point??

I'll sell you my season ticket for £700 for the rest of the season if you want to buy it and not turn up?

Precisely mate, no balls in this fanbase

Couldn't care less people going to matches are the reason they won't go anywhere

I'm happy to. But it needs to co-ordinated and done properly. Last time there was one planned, I just didn't hear about it 'til the last minute.

Now, there's lost of chatter about "day trippers" not doing it, but I sit bang in the middle of the Stretford End, among loads of hardcore week-in, week-out fans, home & away, and there just doesn't seem the interest in it from them. I know I'm generalising based on a few louder ones who share their opinion, but I reckon if I walked out during the Liverpool game (as I hear the plan is, I probably need to check on socials) a lot around me just wouldn't. In some cases cos they're older blokes (Like 60+, I'm 50 btw!) & oddly enough they're not getting their news from Twitter & they just haven't heard about it.
That feels like it's the struggle for me, getting enough people to do it. Going in and leaving makes the most impact, or going in late. Both make a visual impact and an impact around the ground too. Forget all the "cancel your ticket" nonsense, that's usually from people who never go. There would be plenty to take your place, even now with the football as it is.

One thing I did notice at Brighton was the sheer amount of stewards. I've not see it like that ever I don't think. Obviously Liverpool games and stuff there's always been a lot of coppers, but this was the club with lines of extra security everywhere! They're clearly worried. Also makes me wonder about the new "attend at least 10 games or lose your ticket" rule, is that to discourage boycotts? Why else would they suddenly do this? It's not like empty seats has been a serious issue at OT, certainly not in the lower/better areas at the ground. (It did also occur to me that it might be that the football was crap! 10+ years ago they guaranteed usage of tickets by playing mostly good football & winning stuff! )

Yeah hardcore fans won't do anything because they are blinded by loyalty to this club

The fans could boycott the stadium for the visual but the Glazers have already pocketed the money anyway. That’s the problem, every single season ticket holder can give up their ticket but there’s a queue of fans willing to buy it they could sell out OT three times over.

Not sure that's why. I think they have no faith in the owners either, I think they just see different campaigns ebb and flow and have seen that nothing has changed. And they just do what they do, which is turn up and support United.

Just like us brits in general are useless at properly protesting, united fans are useless at actually forcing change.
“I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it.”

you can go in and walk out, that doesnt affect your attendance.

I am also a season ticket holder and as things stand, won’t be boycotting the Liverpool match. Not that I am against this sort of protest at all…

As others have said, for this sort of protest to work, it will need collaboration and buy in from all the big fan groups. The 1958, TRA, M.U.S.T etc. When that happens, and I believe it will very soon, I’ll stay outside for any match and join in any protest.

But every match goer I know can see that a protest at Liverpool game will fall flat because it hasn’t been properly organised.

Would glazers care though? That’s what we need to think because my point is that it’s not hurting their pockets but it’s hurting our game’s result. And glazers don’t care about the results as long as they get money.

Would it even affect our game? These spineless picks were actually better without fans during lockdown. So a win win for me. Harsh on the daytrippers but hey

The sum of what you've added to this conversation is "bloody foreigners", so I wouldn't be throwing stones if I were you.

Exactly how I feel because they seem to have no understanding of what damage buying merchandise is doing

Not sitting in seats that you already paid for doesn't strike me as an effective form of protest.
Well, it could still make the point visually, and therefore in terms of publicity, that the fans have had enough. It wouldn't look good for the Glazers advertising agency. Problem is, in the UK people don't seem to want to go out on the streets even if they're starving.
