Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

Suarez is the better player but that's not really a slight on Cavani.
Same source had us meeting Pep when it's clear he was heading to City few years back (Denied by clubs, and agent later)

Why these people keep meeting in Paris hotel when it looks like it's not so private.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/soccer-...-shameful-in-transfer-dealings-atletico-chief

Atletico was hard on Cavani during January window with all the issue with their forward issue at the time. But that ended then and there not able to agree to the demand. After the Corona break, did well to wrapping up CL qualification, there is no solid link to Cavanni.

Am I the only one who is incensed by this?
I am livid!
I would be as well, if I cared like in prior seasons but I stopped doing that for my own sake. It's bemusing to engage with the overly-positive people in this thread though, I've had a good laugh so far.

So apparently if you're okay with this signing you're pro Glazer/Woodward and the reason why the club hasn't been successful. This forum is going downhill unfortunately. It's becoming more and more like twitter.
Everything is so political these days.

L'equipe is very good for French related stuff.

Absurd innit

It's like you can't possible be a real United fan if you're not 100% negative and raging about every single aspect and piece of news surrounding the club at the moment :wenger:

I'm not sure I would say disgrace.

If the plan is Sancho then I guess I'd be okay with us not going out and spunking 50 million on someone like Sarr as a panic buy on Monday and waiting until we can actually get him.

People will call me a Woodward/Glazer apologist I'm sure but I don't really care about either of them.
The problem is, if we fail to make the CL next season, then you can pretty much forget Sancho and any other top class signings in my opinion

The club aren't dumb enough to think that this is an 'appeasing' signing. The money guys may not know football, but they know marketing and signing a 33 year old free agent isn't a good look when its been such a grim summer and naturally toys are now out of the pram...

They are absolutely dumb enough. And tbh, they'd be right.
I can see many on this forum being very happy that we signed 33 year old, formerly good player.

In isolation, I quite like the transfer. 1+1 year deal without breaking the wage structure and gives much more than what Ighalo has.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54404308

Former Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is due to fly into England on Sunday to join Manchester United.
The Uruguay international, 33, has been in talks with United and although there is no deal yet, it is growing increasingly likely Cavani will join on what could be a two-year contract.
He left PSG under a cloud following a disagreement with Neymar and feels he has more to give to European football.
United have been given a positive impression about the player's desire to play for the club and providing face-to-face talks confirm that impression, a deal will be done.
It is understood the package on the table does not go beyond the current pay structure, so United feel any comparisons with Alexis Sanchez, who was given a £350,000-a-week contract which he failed to come close to justifying, would be wide of the mark.
They also feel Cavani's age is not an issue and his experience will help develop the younger players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.
It is understood talks over signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho have not progressed, although club sources refuse to say whether United's attempt to land the 20-year-old England international is over.
United are braced for some criticism but feel Cavani's record justifies their move for him.
He is PSG's record goalscorer with 200, has scored 35 goals in 62 Champions League games and 50 in 116 internationals for Uruguay.
He has scored a total of 341 goals in 556 club games. Included in that are a club record of 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG. He has also scored 50 goals in 116 internationals for Uruguay.

In addition, senior United officials have not forgotten the impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic had on the club when he joined them as a 34-year-old in 2016.
Cavani's availability was one reason why club sources said privately they were calm about their situation on Friday, when many supporters took to social media to express their disappointment at how the transfer window was unfolding.
If the deal does go through, one of Cavani's first games could be against PSG, who are United's opponents in their first Champions League group game at the Parc de Princes on 20 October
'United are braced for criticism.'

love the disclaimer, dont even try to hide it anymore

I guess in fairness by leaving this deal as late as we have at least he wouldn't have been sat collecting his 200k a week during the close season and not having Cavani is hardly the reason we lost to Palace so I guess there's a crumb of comfort there, right?
yes but he hasnt played football for how long? how long will it take for him to train, get fit and be available?

I thought we learned as a club and all that? Massive wages, huge agent fee for a player who won't stay beyond a season.

Out of all the free agents and loans available this summer and we get this guy. I'm speechless, the board are bunch of clowns.

Atletico didn't sign him because PSG refused to sell him without bringing someone.

Absolutely not. Apparently Manchester fecking United is now a Europa League club because that's the kind of club that signs Cavani like this.

Even Bale would have been better than this BS.

Atletico link was never serious. See how swiftly they moved for Luis Suarez?! Cavani has been available since June 30th. PSG didn't bother to ask him for few more months and use him in CL.
Different players. Simeone was looking into him as the replacement if Costa left.

I haven't seen him much recently but during the last WCQ and WC he was far more important for the NT than Suarez. I wouldn't have thought twice if given the choice of Suarez and not Cavani getting injured in the game against Portugal. It all but ended our World Cup, our midfield was shit and our entire transition revolved around him.

I'm not sure how it could be described as anything but a disgrace. The level of incompetence is insane. I have very little faith in Cavani being anything more than decent for us.

Right Cavani:

Positives:
- He's Cavani
- Experienced
- 1 year deal with option for another (not a long contract)
- Different type of striker, gives another option
- Allows us to plan for another proper striker by the time his contract ends
- Boost it gives the players seeing Cavani in the team, young players can learn a lot from him

Negatives
- Age
- Injury record
- Wages (not sure how much it will be yet but short contract so meh)
- Agent fees

I will take him

yes but he hasnt played football for how long? how long will it take for him to train, get fit and be available?

I'd imagine he is pretty professional and will get up to speed in short time.

I'd also think he would need to fight Greenwood/Martial/Rashford for a place in the team. Brilliant.

Thats what we need. Competition for places upfront. No more automatic selections.

L'equipe is very good for French related stuff.
You said so.

Anyone know me on this forum know I follow French football quite a bit too. L'equipe is not really that great. There is much better free lancer jounalist, and source for Paris, and PSG related news. Even them are not 100% hit

He's worth a punt for a year. If anything happens to Martial, we at least have someone who can come in and do a better than Igalho

I wouldn't be surprise if this is the only signing we could make before the window closed.

'United are braced for criticism.'

Woodward's probably thinking "those idiot fans still won't be happy with us signing a world class striker like Cavani, who played for last season's CL finalists. Good thing Ole promised me he will win the league if I got him a top level attacker so we can finally prove all these poor morons wrong! Big Ed ain't nothing to feck with!"

Vinicius moved on loan, why not do that deal instead?

I can't find positives in this deal at all. It's down right awful.

It's not incompetence. It's a lack of concern for footballing merit. He will sell shirts and keep the gullible fans happy (which appears to be a large number)

For a player on that kind of wage? Rooney was hounded out for that kind of return.

What? Cavani is going to be earning more than Harry Kane during his sting here if he's on £200k p/w (reckon it'll be more) plus the signing on fee. More than Vardy outright; one of the top earning strikers in the entire league. Do you think that's right or normal given the state of the guy coming here?

Signings like this are a fundamental problem with how we are being run and why we are the laughing stock we've become.

We shouldn't even have to look in his direction, and yet here we are.
1 year at £200k per week is equal to only £10m for the year

£10m is the equivalent to buying a mercenary from Ligue 1 for £40k per week wages and a £8m transfer fee.

If Cavani scores only 5 goals whilst giving Martial a breather every few games, that's more than decent value for the price that you'd pay if you'd brought in a player for a £40k weekly wage + £8m transfer fee instead.

This is an absolute awful deal, pure desperation, I’d be absolutely distraught if the glazers were doing to my club what they’re doing to you lot and I genuinely feel for you.
Having a soft spot for United I can only hope that they and also Ed Woodward leave as quick as possible.

Whats the fecking point signing Cavani anyway when we don't have a single player in the club who can put a decent cross in. We've got the two worst attacking fullbacks known to man, Rashford is more of a striker playing from the left as is Greenwood on the other side.

Even if all us naysayers are wrong about Cavani still being up to it...... Who the feck is going to provide the crosses for him?

It's got disaster written all over it. No way on earth was this the plan going into this window. No chance on earth. Club is an absolute shambles and this is some desperate attempt to appease the fans.

One could really start to believe our board consists of Liverpool fans. No way they are so stupid to not learn from the errors of the recent past.

I would be as well, if I cared like in prior seasons but I stopped doing that for my own sake. It's bemusing to engage with the overly-positive people in this thread though, I've had a good laugh so far.
Caftards will rationalize everything.

It is incompetence. You cannot paint this other than incompetence and desperation.

How else to respond to this joke of a signing? Ed must think the fans are morons to pull this again. Beginning to think he's right.

Some fans are definitely appeased by this ridiculous signing.

Another point to make is that we let Lukaku go,, in his prime because he wasn't good enough.
Now all of a sudden a 33 year old past-it player is good enough?
What the hell is going on, here?

Do the board realise that they are actually doing?

Love how fickle our fans are

“Livid” at the club signing someone.

Guarantee you’d have the same reaction if Bale signed.

Wages too high, loan fee too high, agents fees too high. Wah wah wah. I’m never happy.

Grow up for crying out loud.

Multiple posts state that he fits the wage structure & it’s a one year deal. ONE F*****G YEAR DEAL!

We’re paying Ighalo £150K a week and no one cares! Cavani is allegedly £150K-180K

How else to respond to this joke of a signing? Ed must think the fans are morons to pull this again. Beginning to think he's right.

This might be the angriest I've ever been at these incompetent fecking leeches.
