Patch notes:
- Increased the number of patterns of objects player can imitate when using Mimic’s Veil.
That's the important one, I like to put on a show

I got it today, despite not really playing any From games before except Bloodborne (which I loved but never got close to completing as it was too frustrating). I don't really understand what's going on but I like the combat. I feel like the RPG elements may be a bit tough to grasp for someone who doesn't play RPGs basically, with all the runes, skills, potion etc, but I may get there eventually... I probably need to finish Horizon before I get down to this properly anyway.

Bloody slash didn't need nerfing (unless I was misusing it?)
Tbh bosses usually give enough runes to go up a level or two. If I still need a little bit to top off, I'll rune farm for a bit. The only other time I'd farm is if I need runes to upgrade a weapon or ash summon, or if I want to buy something and I don't have the bank.Gotta say its' a bit cheaty, but having the knowledge of a Rune farm makes the game so much more playable when exploring. I'm happy enough to write off 30k runes now for the sake of digging around even when out of potions
So it turns out they did nerf Moonveil...slightly. The damage is untouched, but they nerfed the poise damage a bit which makes sense. You were able to pretty much stagger end game bosses in 2-3 hits of transient moonlight, now it takes a little longer.
Its still by far the most OP weapon in PVP though.
Yeah it's defintely overwhleming with all the different rpg elements thrown at you. There's almost too many mechanics in the game to grasp early on.
As a starter for 10 try to understand the levelling up system first. Runes are your currency in the game that you need both to level up and buy shit. You can consume the ones in your inventory to add them to your tally (don't consume the boss ones as these can be used to craft weapons). If you go into status you can see how many runes you need to hold to level up one of the attributes which you do at sites of grace. Vigor is your health bar (red), Endurance is stamina (green) and also important for how much equipment you can carry and still be mobile (tip - try to stay at medium load or below). The other ones are build specific but to use certain weapons and shields effectively you'll need to have that attribute levelled up to the minimum requirement which you can see by highlighting the weapon in your inventory. For example the axe you get from defeating Godrick requires you to have Strength 34 and Dexterity 22 before you can use it.
Another quick pointer for your basic potions - collect golden seeds at those small golden trees you see dotted about to increase the number of flasks you can carry and collect sacred tears to increase the potency of them (i.e. fill up more of the bar). You can do both of these upgrades also at sites of grace.
Thanks a lot. I must say I've played two hours now and have never felt this overwhelmed. I literally have zero idea what's going on, except I keep dying and losing everything. I'll obviously give it more try but I'm starting to feel I may not be patient enough for this. I don't know where to go, what to do, don't even know how to equip a weapon.
Just remember that animation cancelling isn't really a thing in this game. You may not realise it but in a lot of games you can cancel inputs with new commands, but in games like the Soulsborne or Monster Hunter series you need to commit to actions and spamming is punished.
Beyond that explore the world and follow where the lights are pointing you for the story.
Build a character you will find fun and engaging, then get good with it.
The erdtree great shield? That thing is nuts. Little sad they nerfed barricade shield, since str/faith was probably going to be my next build with that. There are hard counters in PvP - funny watching moonveil spammers and flame/bleed reflection exploiters get countered by that shield that reflects
It's 100% still worth it. The nerf really isnt that bad, they just nerfed its damage a bit but it still tanks like a champ. Just don't expect to be able to afk a boss anymore.Mimic Tear nerfed. Great. I was on my way to get that. I was already in the place where you can get it, which I was going to do when I jumped on later. Oh well, I'm sure it will still be worth it.

Horizon is completely different. I think it’s better than this personally but can understand why others wouldn’t agree. People say this game isn’t simple but at its core all there actually is to do is fight. From misses a trick by not incorporating interesting missions and story. You’ll get there. It took me a while but I’m loving it now. Couldn’t even imagine playing Horizon now with what I heard about it. Such basic open world stuff that has been done a million times before.
Thanks. I've been knocking those down previously but didn't know what they were for.Yep, from Rykard. There is a way to spend a boss souls twice though..
Those big churches with feet? You can bring them down by hitting some crystals on their legs. Once they are down you can go inside and copy any rememberance
They have to be careful not to alienate the existing fanbase, that's the problem. Most of the fans of the series don't want transparent storylines because there are 100 other games that can do that. The obtuse nature is a selling point. Once they go down the road of cut scenes and in depth storylines and being told to go to X place to complete a side quest you are starting to lose the feel of the games IMO.Horizon is completely different. Yeh I do understand that but no games would bring together story and combat into such a cohesive package. At the moment all they really have is a tech demo for good combat, interesting enemies and strong RPG elements. Now clearly that can still be a fun game in its own right, but I can’t help feeling they just lack something which makes me personally struggle to keep playing. Will see. I haven’t completed both and currently I’m enjoying Elden ring but haven’t been able to play this recently much. They have to be careful not to alienate the existing fanbase, that's the problem. I think they'd rather see attention given to technical matters like the awful netcode that's actually got worse over time.

I think what they could look at is some of the NPCs and how we interact with them. Maybe flesh them out, and make them a little more easy to deal with without having to consult a guide. I think the open world format has really emphasised that weakness of the game in that it is so easy to miss them. It always has been but in Elden Ring the story arcs become very broken up, if they even get found.I think you're both right. I like the show don't tell approach to storytelling that the souls game employ, and piecing together the story while playing through environment and items is something I'm really onboard with. Having said that, due to the nature of the open world I think they could have done more with this aspect. The world is beautifully realised and I would have liked them to commit a little more to the narrative, even if they retained the opaque nature.
I just spent an hour in Gatefront Ruins basically going from grace to kill the same enemies, collect runes, die in a place close to grace so I can pick them up immediately so I levelled up to 15. It seems a little more manageable now. I have zero idea where to go but I guess I will just keep running around like a nutter.
Still no idea how to craft.

He is way over simplifying the game but seriously how fecking difficult would it be for them to put in some sort of notebook or quest guide? Even a really basic one. I shouldn’t have to play it with a document open on my other screen to type in every interaction I’ve had and where they tell me to go ffsI mean, you can have the opinion that the game isn't for you or that you like another game better, but this is an extremely reductive way of describing what is one of the best open-world games that has been released in recent memory
I got it late last night. Woke up this morning with an hour to play before work. Patch installed when I switched on. Mimic tear was a bit crap when I tried it even at +5. Now I know whyMimic Tear nerfed. Great. I was on my way to get that. I was already in the place where you can get it, which I was going to do when I jumped on later. Each to their own. It’s a great game but when you go open world you need to do a bit of balancing that they didn’t need to with the more linear aspect of the other games. The fact that you can go 20 hours between quest lines in the game means it’s so easy to just completely forget about a character or what not or what you were doing. Also characters just randomly move anyway so the markers don’t exactly help much. You can now put a little named marker on the map when you meet an NPC. What more do you want!
In all seriousness, there's always little quality of life improvements they can do, I would agree. Like all From games, this ain't perfect and I would never say it is. It's the reductive comment I had a problem with.
And yeah, I also have a note document open on my computer keeping track of all the quests I got going on! I must admit, it's almost part of the fun.

horizon is a shitty example cause it drip feeds you everything and blocks loads off until you unlock gear which an open world shouldn’t do, and also, the story is a bit dull.
something like The Witcher 3 though, imagine that with the combat of a Souls game, sweet baby Jesus
