Douglas Costa

Yea I just saw that and was gonna post it.. WTF?

According to a report in Brazil’s Globoesporte.com, Grêmio have turned down an apparent proposal by Manchester United to take Douglas Costa on a short loan period. The Reds wanted to get a real look at the 18-year-old before deciding to make a heavy investment in the player.

Grêmio, though, have already rejected the idea out of hand. “We said to them [Manchester United] that this doesn’t exist. Douglas isn’t in a training programme anymore and won’t go through this type of situation”, Grêmio president, Duda Kroeff, is quoted as saying.

So it seems we are definitely interested in this guy but want to make sure if he worth the risk? As probably Gremio want the entire amount of his buy-out clause or something around that amount..

I think Gremio are stupid to not let him go on trial as if he is as good as the reports suggest. United will be convinced and may even pay up the amount they are requesting! However it could be the exact opposite and all be false hype to sell a player who may not be able to make the big time.. and hence Gremio being safe and not letting their player out for a trial!

20 day loan? Well we've got a point I don't see why not, we have to see if he is worth the investment.

Could be media bullocks of course.

You've a point on $. This rumour should have surfaced months ago - long before Ronnie's departure.

It may not suit Gremio to sell a player before he's played for them for at least a season. I'm sure they'll still get big money for him in a year or two.

If the money's right, Gremio will sell. They have one of the of the most hyped young players in the country and if they are going to lose him, then they need to ensure they get the best deal possible.

Could be spot on.... And that's very worrying :(

The best deal possible will come in a few seasons when the player has looked out of the ordinary consistantly in the brazilian league, where he'll find it a lot easier to stand out than in the premier league. There's absolutely no rush for Gremio to move him on especially given he hasnt even played 10 games for them yet.

That's not quite true. I have no idea what the state of Gremio's finances currently are, but they are one of the smaller clubs in Brazil. One of the reasons that there is so much third party activity in South America, and also, that so many of the best talents move abroad at an early age, is that the clubs are not particularly wealthy. And by that, I don't mean that they cannot afford to buy players for millions, I mean that they struggle to even pay the players wages, which are a fraction of what you get in Europe.

And I haven't even mentioned the corruption, which also contributes to the problem. After all, it's not as if most South American clubs have high running costs, and many of them make millions from the sale of players, but it's well known that not all of the money is always invested back in to the clubs.

So, I guess that it would depend on whether Gremio need to sell, or not, at this point.

By the way, 900 Brazilians are sold to clubs abroad each year, which kind of highlights the point about clubs needing money. That obviously sounds like a lot, and it is, but many of those are not the high profile transfers that we all hear about. It's still an amazing statistic, however.

NO UNITED TRIAL FOR DOUGLAS

Manchester United have failed with a bid to take Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa on trial.

The 18-year-old forward has a price tag of around Ł18million on his head and the player's agent has already admitted he doubts whether United will come up with a big enough bid to convince Gremio to sell.

United are repoted to be very keen on signing Douglas, and have been tracking him for more than 12 months.

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to see Douglas in action at United's training HQ for 20 days - but Gremio say he is too good for such a proposal.

Their president Duda Kroeff said: "We have said to them [Manchester United] that this will not happen.

"Douglas is not at the stage where he would go through such a situation."

Douglas has played less than 20 first-team games for Gremio, but he has shone for Brazil at youth level, which has seen him attract interest from almost every big club in Europe.

WTF1.gif

I'd like to see Costa in Manchester United shirt, because I heard he's going to be a world-class player and I'm sure he has huge chance to do it with Ferguson as his coach.

Did anyone watched Gremio with Cruzeiro? Cruzeiro won 3-1, but I can't find anything about Costa. I may watch this game if he played.

fecking hell Sir Alex. Not often do I question the man. But we'll look like Interfeckingnazionale if he keeps it up.

I can kinda understand Gremio denying him a trial. It's a very cautious move. They have a reported £18M buy out clause in his contract (apparently) and hypothetically speaking, if they were to allow him a 20 day trial and just say Utd thought he was quite suited to them, they might lose the value on him altogether. Other clubs might not want to go near him cos Utd didn't want him etc. They probably see their best chance is to just hold out and hope someone gambles and gives them the dosh.

This to me looks like United won't be signing him, so I think we can forget about Costa now.

Surely you mean AC Milan? They have all the Brazilians while Inter, well they're not called Argen-Inter for nothing.

I agree, wanting to take him on trial, and it being refused, is a big indicator (to me anyway) that we won't be doing a deal for him.

Wanting to take him on trial indicates, to me, that we are not sure of him and whether he is worth the money. If that is the case, and we are not getting a closer look at him, I can't see us spending 10million (or more) on him.

Still, seems like there is genuine interest and that we are at least trying to do stuff with regards to replacing Tevez and Ronaldo.

Was moreso referring to approach. Milan at least have a couple of Italian first teamers. Inter are composed almost completely of South Americans. I would hate to see United even come close to that point.

This whole episode reminds me of Freddy Adu... We took him on a month's trial too, just to see what we would get and decided against it.. However this doesn't necessarily mean that any sort of deal is off.. However sadly it looks like it is..
