Duncan Castles : Jose Mourinho on collision course with Ed Woodward over Manchester United transfers

The griezmann fiasco has sadly screwed our plans. He was going to be our marquee signing with others being cherry on top of it. But now the plan has to be changed and jose and Woodward are looking for other alternatives.

I think the original list included : griezmann, lindelof, perisic and one midfielder (which I don't think is/was matic). Maybe james could have been on the list but because of griezmann fiasco , jose is looking for a striker and morata is his first choice and I can't see us buying two players from real madrid without selling de gea to them , which is why he had to make a choice between morata and james.

Also, I don't mind Woodward being reluctant to overpay for players. I think other clubs are taking us for ransom and are asking extra for their players. We have to stop making this a trend.

I think Jose could walk if things don't start moving this week

He burnt bridges with Real and Chelsea. He was kicked out of the previous job (Chelsea ended up winning the league few months after he left) and he spent ridiculous amount of money only to win the European version of the league cup. Good luck for him finding a club whose as accomodating as United is.

It's not that I take either of sides (I find the early blame on Woodward and the witchhunt idiotic, there's still plenty of time but at the same time this article is probably something akin to what Conte has done recently, i.e. put pressure on whoever is responsible for bringing people in), but isn't this shit being a common theme for us recently? I mean, every window it's 'a nightmare', in January nobody wants to move, last season it was the Euro, next season it will be the WC, then we're not in the CL but EL instead, there's this, there's that. Still didn't stop us from bringing in players of Pogba, Zlatan, ADM or Miki's calibre.

I agree, but thos season no top teams have really sone any business, which suggests it may be a bit of weird / difficult window, and not just for us.

Finally some action, even if not incoming transfers. I was expecting it, only one player so far is not good enough if we are honest. I know other clubs havent done a lot of business either, but Mourinho is used to winning big things in his second season and he isnt happy with how things are going so far. We still need a lot of improvements and time is ticking away

It's a propaganda piece nothing more , I believe all are alleged signings are close to completion and could be done by this weekend.

Next week Castles would write another article hailing Mourinho's influence in bringing all are targets by pressurising Woodward or personally getting involved to get them over the line.

it really isnt though

But I am right when I say getting players even squad players off the likes of Madrid and Chelsea was never going be an easy process. So I would have expected JM to have easier to get targets on the same level as the 3 in question

Mourinho's confrontational "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen" style of management is probably one of the reasons he has been so successful - he calls players out and challenges them to respond his criticism - but is also most likely the main reason he doesn't stay anywhere for too long as he falls out with too many people.
It's a double-edged sword.

Luckhurst just shared this article from last summer saying pretty much the same thing, standard Mourinho tactic to get what he wants.
Good link.

He is wrong many times.

But some people have convinced themselves that he has a direct line to Jose.
He's more connected to Mendes. He'd always been called Mendes' mouthpiece until this/last summer where it was suddenly changed to Jose's mouthpiece.

JM has made it quite clear to the media that the list of players he wanted was given to Ed 2 months in advance to the end of season. The ball was clearly on Ed Woodward's court and now that he's done next to feck all in what is an important transfer market for us, this article pops up just to make Ed pick his socks up and get things done. Castles is Mourinho's mouthpiece after all.

If Jose is behind this then it's not a very smart move. All it does is crank up the pressure publicly and allow clubs to take further advantage of our desperation.

I refuse to believe he isn't aware of that.

If Jose requires to phone Ed up and give him a bollocking then I'm sure he will. I highly doubt Woodward has thought even though he's responsible for the biggest club in the world, he'll go to New Zealand and just not sign any players instead. I mean, who'll notice?

Because people have convinced themselves everything wrong in the world is Woodwards fault, so they latch on to anything they can use to bitch about him. If only we had a DOF instead other clubs would just fall over themselves to give us their players as fast as possible without negotiations (and the DOF would only want players the caf approve of obviously), and would sell them all for £50 and a pack of crisps.
Lol. I get what you mean. :D

I'm jsut trying to understand why some people are taking this article seriously.

You do know Castles is Jose's mouthpiece, right?
Sorry to intrude, but I just had to ask. We should know this because?

I've been off the caf for a long time. Kinda curious why some people are up in arms about it.

Relax people. This is just Jose's 'get a move on' note to Woodward. No one is losing their jobs

I think jose was under pressure last year to deliver champions league football and he delivered. Now he knows to finish in top 4 and challenge for league we need improvements. He has done his job, got us to cl, identified the targets and he obviously wants ED to do his. He wants everyone integrated and ready and not want to assemble his squad when the league starts and there is nothing wrong in that, in reality that is the way it should be.

The pressure has to be on ED, why is he even negotiating transfers if mourinho needs to identify easy players to get? We pay the highest salaries, we pay huge agent bonuses and transfer fees, any transfer should be easy enough for us. He will ask for targets who will improve us and if they have to improve us they wont be easy to get for cheap. He has already said he will not pursue impossible deals and he was responsible for last summer's good window as he convinced zlatan and Pogba. Would zlatan have come to us with LVG? or with no champions league football. Some people are so blinded by the mourinho hate and looking like top reds and not involving themselves in "muppetry" that they turn blind to the obvious facts.

He has every right to be frustrated, It will be his job on the line due to faliures of Ed. Fans will not expect ed to win us the title nor to get us in far in championsleague it will all be on mourinho, demanding signings for the team for doing that is also part of the job and every right of Mourinho.

Castles is clueless.

And the last line in that article is just ridiculous. Literally 'nothing' is being done regarding signings? How can anyone possible believe that?

Lol. :D

So I take it, you don't think Castles is reliable right?

I've been off the caf for a long time. Kinda curious why some people are up in arms about it.

Some on the Caf have convinced themselves Dunc knows all. They ignore the laughable things he's reported in the past and focus on the things he's gotten right, for some reason.

Bored of crap like this. I really can't wait until the transfer window is over.

As long as we get Morata this week, I wouldn't be too concerned.

The perisic transfer is weird, Mourinho went to see him at the end of March, not sure how we haven't negotiated his fee or moved on by now.

Good link.

Sensed that too.

I just think this journalists have little info based on what is happening at United, so the "United in Crisis" headlines are out in full force, feeding on the evident fear that fans have.

This has been a quiet market, not just for United but for most other teams. I am sure that a lot of work is being done behind the scenes.

This is the same mob of English journalists that had told us that we had agreed a fee with Chelsea and that Matic was to have his medical weeks ago. I refuse to take anything they say as gospel and will not turn against either Jose or Woodward. I need a reputable source before I do.

It's most likely bollocks.

It's only 3rd of July. Perisic is a money issue, Morata is similar. We shouldnt be held to ransom either by other clubs to be fair. Once fee is agreed it will be done quick. Too many rumours on our 4th target which is potentially a midfielder. I can see Perisic and Morata done shortly. Helps players and agents are back from Holidays now.

People need to calm down.

People are still going on with the myth of Duncan's being our mouthpiece ? The guy is getting a reliability he doesn't deserve.

This nonsense has been said on Conte some weeks ago and now they moved to Jose.

Some fans logic:-

Hey look how bad conte is, demanding Lukaku from Chelsea's chiefs! he should find easier targets, he should have signed Defoe and Jay rodriguez

These are the same fans who will be angry when city sign mendy or walker or sanchez. They must be gutted when we signed Berbatov or RVP, such difficult deals, will no one think of the CEO?

I see it differently. If Mou think that he'll find a club that will give him full autonomy, no questions asked then he should retire from football. No one will give him such autonomy ever. He's not in a position to really demand anything considering that we gave him a job after he was sacked by Chelsea and he went on spending so many millions just to win the league cup and its European equivalent.

In the past years we've seen United committing many many mistakes from relying on the old guard which forced the likes of Drinkwater and Pogba to leave right to appointing a rookie just because he's SAF mate and bringing in players who were signed simply because they were the manager's pet.

I believe that Ed is doing the right thing here. He's adding people who understand football (ex Ribalta) and who will give him an idea whether the manager is being reasonable or not. 80m for a benchwarmer, 40m for Chelsea's reject and another 50m for a 28 year old winger whose hardly world class is crazy.
There were no complaints about Jose's signings last summer, so why not trust him again? He's only going to be asking for players he thinks will improve us, and the whole reason we brought Jose in is because he's got a track record for being one of the best around. We don't need anyone to second guess him. Back the manager 100% or bring in a yes man like Giggs.
