Television Doctor Who

My girlfriends into this so I watch more than I probably should, but I can't help getting annoyed at how shit this can be.

Case in point the three part monk episode: First episode was genuinely good, they set up the premise well and it was engaging. The second episode was fine, until the last ten minutes where they completely forgot the own premise they set up (how was the companions consent 'pure' when she was just doing it to save the Doctor's life?) and the third episode was utterly trash.

That's a pattern you can boil down to basically any episode: 'Decent start, meh middle, rushed unsatisfying ending that doesn't really make sense'
It was pure because it was selfless I guess.

Agreed!! Though they broke the pattern in the last season as every episode was a 2-parter so we actually got a decent middle & a well explained ending which wasn't rushed. Worked very well & I really enjoyed last season. Gone back to default 'let's fix everything by some waffle reasoning in 1 episode' this season & it's for the worse imo.

I reckon the Master isn't actually there, more he's a figment of Missy's imagination trying to make sure she doesn't completely become a good person. Reckon he succeeds too.

Excellent episode!! Really well done & enjoyed John Simm's performance.

Twigged halfway through that the orderly was a disguise but that only increased the reveal I think. Fantastic start to the episode, Missy was genuinely amusing for once (calling Nardole or Bill exposition ) Lost its way half way through but the ending made up for it.

If Simm being in it hadn't been spoiled weeks ago, I'd have fallen hook line and sinker for the disguise.

Hope the second part is as good as the first.

This!! No idea why they wanted everyone to know beforehand that the Master is back. Spoilers from other people/sources I can understand, but from the show itself is stupid :wenger:

I still fell for it. Watched it at 4am and forgot it was so late in the season

Decent finale to an underwhelming season.

Capaldi was excellent again. He's really grown into the role & it's a shame he's leaving. Had some terrific episodes & moments as the doctor.

The episode ending was weak. Bill surviving the explosion was one thing but then the girlfriend randomly turning up & rescuing her was typical Moffat nonsense. Actually thought Bill was decent the last few episodes.

Also, have they just left Nardole & the kids to eventually die?!

Missy & Master were fantastic. Thought Missy's demise was well executed. I'm guessing since she didn't regenerate, Missy/Master are dead?

Xmas episode could be great or could be nonsensical.

reckon they'll have a woman as the next doctor. Might be reading too much into it but the master goes 'is the future going to be all girl' to which the doctor responded 'we can only hope'. Plus they kept drawing attention to how the Master regenerated into Missy after this episode. Again, I might be completely wrong but just seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the episode.

I actually enjoyed this season for me best since season 5. Shame Capaldi finally gets going and he is leaving. Episode was decent, I managed to avoid spoilers so ending was a total shock to me.

I think the idea there is that The Master regenerates into Missy due to her killing him. They can probably work something out about his TARDIS being broken (there was talk about some gizmo that would fix it, but I can't remember now if she had it or if he did at the end).

Moffat's basically sort-of-but-not-quite written out all the secondary characters, so Chibnall has the option to go back to the them if he wants to. I've a feeling that he'll go for a completely fresh start though, new Doctor, new companion(s).

I thought the whole Bill as a Cyberman bits were done really well and genuinely quite sad to watch.

Everything has been left so Chibnall can start fresh, even with the Master given Simm made his way back to his TARDIS to regenerate.

I think it would be a big mistake to make The Doctor female. The show simply doesn't need it.

John Simm is just fantastic. He would make a brilliant doctor.

Have a feeling that the season finale was everything the battle of Trenzalore was supposed to be, this was much better pacing than Matt Smiths final episode. Good episode but watched in in 2 sittings so lost some of the impact of certain scenes when not viewed continuously . Shame Capaldi is going, he really grew in to the role. I have to admit I enjoyed Nardole a lot more than I thought I would (in fact he was brilliant) and Bill turning to a Cyberman (woman?) was very well done and thankfully not solved with some magic messing around.

Glad Missy is gone as well, never really bought in to her character-which in fairness may have been a lot to do with the fact that she wasn't John Simms Master but I didn't really like how odd her character was. She did have some great episodes though and her
death scene was the high point of the episode/season for me. Beautifully written-she choses to go stand with the Doctor after all when dies alone in a forest without the Doctor knowing that his redemption plan worked.

Plus leaves it open for John Simm to come back at some point seeming as we didn't actually see him die/regenerate yet, but still closes the door on his character if the new writers decide not to use him.

Very good end , to what I thought was a very average season.
Like the Missy/Master.
Did not like Bill, but like the way then did her has a Cyberman.
Capaldi was really very good, did not like him at first but he grew on me.

There was one bit in an earlier episode which mentioned something about being female, etc, and the doctor specifically mentioned it...

“So Time Lords are a bit flexible on the whole man/woman thing, yeah?”

“We’re billions of years beyond your petty obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.”

Very obvious it was going to be a woman. They'd been setting it up all last season (especially the finale)

First female doctor! Not sure how I feel about this. Don't really know who Jodie Whittaker is either but hopefully she will do the role justice.

Ah i dont mind her, not sure what i remember her from but she's likeable enough.

Really intrigued to see what the tone will be.

I'm all for equality but I don't understand why there was such a push for a female doctor. I understand the doctor doesn't have a gender, but his identity is a man for me.

It completely changes the dynamic of everything now. True, it may give it a new interesting spin, but they've literally picked a woman - not because she is the best choice, but because they were forced to show equality.

Ahh she's been in Black Mirror, thought I recognised her from somewhere.

I was hoping it would be Richard Ayoade as Dean Learner as Thornton Reed as The Doctor.

The show has been bordering on unwatchable for years and the person playing the title role has been far from the biggest reason for that.

I mean the second favourite with the bookies was the guy who played Nick in My Family so I don't think it's a huge stretch to say they picked the better actor.

It all depends on the character. If Doctor Who is supposed to be the same guy throughout then it makes sense to have a man portray the character. The same goes for Idris Elba being considered for James Bond. Is Bond supposed to be the same person, i.e. James Bond, or is that just a code name and each actor is playing a different character within the story? If the latter then why not have a black or a female Bond? If the former then it surely makes sense to keep it a white male.

Can anyone tell me whether it's 12 different characters or 1 character and 12 actors?

I'm sure it's 1 character, otherwise the regeneration doesn't make sense.

Maybe the regeneration is a mitigating factor in this instance, what do I know?

I'd probably be against it in general for the reason I described.

Neither, really.

It's the same person, but they come back under different guises. They established in the universe a few years ago that they can come back as a different gender and recast one of the other regenerating characters as a woman already.
