Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

People realise you can still be pissed at a shit window yet think a signing fills a hole and improves on his replacement?
Cavani is a smart fun signing for me, strengthens the squad.
If VDB and Cavani is our entire window it’s fecking horrific mind.
I think many people are probably thinking we need to do a bit more than “fills a hole” considering we finished 33 points off Liverpool. They also probably have some concern over his horrific injury record last year, the fact he’s almost 34 and his clear decline in productivity over recent years. Edison Cavani being good at 31 doesn’t mean he’s good at 33. However, more than that, our entire “cultural reboot” has been on the proviso that we only sign players who want to play for the club as opposed to players past their prime looking for one last pay-day. Young, hungry footballers was the strategy. Cavani fits the profile of signing we were supposed to be moving away from. The fact we’ve done it so late in the window when he was available prior to when we extended Ighalo’s 100k a week contract does also seem to lend itself to the idea that maybe this is a bit of a panic signing.

Now I think at least some of those are valid concerns so I don’t really know why there are a crew of people on here going around challenging anyone who think maybe this isn’t the best thing we could have done and pretending that anyone who doesn’t see the logic in the signing is a moaning numpty.

Oof, this is a bit of a smack in the face, isn’t it?

An expensive (in terms of wages) short term gamble that reeks of desperation, and goes against everything the club have been pitching for the past two years.

if the second year is an option then theres nothing wrong with it. Its as good as cover as we can get.
This season is going to be an incredible slog, we will go up against a lot of tired defences that we can throw a fresh Cavani up against. A lot of packed defences that his movement will be needed against. I honestly dont see a problem here, it also frees up the budget for next year as well

Genuinely don’t think you’ve made a decent post. You probably need to get out of whatever video game you’re playing and realise even in Ligue 1 with Paris, and in between injuries, that 30 goals
In 39 games isn’t poor. What do you expect? 50!?
The poster doesn’t have a clue about what is a good return obviously.

Improve on Ighalo, have a better back up striker.

thus... improving the squad.
I agree we need to improve on Ighalo, but he's been available all summer, if he's such a great opportunity, why exactly have we left it to 2 days before the end of the window to buy him?
Panic buying at it's finest.

I seriously hope i'm wrong and he's fantastic for us, but i just don't see it. We still need a RW and our defense looks leaky too.

I think many people are probably thinking we need to do a bit more than “fills a hole” considering we finished 33 points off Liverpool.

Yes, but that isn’t judging this transfer fairly.

As I said earlier, the signing improves on his replacement. That doesn’t mean the entire window isn’t dogshit considering how far behind we are.

Former Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is due to fly into England on Sunday to join Manchester United.
The Uruguay international, 33, has been in talks with United and although there is no deal yet, it is growing increasingly likely Cavani will join on what could be a two-year contract.
He left PSG under a cloud following a disagreement with Neymar and feels he has more to give to European football.
United have been given a positive impression about the player's desire to play for the club and providing face-to-face talks confirm that impression, a deal will be done.
It is understood the package on the table does not go beyond the current pay structure, so United feel any comparisons with Alexis Sanchez, who was given a £350,000-a-week contract which he failed to come close to justifying, would be wide of the mark.
They also feel Cavani's age is not an issue and his experience will help develop the younger players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.
It is understood talks over signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho have not progressed, although club sources refuse to say whether United's attempt to land the 20-year-old England international is over.
United are braced for some criticism but feel Cavani's record justifies their move for him.
He is PSG's record goalscorer with 200, has scored 35 goals in 62 Champions League games and 50 in 116 internationals for Uruguay.
He has scored a total of 341 goals in 556 club games. Included in that are a club record of 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG. He has also scored 50 goals in 116 internationals for Uruguay.

In addition, senior United officials have not forgotten the impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic had on the club when he joined them as a 34-year-old in 2016.
Cavani's availability was one reason why club sources said privately they were calm about their situation on Friday, when many supporters took to social media to express their disappointment at how the transfer window was unfolding.
If the deal does go through, one of Cavani's first games could be against PSG, who are United's opponents in their first Champions League group game at the Parc de Princes on 20 October

To me it would make more sense if we can cancel the rest of Ighalo's loan. As a one year stopgap there's worse deals you could make, but chucking all those wages at back up strikers seems a bit daft.

Again, I'll wait to see what else they do before the window closes. If this is it, I'll be pretty disappointed.

With injuries as well. How many were starts? How many minutes did he play? Do we add in his 12 assists?
So injuries would suddenly be no issue here?

The question is why couldn't he earn more game time when his competition is Choupo-Moting, Icardi. Even fecking Paolo Sabaria was push to side of the front line at time.

Football is no algebra. You look at trend, not doing addition. The fall off the cliff trend is staggering to see. PSG got all these not so hot players to replace Cavani for a reason, and he couldn't fight them off. PSG didn't give a shit about losing him in July, while begging Choupo Moting to stay. That's what happened.

Agree to disagree then. I would expect 40 at least in that league for a number 9.

Who has hit 40 goals in Ligue 1 in a season? zlatan’s best is 38, Cavani’s is 35. No one has hit 40 in the league since the 70s.

We need a striker. Ighalo goes back to China in January. Signing a half decent striker from anywhere in the world will cost over 50 million. Cavani on a free and 20 million in wages over 2 years, is a pretty good bit of business. Lets face it, he's going to be our plan B when Martial is having a stinker. He has the intelligence to create and score goals as a super sub option. He is also decent enough to keep us on top in the cup games when the others are having a night off. He'll be our Giroud, but better because he can be a playmaker and not just a goal scorer. His vision is Sherringham-esque. In recent years he's been teeing up Mbappe and Neymar with tap ins. Our pacey forwards will thrive off that.

Out of all the transfer rumours this window, this was the one that seemed most fake.

If he scores more than 5 then it's money well spent. Well done Ed ,,only we can do things in Transfer Market that defies logic!!!

Horseshit from the club. Guy has been available since July 1st. If he was a primary target then he would have been here weeks ago. Instead Ed has seen the fans frustration at not adding to the squad, and with two days of the window left we do this and spin this PR bullshit.

He's still class and will make most of you look like idiots in a few weeks. People have seen him miss a few sitters over the years and think he's shit. He's -way- better than Ighalo.

Gonna feel a bit surreal for me seing Edinson in our shirt. Wanted us to sign him so bad when he was at Napoli. He was my #1 striker of choice because not only was he a great goalscorer with the perfect all around play he was always someone who worked really hard for the team every game. Was pissed when we lost out.

Even though he is pretty much almost finished at this point it's at least an upgrade on Ighalo so I won't complain. Our window has been a disgrace though.

He doesn't know what he's talking about he's just plucked some random, arbitrary number out of his arse that makes no sense.
