Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

On the final boss of the second dungeon Academy of Raya Lucaria

Apart from Godrick nothing has been unbearably painful so far.

Currently I’m just killing enemies and ‘banking’ my runes as soon as I can level up. Just managed to kill some bosses in the Coastal Cave and instead of going further in I just transported back out so I could level up. Not sure if that’s the best strategy but I’m going to try and go further in now.

it's funny, I found Margit way tougher than Godrick.

What class are you, i steamrolled Margit in a couple of tries Godrick i got destroyed the lack of any form of defence apart from the few frames of invincibility from rolling against his second stage was a infuriating.

I think with a decent fire resistance shield it would be considerably easier, that's for sure

Can you leave as many messages as you want? I never left any before but starting to put a few down now but still not fully sure how it works.

Yeah I’m down at the beach now. That fecking giant somehow found me there too but I bolted.

You can go even further south, to a peninsula that will lead to a mini castle. You'll probably find a few mini dungeons on the way as well.

I decided to go for an explore yesterday saw a castle with a glowing ball on top, bar started filling up on my screen (madness apparently) and i insta died with no enemies in the vicinity.

Typical From Software.

Vagabond. He was a bloody nightmare for me. But that was pretty early on in the game. My shield, roll, and parry mechanics improved a lot as I went through Stormveil.

Margit is a cnut. feck him.

Yeah he was definitely the biggest challenge so far. He has a very big moveset to choose from. Proper cnut for sure but probably the most enjoyable fight.

Beastman of Farum Azula is kicking my arse. I probably did best on my first attempt but gradually getting worse.

I’ve always been shit at parrying in video games to the point where I’ve actively avoided it, but dodging doesn’t seem to work as it has multiple consecutive attacks. Parrying like I’ve got brain damage at the moment though.

Sounds like you're too close to him and probably not being patient enough. Bosses with big combos tend to need distance kept from them and then move in and strike when you know it's the last hit of the combo.

I've really struggled with the parry myself, has to be so precise which is tough in a game where every fecking enemy has a different attack time, I usually block/roll, depending.

Don't get too attached to runes. There'll be times where you lose a shit ton, but its honestly not the end of the world. The main bosses drop a staggering amount, and there's plenty of rune farming guides already out there if you need a few on a pinch. Also check your inventory for Golden runes, they give you runes on using them.

Maybe I need a bow and arrow.

You can roll out of anything you are invincible for a certain part of the animation, the hardest part is not panicking and waiting for the animation to actually try and strike you.

You will find throughout the game a lot of the enemies have quick wind up animations but then delayed until they attack which if you panic or just dodge upon seeing the wind up you will get hit everytime.

Its possible the most important part of the combat getting timing down.

I have completely lost track of all the bosses I thought I would come back to later.

If you're new to the souls games, I'd recommend you pick up a 100% block shield (the brass shield that drops off the soldiers in the camp before the main castle gate is one of the best in the early game). And just use guard counters (block attack by holding L1, and then immediately counter with R2, you'll know when you do it since you get a satisfying pinging sound/animation), it does decent damage and more often than not can stagger enemies.

Parrying against anyone other than bosses is a ballache, too many delayed swings to memorise them all. Guard attacks are amazingly useful though, definitely my new favourite

The golden halberd that drops off the tree sentinel seems ridiculously broken. It has crazy range, a brutal sweeping attack and generally hits like an absolute truck. I've been power stancing great swords mostly, but switching to the halberd + shield has made the game considerably easier.

Never even heard of Guard Counters? So they are different to parry counters?

Yep, and a lot easier to pull off too.

All you do is block an attack with a shield normally, and immediately follow up with an R2 attack. Seem to be as effective as parries but with far less risk.

Succinct explanation here:

Yep agree with that. So many different moves to pull out of the bag and really aggressive on most attempts.

Was definitely fun and frustrating in equal measures.

Thanks I honestly didn’t know that was a thing so yep I’ll try and master them.

I have never been able to summon anyone. It just instantly says unable to summon player instantly.
Was reading about it last night as I was having trouble too, but apparently you are supposed to summon near a martyr effigy.

Thanks. Just took out everyone in the gatefront ruins but didn’t see a shield anywhere.

Also killed the stomachless giant thing and thought it was a real achievement until a saw a whole field of them

If I accidentally crouch one more time I’m going to scream.

One thing to keep in mind - they will absolutely feck your stamina bar and can be slow if whoever you're fighting doesn't get staggered by the initial block, so you can be punished fairly easily. On a lot of bosses trying a guard counter will get you one shot.

They are great for fighting mounted enemies though, I've found.

It does drop there but it didn't drop for me immediately. I was using that set of ruins for farming runes and I cleared it loads of times before the shield dropped.

You can get a sharpening knife in the basement of those ruins, which helps strengthen weapons, but I haven’t worked out how to use it yet.

Yeah, I can find the signs it just gives me the unable to connect error.

The whetstone knife allows you to add Ashes of War to weapons which changes their skills (e.g. the move you use when you have nothing in your left hand and you press L2) and in some cases their scaling (i.e. which attributes increase their damage).

Noted cheers, think ill do some training against the low level guards.
