Edinson Cavani

Some people in the match thread saying he was quiet and didn't do much.

He put in a terrific shift tracking back and his immense work rate allowed the half fit Suarez to do less running around and stay in the areas he's most dangerous.

Fans don't often see the game as a whole but managers love players that are willing to sacrifice themselves for the team like that. Watching Cavani tonight would have been like watching porn for Mourinho.

He's always very moist. Hasn't stood out in any games I've watched with him playing since the switch to PSG.

Was alright today in a funny system. Nice cross to Suarez and as I say, he sweats buckets.

#2 he played almost as b2b midfielder. great player.

£60m?? 5 years and i still can't really see it.... Yeah heard he was amazing at both Palermo & Napoli but i can't see it.

You can play him on wing and keep him happy as I'd imagine the selling point would be rotation/forward fluidity. Not "stand there bitch".
That's impossible, at PSG he starts on the right but has freedom to go almost anywhere in the pitch. If he isn't happy in that ideal situation, how could give him more while still playing him there from time to time.At PSG he really doesn't stay close to the touchline and he still isn't happy.

If he drifts around anyway then maybe his issues at PSG run deeper than just not wanting to play wide.

He just clearly wants to be the main striker.Problem for him is that they have a better player than him right now for that position and when Zlatan got injured this season, he didn't really use those opportunities to show himself.

It's an identical situation to Rooney's.

Well he could be main striker here. I think Rooney, as much as he may whinge, is wasted as someone who sits up top. Even the way he plays the game you can tell it doesn't suit him as he takes it upon himself to tackle on the edge of our penalty area and all the rest of it. We could simply replace a winger with Rooney but not play him as a winger but more someone who floats about. I don't think you necessarily need wide players who hug the touchline anymore, not since 1995 anyway. Look at how Robben operates at Bayern or even to some extent Suarez at Liverpool. It'd all depend on how you compose the midfield but I think:

DMC
-Rooney- MC - Mata
Cavani
RVP
Could work. Sure it'd be narrow but I'd be fine with that and its no real difference to how Bayern play with a holding DMC (Kroos) a MC (Muller), two attacking wide players who like to cut in (Ribery and Robben) and guy in the hole (Gotze) and matey bloke up front. Rooney can be defensively minded and if the MC in the above formation sits then I don't see how there'd be any issues with that especially when you consider the possibility of interchange between Rooney, Mata and Cavani. Even RVP can drop deep and give Cavani the place up top.

More like not being played out of position. Even if they play him in the middle combined with Zlatan, I think he would have been fine. But considering PSG plays a 4-3-3, there is only player who can play in the middle, and that is obviously Zlatan.

Still, he is a very good player, and can be devastating in a central role. He did not take his chances then, but give time in that position for a number of games, and then you would see what he can do.

I've not seen PSG play all that much at all but I'd be surprised if Ibrahimovic willingly rotates the central role very much at all.

I actually don't think he'd be bad out wide for us, cutting in. He has a terrific work rate and you can't deny his quality. We need some quality out wide.

Eh? He got through on goal from a tight angle with the goalkeeper covering his post well and narrowly missed after being decisive and getting his shot away in good time.

Is "not scoring" the Torres bit?

Narrowly missed? If Rooney had done that he would have been slaughtered on here

Exactly. The ball is curling away from goal. He's totally miscued the shot. Should put his laces through it and hit it through Hart.

In many ways it was a very Torres' like performance from Cavani, in the sense that Torres' best work nowadays is done in the build up. There are moments when Torres looks his old self outside the box, picking up the ball, crossing it in, but he freezes in the box. All of Cavani's best work was done outside the area. Was a great cipher for Suarez but as a centre forward the performance left a lot to be desired.

Cavani looks class and a proper work horse, if he's prepared to play as an outside forward we should snap him up. A huge upgrade on Welbeck

The move to PSG really hasn't worked out for him, when I watched him the CL last season he wasn't that impressive, I remember him being a much better player when he was at Napoli.

Hart got something on it, no? It looked to me like it was nestling in the corner.

What network did you watch the game on?

One of the best things about the coverage of this WC have been the super slo-mo replays. They showed at least two replays of that on Irish telly. He just miscued his shot. Hart was nowhere near it. Cavani tried to wrap his foot round it and curl it in at the far post but ended up cutting across it instead.

It doesn't matter what channel you watch it on, we all get the same replays. And yeah you're right, he couldn't get enough curl on the ball.

On TV catchup on an iPad in the kitchen during a busy service with no sound on  at the time we were all commending Hart on a good stop. "Fair fecks to him he saved our ass there".

So we should snap up a £50-60m rated striker to play out wide just because he is a proper work horse? Why not actually sign a proper, more talented winger for half the price, like Alexis?

He has workrate but why spend 50/60/70 million on someone like that, he plays for PSG and have seen him play regularly - you also have to remember that he only wants to play in the middle, the standard of the opposition he plays against week in week out is poor, most of the top half of the French league would struggle in the PL, and the bottom half would struggle in the Championship.
Ibrahomovic was injured for the run-in to the French league so Cavani had his chance to shine, and PSG's form dipped alarmingly when Ibrahimovich was absent

 bet the steam fogging up the screen didn't help!

The cling film over the screen didn't help... Nor did the greasy finger marks on that... It was the KP's old iPad and the screen keeps locking itself of it's own accord which had the exact same habit as streams have of waiting for an exciting moment before going blank. So annoying!

Can you not read, I said Cavani is class, did you decide to ignore that bit, he hasn't got a £50m price tag because he's shit you know, or have you based your opinion on a couple of games in the world cup?

In Napoli he was excellent for three seasons and except the differences on the few top teams, the other Serie A teams are as good as EPL counterparts.

You seem like an expert on French football, how many goals in how many games did he bag in his first season for PSG?
