Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

Beat Radhan yesterday and was just wandering around and came to Weeping Peninsula. It’s not particularly obscured and I’m ripping through the enemies with ease so I’m guessing I should have played it much earlier in the game.
Yeah, you can go there even before Margit I think.

poor Blaidd, its rare that a game makes me connect with an NPC but a kinship was formed in the fires of battle against Radhan and it felt shit to have to kill him after he went mad without Ranni

I’ve sliced my index finger using a potato peeler and the big plaster I’ve got on it severely hampering my attacking  pressing L1 and I’m just sliding off the button.

I get that, but having a wife and 2 young kids, I don't have time anymore to spend hours playing it. I only get 2 hours maybe at night, initially I hated the game because everything would kill me instantly but doing it this way at least gives me some enjoyment out of the $90cdn I spent. Maybe 10 years ago I would have tried to challenge myself more and get good

You get me wrong mate, I'm not saying you are playing the game in the wrong way, I'm just saying you can miss the moments that really make a FROM game.

I'm in the exact same situation as you so you don't have to explain lack of gaming time to me! But it's worth, imo, savouring these games and not rushing them. But there's no right or wrong way to do it ultimately.

Yeah, this is my first FROM game, I'm more used to easier open worlds like BotW and Witcher 3. But I have felt that 'f yeah' moment a couple times defeating some mini bosses I didn't expect to beat

I was just prancing about Limgrave looking for a cave and ran into another Night Cavarly. Milled him in 2 R2's. Kind of felt like I was the unfair Fromsoft boss there.

Yeah I've actually liked quite a few of the NPCs in this game, despite having a few complaints as to where some of them have vanished to.

I genuinely think the Black Knife Tiche is the best ash summon in the game now post the patch nerf to the Mimic. The fecker doesn't wait around and just charges straight for the boss the second you hit summon . They do insane damage too, and proc bleed quite often. Got mine to +10 and its putting my mimic buddy to shame.

Granted it takes a shit ton of FP to use (around 132!) and is quite hard to get, but I haven't touched my mimic since.

You're definitely overlevelled for him. I think most beat him around level 50-70.

Bear in mind he's been nerfed since the patch too.
50-70?

I try to do everything in an area before going to the "castle" (I don't know if it's a castle in every area yet) and while I could go to the third castle for maybe 5 hours now, I still have some stuff to do and explore in the north. I also didn't do 100% in Lingrave in the sea area. And I'm level 78 already.

How can you be there at level 50 if you don't skip like half of optional stuff?

The amount of runes you get varies a lot depending on how many attempts it takes to clear out certain areas. If it takes me ten attempts to clear a mini dungeon that you clear out in one attempt, I’ll get up to 10x the runes. So levels vary a lot.

Judging by the wiki you’d normally expect to be level 60-70 by the time you approach that area, including if you’d done lots of the underground rivers.

Elden Ring? Completed it mate.

Now to go beat some optional bosses and then wonder wtf I’m going to do with my life.

Easily one of my favourite games ever.

Got the Souls itch now so maybe time to play one them and see if I can actually finish one. I wish Bloodborne didn’t run like shit tbh, I’d love to replay it.

First 2 hours so far so obviously I've done/seen feck all, except a lot of running away. Done some of the key stuff like being able to level up, summon that horse/ox thing, and cleared that camp outside the castle by luring out each soldier  took fecking ages but got all the loot there.

Ashes of war are things you can apply to your weapons to gain a special attack, is that right? Is it best saving that for a better weapon? I started as a Vagabond so just have the starting sword/shield etc.

You can remove the ashes of war and apply it to another weapon.

Ummm sooo...am I supposed to go to the capital first or to Caelid?

Oh okay.

I thought the roundtable hold would tell the order of the main locations and they told me to go to the capital after I beat the 2nd boss.

But after getting wrecked on the way there two times (on the big stairs) I figured this might be the wrong order.

Is there any way the game tells you the right order or is it basically trial and error after stormveil castle?
I mean my first visit to Caelid was at level ~20...i already had my trial&error there :D

Go to Caelid as soon as you get out of the starting dungeon, nice area for beginners

Is it similar to BOTW in that you could go straight to the final boss if you wanted to or are there certain things you'd need to do?

I just beat Radahn so I'm down in Nokstella now. I reckon there's a boss coming but I've fecked my finger and think I'll need to have all healed digits to play effectively.

Are you serious?
Do you maybe play a mage or another ranged character?

As a melee character I struggled heavily at the start of Caelid when I was level ~20.
I stopped my journey there and did the southern part of Lingrave instead, got to level 25-30 and then did stormveil castle without bigger problems.

He's joking

I dunno, probably, I thought Radahn was the boss there but guess I missed stuff

Pretty sure you can't skip Stormveil or The Academy but you can definitely skip Radahn and Caelid and go straight to the royal capital dungeon, as I know someone who accidentally did that. Not sure after that. So it's not as skippable as BOTW but a lot is.

Doesn't the guy at the roundtable hold say to collect 2 great runes (out of 5) to progress or something?

My most recent new character experience was getting Torrent, getting the summon bell then going to Caelid via the beast portal.

Running away from the ball a few times to level up dex to 18, kill the dragon with a flail, running to Lumaria and getting owned by the Knight by the artists shack until I took him down, got the prayer book, got lightning spear.

Go to Caelid via the trap in southern Agheel lake then kill Cleanrot knights for their armour and the Halo Scythe and thrusting sword.

Then ready to play the game properly once able to midroll by leveling up by running away from the ball.

The Lake of Rot has to be the absolute worst place in the game. Pure and utter AIDS.
it's the worst. Also the completionist in me spent way too long killing that stupid fecking ulcerated tree spirit that comes out of the waterfall of rot.

Does anybody else just have zero interest in crafting or spells? I mean I'm the vagabond class so I've spec'd into strength/dex/endurance and have put my faith in my trusty sword and shield so I won't be throwing any spells. But should I look into crafting items? Are they worth it?

Also beat that crucible Knight which was quite a fun battle. Trying to beat the death bird but it feels like a bit of a chore.

I haven't done anything with spells but item crafting does become a lot more important later on with all the status effects and shit floating around.

I also started as a vagabond. I use crafting for those "add fire/poison/blood damage to your weapon" stuff.

I don't use spells but several incantations like "cure poison" or those buffs that enhance your resistance against fire or holy damage.

I've not used a single spell but if I do a New Game+ then I might do a magic build.

I went and did most of Caelid after I had explored absolutely everything in liurnia of the lakes and that felt about right. There are at least two more areas before the capitol after caelid I would say
(not including more secret areas)

Ok, so Caria Manor actually is the first time this game shows us proper souls. Really annoying freaky enemies (those fingers will never not be creepy as feck!), but you can work your way through without feeling cheated, lots of side paths/hidden things to find and do, and an intricate layout. More like it.

Also I'm running duel whips for fun, as for the first time in a souls they are viable. You might say I'm...Dominating with them (giggity).

Funny enough, I started off as Vagabond but ended up with an intelligence build as I progressed, the moonveil katana just made absolute light work of some of the bosses or areas I was struggling with. Going to go for a bleed build once I get the rivers of blood katana.

That’s the beauty of these games, you pick up a weapon you like and you just build your stats around that. In this game it’s especially easy because of the accessible respec (I’ve found about 15 larval tears so far I think…).

Not sure how far you’ve gotten, but Lyndell was pure souls for me. The non linear design of it, the shortcuts, the verticality, the placement of bosses and gate keeping tough enemies, etc. It get like I was playing DS3 the entire time I was there.

You aren't even far in the game!! Man. You should know to give it time

What? I've played plenty. I'm talking about a dungeon design.

My issues are with the engine, the cheapness (and blatantly doing the DS2 thing of having no ideas on how to balance for this one) of the difficulty and the lack of anything pushing the gameplay forward. All of those problems are there from the off.

If the game weren't so sluggish and full of the same old engine issues, I'd be enjoying the dungeons way more. The open world is fine, and I actually like that it still feels souls-y but will be absolutely tedious on the next playthrough.

As an aside, I'm thinking of putting frost on my whips (as I can't do bleed, I'm guessing there will be a bleed whip down the line so dual bleed/frost). Thoughts? Have you messed with the effects much? (I'm going to go right ahead and assume poison is DS2 levels of trash).

Which areas? I already did almost everything west of the capitol (including most of House Vulcan) and the two underground areas Siofra and Ainsel. Did I miss something or do you mean those areas?
