Edward Woodward

I've just read a snippet of Phelan's podcast interview, apparently Eddie was responsible for bringing money into the club and this would explain his reluctance to spend any money.

Hope tight arse Eddie doesn't become a Wenger as we need to invest money on our midfield ASAP.

Don't worry. He's said that Man Utd have unlimited funds to spend on transfers. :wenger:

@Bassa_Mufc: Mike Phelan: Woodward has previously been on the commercial side & concentrating on bringing money into the club rather than spending it."

People say we didn't know what Phelan did, but if this isn't a made up quote it adds fuel to the fire that Edward really is a bit of an amateur when it comes to the football side of being an executive.

I'm not saying anything, just found that quote interesting.

In hindsight, this was always going to be a disaster. A man of the Glazer's with no experience chucked in at the deep end with no especial football knowledge to complement a new manager.

I do wonder if we shouldn't consider a (very limited) Director of Football role to take over from Woodward in terms of player acquisition, allowing Woodward to do what got him to this posistion in the first place and he's obviously very good at.

"I don't think it will stop there. I also think David [Moyes] will be looking at one or two others to try and get that player in that everybody is craving. Ed Woodward has previously been on the commercial side and concentrating on bringing money into the club rather than spending it.

"It is a totally different outlook. He will learn that. He may be frightened by a few prices every now and again but he will have to pick that up, because you are dealing with high quality football players."

Original source. Around the 26th minute.

Do note that it's only his personal opinion regarding the "he may be frightened" part. I've read some utter dross today where people twist words to fit their agendas (shock and horror).

Unnecessary comments from phelan. Feeds more fuel to the opinion that Woodward is having trouble with his new job.

I think that has been fairly obvious thus far
Still not necessary given it's our former assistant manager. Would be really stupid if fergie came out saying moyes is facing issues with his new job. No point giving people ammunition.

This.

Nobody can question Woodward's commercial acumen and eye for business deals. No doubt as a company United is running as well as it ever has but on the football side...

I understand David Gill feeling it was too much for him at this stage in his life to continue running both sides of the business but I wish he'd have stepped into a director of football style role and handled the transfers until Woodward was blooded.

I Agree with those that wish gill had stayed on a bit longer during this transitional phase.

It's not opinion anymore, it's fact at this stage.

He talked of bidding £60-70 million for a player if Moyes wanted. This was followed by lowball bids for Fabregas and more lowball bids for Fellaini and Baines. All failed. People can say that's how to do business, fair enough, I wouldn't know.

It's been over a month since he left Australia on "urgent transfer business" and now we're a little over a week away from the transfer window closing and with the season already started yet we've still added nothing to the squad.

Moyes said in fact he was told there was no budget. (NO doubt was advised on this by Woodknob)

Quite possibly the worst thing you can ever say at the start of transfer window. Excites fans and also adds on a few million to targets. And still bids shitty amount for a world class player like Fabregas and pisses Everton off for two players who really should be easily achievable if we didnt have such a wankstain at the helm (Woody that is, not Moyes).

Joe fecking Kinnear would have done a better job than this cnut.

Would pursuing a Director of Football in the future be a possibility?

I don't think we can afford to have another incompetent summer similar to this one so I'm all for it if it means the club actually has a strategy in place for the transfer window. Woodward has no idea what he is doing.

At least Joe hasn't even pretended he's trying to sign someone

After all that's happened with the strangely low Fabregas bids, wouldn't it be hilarious if he put in a 45m bid for Fellaini out of nowhere. It'd insane, but hilarious.

All he implied was we had the budget to sign any player we felt would improve us. Gill's been saying that for years every time someone questions the Glazers.

I mean, surely Woodward will have to answer to the Glazer's as to why he's been unable to add to the squad. And like said above, we can't really afford to fanny about with transfers in the future.

But then bidding £25 million for a player who did not want to leave at a club who did not want to sell after they had just sold a different midfielder a day before was massively retarded.

No arguments there.

I wouldn't have been bothered with the bid really if we went in for a punt and had options B, C, D and E ready to fall back on. But it looked like we were truly trying to sign him in which case we look like amateurs. No evidence of any other interest in players bar Baines/Fellaini and it would be annoying if we now overpaid for these two players on deadline day due to lack of planning and strategy in place for the window. Very unlike our club actually. Hopefully with the Bale deal we may be given some hope with Madrid players becoming available though.

It's not like Gill would happily break the bank for players either. We missed out on a lot under him too.
True. But I'm not sure we'd bid 30 million for cesc fabregas. I our old assistant manager thinks the new guy is facing problems then I believe him.

I think the club were probably more than willing to go much higher than £30m for Fabregas but Barcelona basically shut that out before we ever could. We've never been known to just throw whatever the opposing club wants at them without putting up a fight first ourselves. last year our supposed first bid for Kagawa was a measly £7m and we ended up paying double that a month later in the end.

The problem for me is that the club as a whole seems to be stuck in 2005 when it comes to transfer fees, unfortunately the market has massively inflated since then and the club do need to catch up.

Paying 8 million pounds for Bebe shows that we're hip to the inflation.
That deal was a sodding great bung to Mendes, probably to ensure that we got first dibs on his players in the future, such as De Gea and Garay (if we had wanted him). It can comfortably be ignored in terms of relevance to what we pay for our players.

Bidding £12m for Baines and then coming back with a second and bid for the same amount as before (or even less), albeit with a combined bid, is naive at best.

Don't think Gill would've done that.

Agree with all of that. We're too stingy for such a big club and some times don't seem to have the balls to overpay for quality. OMG 30 million!!!

On the other we also seem to have weird issues with regards to central midfielders. Young talents pass us by. Available stars pass us by. I'm not sure what the clubs policy with regards to central midfielders has been because it's been bewildering how we've just stood back and done feck all for years.

I think it's more SAF than the club when it comes to our midfield. He's a stubborn old fellow.
