I was playing football last night. I was standing in front of goal in yards of space and a team-mate shot into the side netting from a ridiculously wide angle. I duly had a go at him and he, in turn, held a hand up to apologise.

Should I maybe have said nothing, until I "earned the right" to express an opinion?

feck me. This is such a non-event. Absurd issue to get worked up about. Footballer shouts at another footballer. Won't someone think of the children?

I was just about to say, there should be a little 'Has played a team sport at some point in their life' check box beside each users name so we know they have some idea what the feck they're talking about.

We've both made the point many times on here, I'm not sure why it's thought that the professional footballing world is entirely different to ours. In fact, it would be even more frustrating on the pitch when it's both your job and life.

Even worse then the thought that players shouldn't be able to react to others, or show their frustration, is the assumption that other players actually care? I mean say Giggs, or Berbatov or whoever throws his arms up, yeah the other player might think he's having a strop, or that he himself did something wrong, but that's not going to create a disharmony, to the extent where players on the receiving end are upset, or feel unfairly treated. It's a game of football, these things are to be expected, not scrutinized to this level.

Short memories anyway, we've had players who fecking hated each other on the same pitch and form partnerships.

The only time I had a problem with one of our players shouting abuse on the pitch was Ronaldo, in his final season. Because he was shouting back at SAF.

You remember G Nev shouting back at SAF after that fiasco with Giggs' quick freekick against Lille? That was funny.

I don't actually. The Ronaldo one stuck out for me, as it pretty much confirmed in my mind that he was on his way.

Some of the posts in this thread have been cringeworthy and embarrassing.

You remember the free kick, right? And how all the Lille players spat their dummy's out and were walking off the pitch? From my recollection some of out players started wandering towards the sideline too, wondering wtf was going on, and SAF was yelling at them to get back on the pitch, but G Nev didn't seem to appreciate being shouted at.

I can't find a video now though, youtube sucks.

Based on what? I saw him having a pop at Rooney loads of times, and Rooney having a pop at him, and Nani having a pop at both...It happens!

I reckon it was probably to do with Berbatov not being in the form he is in now, and the same with Nani. It's why there is a lot less of this, because both players have generally been on a better level of consistency this season.

It's not bullying though, he doesn't just randomly lament Nani for putting in a perfect cross, or for providing goals.

Ah I remember that now! Couldn't for the life of me think of the event.

It doesn't suck half as bad as my memory. It amazes me how people can recall trivial incidents in specific matches from seasons ago. I can't even remember where I was last night.

I'm usually the same, the only reason I remember that is the sheer ridiculousness of the Lille players reactions and the comedy of Nev shouting back at SAF with his typical angry face on. I'm annoyed I can't find a video now.

I think I am starting to see the error of my ways actually. Berbatov has been fecking awesome since he arrived but I, because of my scant knowledge of football, have been too stupid to recognise his awesomeness and mistakenly confused it for shitness.

Because my views of Berbatov were built on such dodgy foundations, everything I have thought about Berbatov since then has been wrong, too.

I've seen the light guys! I'm coming round. When's the statue being built?

Yep and I remember that incident, think Nev was dropped for the next match.

Does anyone remember the United/Arsenal CL Semi a couple of years ago (yes, I know... stupid question!) when Rooney tried a ridiculously long cross-field pass to Ronaldo? I can't remember now if it was a couple of feet ahead of Ronnie (and so it went out) or whether Ronnie just failed to control it (and it went out) but Ronnie turned in the direction of Rooney (who was at the other end of the pitch) and started to let rip at him.

At this point, everyone in the Stretford End (and, I presume, around other parts of the ground, too) screamed things at Ronnie along the lines of "Shut the feck up, you! Who do you think you are, having a go at Rooney!?"

I'd say with a fair degree of certainty that some of the people on here who are currently saying that "having a go at a teammate is perfectly normal - no biggie" were amongst those telling Ronnie to stfu.

Rooney does it just as much as (if not more than) anyone.

It's part of the game ffs.

So?

Rooney does it, Ronaldo did it...All players will do it eventually, some more the others, it's football, it's an absolutely nothing point. I find it strange that it's something you would 'never forgive' a player over to be honest. I'm pretty sure the players don't give a flying feck, is it something us fans should get worked up over then?

What about Sheringham vs Cole? That's two players who hated each other, yet played together. Cole detested Sheringham for his entire time here, yet managed to partner him and score goals between them....

Cole and Sheringham despised each other yet I don't remember them ever having a slanging match on the pitch.

Which goes to show how stupid it is to read anything into one footballer shouting at another footballer for making a bad decision during a game of football.

The point is that certain players are better placed to have a pop at other players than others.

For example, if Obertan came on next week and had a go at Giggs for something, would we all be saying, "Good for you, son. You tell him!"?

I very much fecking doubt it.

The point with Berbatov is that a couple of seasons ago, both himself and Nani were not exactly fans favourites. I saw and heard many fans expressing the view that Nani wasn't good enough and never would be good enough for United. I saw and heard many fans say that Berbatov hadn't justified his fee - Berbaflop.

The difference, in my eyes, was that one of them was still a bit of a kid, finding his way, the other was a seasoned pro who really should have been offering a bit more support to the young Nani than blasting him everytime he did something wrong.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but everytime I saw Berba do it, I just thought that he was being a bit of a cnut. So shoot me.

So nobody else had a go at Nani during that time? Just big bad Berba?

Hmmm...

That's what I meant, although clearly didn't word it very well. Cole absolutely hated him, yet they never came to anything, which is why I don't read into anything about players getting frustrated or waving their hands around.

You're still missing the point.

Oh contraire. You're finding fault with Berbatov for doing what a lot of players do, whilst not having a problem with other players doing it, and all the time it being a total non issue. It's pathetic to be quite frank.

See, you would have a point if it was just Berbatov...Rooney and Giggs both were the same with Nani! Maybe not as much, but the actions were very much the same. It wasn't because Berbatov had some personal dislike with Nani and couldn't get over it, but that players were frustrated with his inability to act in the final third.

Also, when is Berbatov allowed to do this then? You are saying it's okay for Giggs, Scholes, even Rooney because they are senior figures who have been here for a long time. So if everyone played Berbatov shite balls through for the first year, he could never complain as he's not been here long enough? That doesn't make much sense, a player will complain regardless of how long they've served the club because the one thing they are being paid to do is perform, and when that doesn't happen, whether it's down to you or someone else, frustration will be expressed. Some deal with that like Scholes are prefer to molest opposition players legs, others react within the team.

The point is, evidenced by what we witness each match, and the countless celebrations between Berbatov and Nani...that this really is not a big deal. If he went mental at Nani for two whole seasons, it obviously has had feck all negative impact between them.
