Edinson Cavani

It's from Fergies book of management.

Playing badly? play another striker. Losing the league? buy another striker. Can't defend? hoof the ball to the strikers.

I miss those days. We're losing the midfield battle, need a goal from somewhere. Put all 4 strikers on the pitch.

That game where we turned Spurs over after being 2-0 down with Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Berbatov on the pitch, was glorious. More of that. More strikers.

Obviously this seems a remote possibility and I really can't see it happening even if Rooney does go. In truth I'd rather we got Rooney to sign a new 4 year deal, get Vidic to sign an extension and then focus on getting 2 CM's, a LB and a wide forward in the summer.

I'm becoming less and less convinced that we need to get Vidic to sign a new deal. He is a defender from the old school, and I'm not sure he has the attributes to deal with modern top forwards.

In fairness Vidic has looked a shadow of his former self. was screaming at the TV on the weekend hoping he would attempt to pass the ball. He's starting to look like hes finished in my eyes. I think him also coming out and saying the title is essentially over for us (which it is) was a bit silly. He's the captain he should be trying his damnedest to instill some belief and fight in the players.

What are the odds on this front 4 in August:

Adnan----Kagawa----Mata

----------Cavani---------

Just going to unzip.

I'm not a massive fan of Cavani, every time I have watched him play he just strolls around the pitch with no effort at all. Good finisher, looks to be fairly strong but he doesn't cut it for me. I wouldn't want us splashing 40 million or whatever the price will be for him.

I'm pretty sure when playing for Napoli he regularly covered the most amount of ground? He's a workhorse, so I don't exactly know which games you would be referring to where he didn't make much effort. He is definitely worth £40 million, and if Rooney did leave this summer, this wouldn't be a bad replacement at all.

All respect major, but I think most watchers would say that his work rate is something of a penchant for him... Cavani is a pleasure to watch.

If Cavani joined us, with our current squad, for me he'd be the 3rd best striker...

On current form though he would be ahead of van Persie, that is, hypothetically, if we got him in this January window. He has been playing all year long, and hasn't been out for a long period like van Persie has, and he's been scoring for fun alongside Ibrahimovic for PSG this season. As well as that, he can play on the wings, so would instantly be the number one choice left or right, and we know how much our managers love playing players out of position.

The likelihood of Rooney leaving this summer is high, and if he does we really do need to go in for a big name striker to fill the hole he would leave. If Cavani did want to leave, it would be great to go in for him.

Never really watched much of him at Napoli, for PSG and Uruguay whenever I have watched them he has failed to impress and like I say been sluggish. Might not be the case in his overall play over a season or whatnot, even so, the fee for him would be too much for my liking.

I wouldn't say no to Cavani.

Wonder if Suarez will give us a glowing recommendation to him. :D

For Uruguay as well he works his socks off, often tasked with playing up and down the right side instead of saving his energy for attacking as a striker.

I have no objection to signing Cavani but c'mon, there are really more important issues to address.

True, but Rooney is one of the issues to address, isn't he? The last thing you want is to start next season with a shiny new midfielder only to find you've lost your best player and can't score for toffee.

If Rooney is to leave this is one of the best scenarios we could be looking at: him going abroad and us replacing his contribution upfront properly.

If anything I've complained about him getting too stuck into defensive duties with Uruguay and that affecting his impact upfront.

The most recent game I saw him play was that friendly against Madrid in Doha, and on more than one occasion he was tracking back to defend. He's just like Rooney in the sense that he is as unconventional a striker as you get, and will be all around the park. If you think about it, he's like Rooney in that way: a very selfless footballer.

Even then, with or without Rooney, we can get by at the very least with out forwards. Danny, Hernandez and RVP is still quite good. Our midfield is shambolic at the best of times. It needs immediate fixing, along with the wings and then defense.

would prefer Ibra

He's 32 though? As good a player as he is, he's only going to decline.

Cavani is younger than Rooney and has scored a bucket load of goals in Italy for Napoli. Now he's doing it for PSG. Cavani would be the wiser buy imo as there would be resale value if we decided to sell on in 4/5 years time.

This. To be honest, I would take half of their squad in a heartbeat: Thiago Silva, Moura, Lavezzi, Matuidi, Verratti, Ibra, Cavani, even Menez. It's a brilliant squad, and is going to get better each season now.

Well you might get your with with Matuidi considering he still hasn't signed his contract. But agreed, they've built a very good squad in a relatively short period of time.

I think he's going back but we have enough to be dealing with in the summer without needing to buy another CB. If we start next season with say Jones and Evans as the starting partnership and Vidic and Smalling as the back-up, I think we can hold off getting another CB for another season.

Yea, I think he could still do a job as a back-up. And you're talking to Mr 'Smalling-plus-one', by the way, any future partnership has to have Smalling in it for me!

Ha! Smalling has every bit the same chance as the other 2 I agree, I just think that regardless our next CB partnership will come from the 3 we already have at the club, not with one of them and some expensive CB signing. So if Vidic can stay one more season and we buy a squad CB the summer after it would be ideal IMO.

In all honesty, I don't even think we would need a squad CB. Michael Keane can do the job. I think with a PL loan this season, which I reckon he should have got, he would be ready by next season for the first-team.

I admittedly haven't seen Keane play since the CC games last season, but if he could step up that would be even better.

He seems like a good finisher, and clearly is as strong as an ox - but I've never been overly impressed with him. I guess it all depends on who leaves this Summer.

Rooney, RVP, Kagawa and Hernandez have all been linked away. I seriously doubt all of them would leave, but if we miss CL football - then I'd say the latter two would stay. In which case, we'd lose a feck load of goals that would usually come from RVP and Rooney - at the same time, we'd lose a feck load of assists that they create.

Apologies if this is old news but I read on a Norwegian site just now that he's fed up with being played out wide and def is leaving this summer. Good option if Rooney leaves.

Only if we use him to trade for Cavani and Veratti. That's the only way I wouldn't mind seeing Rooney go.

I'm with you. Rooney staying is by far the best outcome. But if he goes....

The funny thing is, he's been out wide for PSG almost the entire season, yet his natural position is a striker, and he's managed to still be the top scorer of the club if you only include outfield goals (in the league). Just imagine the damage he could do through the middle?

It could be the Van Persie replacement if he asks to leave, or if he will be sold.
