Not nearly the best side in Europe? Barcelona's football is out of this world, but there's no European team that is, by some distance, better than ours.

I hope if Rooney doesn't return to his best and we have to play the 433 or 451 we drop Rooney and play possibly Giggs or Nani on the left in the CL.

I think with all the recent transfer activity people can finally realise how ridiculously overpriced most footballers are in the modern game, and shouldn't keep using it as a stick to beat Berbatov with.

Yes, Berbatov isn't worth £30million, but that's just the way things go. Spurs held us to ransom and got all the money they could get from us. Carroll isn't worth £35million, that's for damn sure, and injury-prone Torres isn't worth £50million. Newcastle and Liverpool ripped the clubs their players were departing to off.

What we can say, though, is that, worth the money or not, Berbatov is having a great season and is a major reason for us being top of the league (probably the main reason). He's still not worth £30million, but when you consider how much he could have gone for in today's stupid market, it wasn't actually that bad when we see how good he is now.

Given that we're not nearly the best side in Europe, I reckon it will take a fair amount of luck to win it even assuming we beat Marseille. Not saying we won't do it of course.

At full-strength, in form, we're not far at all off being the best side in Europe.

Problem is we're not often in our best form, or at full-strength, come to think of it.

Premier League player of the month for January. Along with Fergie as manager of the month.

That goal against Liverpool

Speaking as his fantasy football manager he should have scored it himself the twat.

Yeah I was kinda hoping for the same result, especially as he was my team's captain :(

Completely selfless today, had the chance to put some breathing space between himself and Tevez for top scorer and he still passed it to Rooney.

Good call - realizes importance of getting Rooney firing more than worrying about his goal haul.

And yes, I was pissed off when I woke up from a nap and saw that he wasn't playing. On my fantasy team as well. Freakin Fergie !!! (oh and I had Giggs/Rafael as well wtf man).

Think it says a lot that Tevez was moaning constantly about being left out of big games, and how some were defending him so vehemently about it, and yet Berbatov's been put in an even more frustrating position and he just gets on with it.

What does he have to do? I wouldn't blame him if he had a fecking strop.

I must say I agree. Berbatov will no doubt understand he won't play every game at a club like United but what he'll find difficult to swallow is that he's our top scorer and is still not being picked in the biggest games.

Disappointed that Berb. isn't starting.

Yeah and we still have the likes of Ekeke vehemently defending his first love, while overlooking how professional Berba's attitude has been.

For the first time I am really disappointed for Berba. I feel he should have been the first choice striker with either Rooney or Hernandez the second.

The only logical explanation would be that Rooney will play left, but why not start Giggs there then?

Saved for the Pool game... he seems to do the trick against them.

Though I can only recall his debut (an assist and little else) and his last outing against them ;P

The pace we played in the 1st half really would not have suited him. Fergie went for it and played Rooney and Hernandez. I dont know exactly what that says about Berbs and his current status in the squad. Its not a good thing for him that is for sure.

He most likely will play on Sunday but to say he was rested tonight is a cop out for him. After 3 years he is still not 1st or 2nd choice for the big games.

I cant decide if I agree with that or not considering the season he has had. But if I was him I would not be very happy

Berbatov third choice? He's the top scorer in the league.

Knee jerk reaction to not play him in the big games as well, not long ago he scored a hat trick against Liverpool and carried us to a win in a big game.

If we start at liverpool with Hernandez and rooney again He certainly isnt 1st choice is he?

He is still not used in the majority of our harder games after 3 years.

What does this say about his status in our squad?

It's a hard one.

I wanted Berbatov to start, and I reckon in that first half, with the way we were playing, we could have really used him up front. They couldn't handle us first half, especially Hernandez and Nani, I felt Wayne's hold up play was pretty poor though, which is where Berbatov would have excelled. I thought Wayne struggled to take people on when he received the ball, either looking to shift it straight away or pick a quick pass, with Berbatov he can keep the ball and pick the better pass. Saying that, some of Rooney's passing at times was excellent, so I can't deny him that. Also, it's irrelevant, I reckon Berbatov would have been great on the pitch in the first half, but we weren't exactly lacking up front either. Hernandez was keeping them ragged and Rooney scored a great goal.

The second half...he should have been brought on earlier, or not at the moment he came on. When he came on, he was a victim of the teams performance, rather then his own. He was isolated, our play going forwards was nothing like earlier, and you could see the whole team was tiring, which is understandable really considering our recent fixtures. I thought he should have been brought on earlier, we were losing the ball up front a lot and he, up with Scholes is our best player in keeping possession. Perhaps that could have stemmed some of their attack, we just couldn't seem to keep the ball for long passages of play. When he came on though, we were too stretched, defending too deep, at that point we probably would have been better with Hernandez who might have kept Chelsea back a bit with the fear of his runs behind, something neither Rooney or Berbatov can really provide to that effect.

Berbatov shouldn't be our third choice striker. He should be starting, or at the very least benched in favor of a system supporting a sole striker only.

Well considering he's made more appearances and scored more goals than any other of our strikers, I wouldn't say he was third choice.

It says Fergie rotates his strikers and uses them for what he finds best tactically. That's why Hernadez has come off the bench a lot of times. One of the few starts Hernandez gets in a big match and now all of a sudden Berbatov is third choice apparently.

He has been left out in other games as well, but Sunday will be interesting. My views are only based on teams picked by Fergie. Not necessarily what I think is right. In all the years I have followed Utd I don’t recall Fergie leaving out a player he would deem vital for our biggest games.

Its an odd one.

He's been left out of other games because Rooney is our first choice striker. It means Berbatov is our second choice, not third. Yet even in some away games he's played Rooney out wide and Berbatov up top, which is something he said he wouldn't do (play Rooney out of position). So that at least shows something.
