Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

For someone that has no desire to grind or “git gud” I’m having a great time with the magic build.

Nothing wrong with it, wouldn't be in the game if From Software didn't want it there.

Well I finally met Radhan. Got him down to half health first time round but then he disappeared, reappeared and one shotted me. Second time round I died within 40 seconds.

Yeah at some point during the fight you have to essentially ride away to avoid an instant death. They’ve massively nerfed him seemingly cause the summons lasted seconds last week and trying again earlier it was a pretty easy fight with the help.

I’m really enjoying it and it’s a great game but there’s a clear quality difference between fighting through a dungeon/location compared with trawling through the empty world in the hope of finding something.

I’m quite critical of the From games but they’re pretty much 9 or 10/10 games (bar Sekiro - I wasn’t a fan). What annoys me is how their faults are aways glossed over, when they’re are clear issues.

Yeah just killed him third try.

Why is it when you get knocked off your horse your character just fecking lays there for 10 seconds getting battered.

Handy Reddit images for the status effects on the HUD...

The more I play, the more disappointed I am.

This game is full of 'gotcha!' design, the type that DS2 got rightly lambasted for. Endgame areas and dungeons are packed with high HP, high damage, mobile respawning enemies that pretty much discourage exploring and incentivise just running through everything because otherwise you'll never get to the end.

I'm also sick of delayed attacks with hyper tracking, unpunishable combos with varied length that means you have to play passively because you never know which version of the combo the enemy is pulling out. There's also quite a bit of annoying input reading, and of course tons of almost unavoidable AoE damage.

It seems everything has been balanced around using magic and spirit summons, which is simply not as fun, for me, as the classic 1v1 melee fights of previous From games.

I'm nowhere near as far in as you, but I just beat Margit and I definitely felt as though I wasn't being rewarded for perfectly dodging a combo the way I have been in past games.

And the way some of his combos seemed unavoidable in the 2nd phase felt like I was supposed to be summoning and distracting him. The tracking is crazy compared to say ds1, but I've mostly found it on the fun side of challenge so far.

Just beat Godrik. Found him way easier than Margit but probably cause beating Margit made me a lot better. Still suck though, those damn knights in the castle give me grief and that spider thing was too annoying so just skipped past it.

Is the complete lack of direction normal? I don't ever know what I should be doing as there's no quest list or anything. But I guess the jist is go found all the bosses with shards and feck them up.

What level where you all when you defeated Margitt, and why am I so sh*t?

Upgrading your weapon is often more important than your lvl. Finding smithing stones is a chore though if you don't know where they are. I think I was lvl 20 when I beat Margit as a magic build, but I was down to my last 1 hp when he died. I've done a few playthroughs and once you know where the smithing stones are it makes early/midgame much easier because you actually do some damage. If it gets too much you can always summon other players though, but sometimes they just advanced enough to do the whole thing for you.

This is probably the most non-linear game from the developers and I think, they don't give enough direction. The yellow light from the grace points are the best indication of where you're supposed to go. I'd say to find the key to the glintstone academy just look up a quick youtube guide on how to find it and spare yourself the pointless time it takes to find it usually.

Yeah, I won't beat this game.

Maliketh is impossible. Even with mimic. What the hell is that boss. Anime flipping all over the place, mountains of HP, no openings, massive damage, range, AoE - what the actual feck. Dear FromSoft: a fun boss has some weaknesses, too.

Ah right I see the grace points which way to go. Thanks! I've got a list of all the bosses as I have a bit of an obsession with beating everything, so just been going around limgrave finding all the sights of graces and fighting. Find the Crucible Knight tough although I don't feel like it should be harder than what I've already faced!

I think it's because they nerfed the mimic. I was able to do him solo with the mimic tear, but with that being nerfed he's almost impossible. This is kind my problem with the game. In DS3, Bloodborne. I found a lot of bosses memorable and fun. I don't think there is a single boss in Elden ring that matches the best from DS3 and Bloodborne or Sekiro for that matter. They just make some really unfair and hard, but you don't really enjoy taking them on again.

I managed with the mimic in the end but I never want to see this fight again. Boss design is indeed a significant step back compared to previous games.

At what level should you fight Radahn? I beat him on first try and he was piss easy. Perhaps I was too late? I'm lvl 90.

The delayed attacks and hyper-tracking is very annoying and it was never in previous From games to this degree. It's an artificial difficulty.

It's definitely balanced around summoning too. The items required to summon are nowhere near as valuable or rare as humanity, effigies and embers plus they give you ash summons.

You're definitely overlevelled for him. I think most beat him around level 50-70.

Bear in mind he's been nerfed since the patch too.

I don't think there's any set level but that does feel a bit late! I was 65ish I think.

Ah fair enough, I also went out of my way to get some +5 and +6 smithing stones so my +20 Great star absolutely clobbered him. Fecking amazing weapon, that. The ruins great sword looks cool too, but I lack the 15 arcane.

I Suppose I should've done Radahn before Morgott then?

Yes very much so

I beat him this morning on my fourth attempt at around level 50. I know he was nerfed but I found him pretty easy.

You might have been a tad overlevelled.

Morgott took me a million times to beat at the level I killed him. Also, the whole area was really fecking difficult while I utterly smashed Radahns castle to pieces. That was probably a gokd indicator.

Before I put anything in it, can you add/mix/remove the tears you put in the Wondrous Physick Flask?

I'm too scared to put something in if I can't remove it later.

Just waiting for this to download. Fully expect to get destroyed for the first 10 hours as I've never played a souls game before...

I got incredibly lucky on him yesterday in that my mimic and I land to sandwich him and beat him like 5 hits. It was bizarre and pure luck but I’m just glad I won’t have to fight him again.

Stuck on (what I assume) is the final boss atm. On the rare occasion I get to the second phase I get battered quickly.

Beat Radhan yesterday and was just wandering around and came to Weeping Peninsula. It’s not particularly obscured and I’m ripping through the enemies with ease so I’m guessing I should have played it much earlier in the game.

Yes  one of the first areas you should do really.

Just be careful you don't use that method too much, or you will find yourself not enjoying the challenge at all.

The whole point of difficulty early on in Souls games is to teach people how to play and how rewarding it is to finally get good enough at the mechanics. If you over level the whole game, you miss the experience of that big win.

I get that, but having a wife and 2 young kids, I don't have time anymore to spend hours playing it. I only get 2 hours maybe at night, initially I hated the game because everything would kill me instantly but doing it this way at least gives me some enjoyment out of the $90cdn I spent. Maybe 10 years ago I would have tried to challenge myself more and get good

Just put in the cheesiest Souls victory ever when I beat the black blade gargoyle thing that stands in front of the church in Caelid. Kept hiding in the church and waited for him to get bored and return to his original position before attacking him again and then running away. Rinse and repeat. Took 15 minutes but it was worth it :D

Think I've done everything on the map except the castle and whatever is north of there.
