He looked on a different planet to everyone else out there. Credit to Rooney for bringing us back with two excellent finishes and a cool head for the penalty but Berbatov was sensational. His skill and awareness in compact situations is unreal, the space he made for others in and around the box was needed much earlier.

He was magnificent. Really deserves to start against Chelsea IMO.

I've thought about this for an hour and am yet confused as to why he didn't start.

I don't understand why everyone's so confused! If we'd started with 4 in midfield we'd have had Carrick and Gibson in the centre, which isn't ideal in an attacking or defensive sense, especially in a back five containing two relative newbies and a sub keeper. To be fair it's not like Fergie's tactics weren't working, West Ham were incredibly lucky to have got two goals from the two or three attacks they had in the first half.

Much as I love Hernandez, I'm very happy that Berbatov looked so impressive once he came on, if only to stop people writing him off for another week. Two good games off the bench in a row now, the lad's doing what he can!

Thought like all the forwards he did well and served his purpose. Should definitely have done better to put Hernandez in for a likely goal, but also had a couple of classy moments of the magic we thought we'd get more often when we signed him.

They werent. The introduction of Hernandez allowed Rooney to drop deeper then we looked more balanced team. Not too mention we were much more positive.

Whos writing Berba off? Most should be annoyed that he isn't even starting and hes our top goalscorer

Hat-trick hero Rooney praised the impact of the subsitutes.

"Berbatov was fantastic for us holding up the ball and making things happen," he said.

"The substitutions were good substitutions and they won us the game."

Well aside from West Ham's penalties they never looked like scoring, while we'd broken through the West Ham defence numerous times and only lacked the finishing touch on some dangerous crosses. If West Ham hadn't had a couple of penalties (both of which we should have done better for), we'd surely have been the more likely to take the three points.

I agree with you on Berba, people said last season that if he was playing well enough the manager would find a way to play him, even in tough aways. This season he's top scorer, scored our winner in the last game and made a massive difference off the bench in this one, so we'll see what happens.

I usually don't feel the need to post praises following a good game for Berba. Prefer to defend him when everyone's on his back. But he really made my day.

One of the very few people who can play football walking

I can't wait to see Johnno's response.

Something along the lines of 'Fergie still isn't starting him so he can't be that good' I'd imagine.

Today was just another example of how amazing Berbatov has been this season and what a brilliant footballer he is. We became a 100 times better team when he came on, our attack was better and we pressed and pressed and got our rewards. He made so much difference, and his skill was sublime.

Well in Berba. He's proved so many people completely and utterly wrong.

Why was that embarrassing? He has proved a lot of people wrong.

I'd say he proved a lot of people right, but he's improved his game, as they've said he needed too

He still doesn't always look the greatest fit for the side, which is probably why Hernandez keeps him out often these days, or is brought on before him

I don't understand why we can't praise a sexy sub performance, without going overboard trying to rewrite history, with a need to prove everybody 'wrong'

Brad circa April 2010 - "He'll never be good for United"

Brad in April 2011 - "That was sex on a football pitch from Berba"

;)

That's a quote from where sorry?

I certainly didn't think he'd be top scorer in the league this season, no!

I don't think today 'proved so many people completely and utterly wrong' though

Why the need to take it to such extremes?

No one said today alone was proof of anything, he's proven himself to be an effective member of our side over the course of the season.

the good thing about berba today was that he played a more fluid role. normally he requires a more rigid 442 and stagnates the attack but it worked well today. he was sublime. (didnt seem to want to pass to Chica though)

Don't care who you are but, anyone that isn't chuffed to hell that we have Berbatov right now along with Rooney/Hernandez and says they are United supporter need to get their priorities right.

Today Berbatov as Rooney said showed the quality that he possesses that is different from the other 2 - his hold up play and how he can just control the middle when the ball is played to him.

We are at this point laughing when it comes to our attacking options. Now Anderson is fit, Scholes is done with his suspension and we have some defenders coming back - it's looking really good for us on the whole.

Berba today though was sexual ...

Today was kind of like an icing on the cake for a season where he's been excellent when so many people were writing him off.

I'm not saying he didn't deserve criticism in his first two seasons, he did, but so many people were making him out to be worse than he was, scapegoating him, not seeing past his price tag (which we all knew from Day 1 was inflated, no need to go on about it) and refusing to understand any defense of him at all. Even this season where he's done so well some people are still refusing to acknowledge it, coming up with all sorts of weird and wonderful reasons not to agree to what is staring them in the face that Berbatov has played very, very well (I'm not saying that's you btw, just other doubters). He really can't win with some people, but he can keep on doing his talking on the pitch.

He has

Does that mean people were completely and utterly wrong in their assessment of his displays the previous two seasons?

Not for me

Well in the last couple of seasons I've been arguing that he hasn't been at all as bad as some were making out, so I probably wouldn't agree with you there. You can't deny though, that a number of people had written him off and wanted him sold a long time ago. Or are you suggesting that the fact that a group of people could see that he brings something useful to the team, and the fact that he's been one of our most important players this season, are just mere coincidences?

He's top scorer in the league, you can't knock that

There is still fair criticism, he has had spells where he's looked well off it, and obviously he's lost his place in the side, just how football is sometimes if there's a more suitable option ahead of you

I'd say most of the criticism of his first two years was entirely fair but there you go

Very well said.

A lot of it was, but a lot of people went far too far with it, completely writing him off and wanting him sold. He had a lot of fantastic qualities which we really did see and he had some brilliant performances in his first two seasons. I'd say he wasn't as good as we wanted, but he definitely was nowhere near the flop that some people were saying. He certainly wasn't a disaster in those two seasons. He was ok.

A lot of people defending his skill have been proved right this season: Berbatov can play well in this team, and he can score a lot of goals. When he wasn't performing to his best, we still saw he had the potential, and the potential has been realised. There was always enough skill in him.

And the criticism this season has been too much as well. He hasn't been fantastically amazing in every single game, but no footballer apart from Messi and Ronaldo is. For the majority of the season he's been excellent, and I prefer to judge him on the majority of his performances compared to the minority.

Berbatov's footballing skill is the equivalent of seeing a traffic jam on the motorway and deciding to drive down the hard shoulder. He makes football look far too easy.

It's a joy watching him play at times.

"Berbatov has Cantona’s knack of being the man amid a stampede towards the door who stops to notice a side exit that nobody else has seen."

Love that quote.

A fair few this season yeah, but none today

Unless you have a few posts to quote where posters suggested he wont come off the bench and play well. Cant imagine you do

I meant all the doubters who continue to criticise him no matter what he does and all the people who were completely writing him off not too long ago.

Golden blunder said previously that he could control a cannonball

His first touch is that good that I'm sure he could probably give it a go

We really do have 3 excellent strikers. Owen has always got a big goal in him aswell. Massive contrast to last season when we were too dependant on Rooney, and could prove the difference during the run-in.
