Shakhtar negotiations have failed, AC Milan are apparently in talks.

You think he will go on to become the most expensive player in teh world, talk about a ringing endorsement

Looks like Shakhtar have come back in............ and signed him up for 5 years.

Confirmed. Shakhtar have got Costa.

Confirmed. Shakhtar have got Costa.

Here's the article
Grêmio have confirmed that their highly-coveted midfielder, Douglas Costa, has joined Shakhtar Donetsk for €6.5 million (£5.8 million). The contract was signed on Wednesday but the speed of the deal surprised everyone including the player who was preparing for pre-season with Grêmio. “I wasn’t expecting it. I found out from my agent [Cesar Bottega] when I was still on the bus heading to Bento Gonçalves [for training]. I expected something to happen, but I was focused on Grêmio. Now, I have to think of Shakhtar. I am very happy. The club has tried to buy me twice so I hope I’ll meet their expectations …”. This news may come as a blow to Manchester United who were thought to have been tracking the 19-year-old for over a year and had apparently came very close to signing Costa. At one point, United had apparently even tried to take the Brazil Under 20 player on a two-week loan but this was ruled out by Grêmio. Back in July, I wrote an article wondering whether United were being conned over Costa. But towards the end of 2009, the teenager began to show a little of what he could really do - albeit at a time when Grêmio were out of the running in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The sum paid by the Ukraine side is considerably lower than what Grêmio were asking for a few months ago and some United fans may feel aggrieved that their club has lost out and a player who has the potential to be something special.

5.8mil a long way from the 21mil Gremio was asking for and the 8 mil united bid for him.

Gremio get 15% on any future sales of Costa.

Probably won't be that much in all honesty. Say if he moves for 25M, then they will only get what...3.75M? add that to the 5.8M they paid for him and its just over what we had bid for him. (Supposedly)

Just another club looking to squeeze water out of a stone, no wonder Fergie says there isn't any value for money at the moment.

I hate it when clubs want to sell to the big guys for obscene amounts, then the interest cools and they end up selling on a cheap. Comes with a territory I guess...

With all the talk recently about how he's been utterly crap, I'm not bothered at all. We might need some magic, but this lad is another long term project that could easily end up at the 2020 list of the '10 talents that disappeared in the past decade'.

Probably.

The worry is that we've got at least two candidates for that list already at the club.

Raping the academy of European clubs for the likes of Pique, Rossi, Macheda, Petrucci and Pogba is all well and good but it's a long term strategy, with a significant risk of failure. At some point we may to put our hands in our pockets to get someone who is that bit closer to first-team football.

Targetting 16 year-olds - who have only ever played academy football - is a a lottery, there's a huge attrition rate for players so young. It's the 18-19 year olds who are already playing regular first-team football that are more likely to succeed. Trouble is, you can't sign them for free.

Debt issues aside, I wonder if the patchy United careers of Anderson and Nani has made the money-men even more reluctant to put their hands in their pockets for players in this category?

Or we're looking at the younger players we have and the problem areas we also have with the seniors, and figure out spending good money on more players who may make it or might be a disaster isn't really the right step forward. If we had City money, I'd say fine, spend a few on Costa, no problem. But whether we are skint or on a budget - which club isn't, except one or two? - then it would have been an iffy deal.

You'd hope not. It's the one area of the market we're still reasonably strong in. We aren't going for the superstars-not that I necessarily think we ought to-so we need to buy players that can reach that level. If we start getting gun-shy because not every player turns out to be a Ronaldo then it's hard to see where we can source the top players from, without massively overpaying for 'tier two' players like Berbatov.

The 19-year-old - dubbed the 'New Ronaldinho' - has left Gremio for UEFA Cup holders Shakhtar Donetsk in a £5.8million deal.
And despite signing a five-year contract, the playmaker has stunned his new employers by admitting he could be off to a bigger club within 12 months.
'I won't stay at Shakhtar for a lifetime, but for one or two years,' he said before leaving Porto Alegre en route to Donetsk. 'The plan is for this to be a stepping stone to reaching my goal, which is to play for a big club in Europe.'
Costa had been tracked by United for more than a year, but the Barclays Premier League champions went cold on a deal, in part because of doubts about his motivation and off-the-pitch behaviour.

Shakthar fans are gonna love this lad with comments like this

He'll be just another of their Brazillians. Half their team are. And most of their players are better than he is. But hopefully he'll improve a lot and then next time there are transfer stories, he might be worthy of them.

There's a risk that the player will fail, but very little risk that the strategy itself will be a failure. The fees are so small that one success in ten makes it pay off.

Watching him against FC Copenhagen at the moment, he's definitely got some potential.

Did you quote Pogue but change 'raping' to 'raiding'?

Or did Pogue edit his post, and change it from 'raiding', to 'raping'?

One to watch out for, that's for sure, a very impressive performance from him today.
Great close control, trickery, pace and vision.

Only fault was when he failed to score in the second half eventually leading to me losing £200. Bastard.

I would have took him at £6M. Like a more technical version of Lennon.

Because he came off the bench to set up a goal?

My friend said he'd be really happy with 10 million euros for him. They didnt even get that. I'm sure in a number of years he'll be a good, less frustrating player though and have his chance at a good european team. And maybe then he'll be worth the sort of fees Gremio were asking from us, which were way over the top for a raw 19 year old.

No, because his touch and vision were noticeably better. Along with Lennon's pace.

He doesnt have Lennon's pace.

Basically he did a step over so you came on your monitor.

It was good play though and the first time I've seen him use his right foot in an effective way as its usually a hopeless swinger. But £6 million for a sub for Shakatar isn't "value for money". He's on the long road.

Yes thats right

Hes just moved, so you maybe expect him to be a sub. I also watched the game at Craven Cottage, and he again, impressed coming off the bench.

He looked very quick. Lennon quick.

Costa is quick. Lennon isnt just quick.

And just like not every player with good touch and technique is as good as Zidane, not every fast player is as fast as Lennon.

But when you combine the pace, along with touch and a football brain... They may not be the best ever ie Lennon/Zidane, but they are still of a high level.

For £6M it is likely you have a bargain.

Feel a bit for the lad. Plays a couple of games for Gemio and hes being linked with every big club in Europe. Quite a lot to cope with for a kid thats only just make his professional debut.

Hopefully he does well at Shakhtar and fulfils his potential.

You're going to be dissappointed with his "football brain". He's talented and quick but he isnt very far along in his development. A long way to go.
