Edinson Cavani

Absolute beast of a forward but it makes completely no sense. LVG will no doubt play RVP up top, if he plays a 433 you'd expect him to ask Rooney to play on one side and if we signed Cavani he'd have to be on the other. All that changes for him is the team he's playing at. Utterly pointless and I'd much rather chuck 60m at Juve for Vidal. That would be a transfer we could benefit from.

Instead of generalized nonsense, cant you see Cavani play and then take it from there? You mention physicality and tempo. Do you really see Cavani struggling in that regard?
Wow, where did that come from? Straw man fallacy. The burden of proof is reasonably on the person making a claim.

This is what just happened, in case it's a bit difficult to grasp the basics of discussing things:

You say Cavani, a very physical and pacey player, might struggle because the Serie A and Ligue 1 are soft.

I say that's a silly generalization, especially in the light of last night's performances.

You say I say Serie A is better than the EPL.
I didn't say in my post that Cavani is a physical player. I was pointing out that just because he succeeded in Italy and now France does not mean he will succeed in the EPL which is known for its characteristics of being a physical league with high tempo. I was pointing out that I don't believe he would have the same degree of success playing in the EPL which in my view is the best league in the world.

I didnt say you did. You mentioned the physicality and tempo of the Premier league. Which of these aspects do you see Cavani struggling in?

Both aspects are a trademark of the EPL thus making it in my view more challenging than the two leagues he has played in Serie A and currently Ligue 1. The defenders in the EPL are able to play more aggressively on marking strikers than other leagues. He won't have as much room within the box to operate. That's what makes a player like RVP special for example, he can operate and finish in tight spaces when defenders are hanging onto him. These are challenges that make it difficult for a striker to score consistently in the Premier League. I have my concerns that Cavani can do this in a tougher league. My original post pointed out that just because he's had success in those two leagues statistically doesn't guarantee a correlation of success in England.

Would love to see him here but I don't think we ever will.

He'd be unbelievable in a Mourinho team, works so hard and tackles and wins headers like a defensive player.

am I missing something, why is some random called Joe being believed?

Apparently on andy mitten play up page (some blogging app I believe). I've had a look and can't see it, though that was the 1st time I have used it so might have missed it.

I've been noticing more and more tweets by nobodies being referenced in transfer threads. Quite annoying.

These types of tweets should be banned unless they have an actual link to the original quote.

It's subscription based so it ain't the full thing, but it's legit.

Richard Keys (who I know is a bit of an idiot) has been saying for months that an offer is on the table for Cavani, since way before Moyes was sacked. I personally think Moyes/Woodward were trying to line him up as they expected van Persie to be off.

He also stated that the Club would have to then try and persuade Cavani to join, as at the time we were struggling to qualify for Europe. Following that, I think there was a story at the end of the season where Cavani said he was staying at PSG. Unless things have progressed since then and given we didn't qualify for Europe, albeit for one season I expect, I don't see this deal happening.

If it does, I'd be surprised and I'm not sure where it'll leave Rooney. Nonetheless, whether Rooney or Cavani are at the Club, I see van Persie as van Gaal's first choice centre forward. Rightly so in my opinion.

Keys basically works for PSG owners, so he might be on to something here, but i can't imagine having both cavani and rooney here, it makes zero sense, if cavani arrives then it's the end of the road for rooney imo.

If we go ahead with this and Woodward makes the deal without van Gaal's permission, van Gaal may just isolate him and not want to play him. Riquelme. "You are not my player."

If we're signing this guy, he'll on the wing - which is why he's unhappy at PSG. He'd get reassurances that he won't play there if he was to join us.

This is a load of bollocks.

Right?

You can play him on wing and keep him happy as I'd imagine the selling point would be rotation/forward fluidity. Not "stand there bitch".

The way VP and Van Gaal get on, you just cannot see us buying a top striker. You just can't see it.

It'll be tricky enough to fit Mata and Rooney in as it is.

Not sure I'm going to get too worked up based on the word of a journo who sells subscriptions for a living. Would believe Moyes was well advanced in a move for him but its a dead deal now that our new manager is RVP's best pal.

Mitten is just being creative with an old story to sell subs IMO.

Andy Mitten:

Edison Cavani is Uruguay’s other key man. The Paris St Germain forward has an offer to join United. Cavani, 27, likes the prospect, but wouldn’t want a repeat of his situation in Paris where he plays second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Cavani, the sixth most expensive player in the world since his €64 million transfer from Napoli to Paris a year ago, feels he’s good enough to be the leading striker at a club and is wary of joining United given Robin van Persie’s status.

The only scenario that would make any sort of sense regarding Cavani to United is playing him in a front 2 with RvP and having Rooney and Mata drop in behind them in a midfield 5. Would this make sense/work?

We'd have the worlds slowest attack.

Rooney/Mata + RvP + Cavani could fit together in a 4-4-2 diamond or the 3-5-2 Van Gaal is currently using with the Netherlands, but as others have said, it would be the slowest-paced attack imaginable.

Yeah that's what I was kind of thinking. He just doesn't fit anywhere with the players we already have. Would be such a silly transfer. Should be focusing our resources on the likes of Sanchez and Vidal.

If Woodward wants to spend 90M in one swoop look no further than Chile's Vidal and Sanchez and the winger/CM issues in the club would be well on their way to being sorted.

I don't understand the world anymore if we sign this guy. It doesn't make sense

We won't, you can be 100% sure of it now that LVG is our manager. Himself and RVP clearly have a bromance and LVG favours him and rightly so, then we've also Rooney, world class as a striker. Doubt we'd even take him for 5 million to be honest nevermind 50.
