We have a lot of wingers as it is. Yes he is a potential talent but we have 4 of those and 2 can really go on to become world class; Nani and Ljajic. Not to mention Welbeck can play on the wing too.

Anyway Good luck to costa and if he goes onto fulfill his potential, we'll go back in for him (albeit it paying around 3 times more).

Would that be the same news as anybody and everybody signing for Benfica by any chance?

I can only see the end product but not the application. This Doug looks increasingly similar to Anderson with very little exotic flair. I think Gremio are trying to con us

Wanted a stupid fee for him, has already begun to show a poor attitude to training etc. (a la Ronaldinho or Adriano) and is possibly not really that good anyway

20m is too much for an unproven 18 year old Brazilian anyway. You wouldn't want to be paying much more than what we did for the likes of Fabio or Rafael unless they were in the same league as the likes of Pato, which clearly he is not.

Gremio were trying to pull of the con of the decade. He looks more Stephen Hunt than Ronaldinho

It's not like they encouraged us to even take an interest in him. It was our so called well established scouts who wanted us to make a bid for him and I don't blame Gremio for holding out for a big pay day, why shouldn't they? They're a small club. If he's not really that good, then blame our scout, don't call Gremio cons for wanting the best for their club.

Dishonest perhaps? A player's price should be a reflection on his/her current ability and potential ability and in Dougie Freeman I have seen neither

You both have good perspectives and both are correct but Eto'odinho we're talking business here. I don't think many clubs care for dishonesty if money was put right in front of them.
Back to Costa, he might of had one bad match really, still a long way to go so I wouldn't want to conclude what type of player he is at this moment.
Certainly not worth 18m yet and SAF once again showed that how good he is at transfers. I totally agree with him paying only 8m up front for this young prospect. Certainly no way close to 18 yet.

Almost 19 and not done half of what Anderson did at 17. so... If Anderson isnt quite ready to be our first choice week after week, Costa probably wouldnt be ready for quite a while yet.

Gremio getting desperate?

Manchester United to step up chase for Brazilian starlet
Published 23:00 12/12/09 By MirrorFootball

Manchester United are set to step up their interest in Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa after his price tag was halved to £10million.

Sir Alex Ferguson was strongly linked with a £20m move for the 19-year-old winger in the summer, but a deal was never finalised.

But Gremio, the youngster’s club, are reported to be in financial difficulties and have let it be known that they would be willing to accept just half of the original demand.

Costa was one of the stars as Brazil finished runners-up in October’s Under-20 World Cup. The left-winger has been compared to Lionel Messi but is stronger than the Argentine, and could be the long-term successor to Ryan Giggs.

Paraphrasing Ekeke. Well done.

Yep, that's why I said apparently. I don't watch brazilian football but he's said that his mate follows it and that's what his mate has said of him. I felt that could be why we dropped the interest in him.

Do you follow costa because you usually follow the progress of a fair few youngsters, if so, was what ekeke's mate has said wrong?

So we are fine wasting 10m on this fraud? Doubt the price is true with SAF's current 'value' talk would need to be half of the half.

Quite honestly I dont think we have any notion of signing him. This latest story is probably agent driven

Sorry, is Ekeke's mate a reliable source now?

Right, well Bob down in the canteen told me that his brother reckons we're making a bid for Pato, so it's definitely true!

Wonder if this is the real reason we pulled out of the ljalic deal.

No more to do with the emergence of Obertan and balancing the books

So Shakhtar Donetsk have made a bid for Costa. 7 million to share his registration with Gremio then they will both get some dough when he moves on. Gremio have apparently turned it down. Villareal and Lille have already had their bids (5 mil each) turned down. There are rumours though that an offer has been accepted for 10 mill from an unknown club. No confirmation as of yet.

Source? Link?

Apparently though Shakhtar are back with the same offer but allowing Gremio to have 20% on any future sale. Apparently Gremio are now interested.

If the reason you decided not to give a link is because the source is bollocks then it's probably better off not bringing it up at all.
