...and the ball to Rooney in the first half when the latter managed to test the keeper?

And the attack when Rooney failed to find him in the box?

Was there another United player today who did better than Berbatov creatively wise? Giggs, Nani and Rooney created nothing, not even a single half-chance today.

Oh come on that was hardly a dangerous shooting chance. It wasn't even a half chance. He created virtually bugger all in reality despite often being the player with the most space when he had the ball. The others were poor too, I won't dispute that, but Berbatov was the worst of the four. He won very little against Gallas and Dawson and whereas you might blame some of the service I'd argue he should have made more of what he did receive.

Still more than the other three taken together.

which service was that then?

To be honest I was a little dissappointed in Berbatov even though the rest of the United attack was bobbins. Thought he might have put more of a visible shift in against his old club on is old stomping ground.

I felt for Berbatov today, he was stuck up top and never got much of the ball because of some frankly ridiculous passing from our midfield; had he come deep to get the ball then we'd have had no-one up to target, so I don't think we can put too much blame on him. And anyway, a draw away at White Hart Lane is a good result, no? He put in a decent shift and blocked and headed away well from set pieces, too, so I don't have many complaints overall.

Don't think Berbatov did much wrong today.

As has been said, didn't get much service - another player may have gone and got himself involved a bit more, but I **** we're all well beyond expecting that of him...

I will only criticise a striker when opportunities are presented to them and they are consistently squandered.

How can Berba, Rooney or the like be criticised when the midfield is playing so badly and creating virtually zilch?

Because strikers are not just about goals. Yes the midfield was dreadful but Rooney's touch was poor and Berba didn't show enough against his old team.

Did anyone notice Berbatov charging back to cover Lennon when Defoe had won a free kick for spurs and Evra was out of postion. Spurs didnt take the freekick quickly so nothing came of it but was great to see him put in that effort in the defensive third..

He was screaming at Evra actually for not being alive to the possibility. Definitely showed some passion there.

Thought he did okay but, like others have said, we absolutely were poor with the final ball today that made Berba's impact on the game minimal. Did his job which was to be the man up top, can't really say another striker would have done differently implying that Berba doesn't show much effort. That was his role today to play higher up and if he came back for the ball more all it would have done was leave no one up front to play it too.

Not sure what the solution is but, Carrick and Fletcher especially need to find a way to start making better passes.

For what its worth, I am a Bebatov fan, I just think Rooney is better suited to the games such as yesterdays when we are struggling in midfield as Berbatov doesn't do enough to get himself involved

People mentioned that Rooney did well playing out of position on the right but failed to mention that Berba up front on his own is not his best position either - sure he can play there but he is better when he is more involved as there is more to his game than waiting for balls into the box.

Only 3 players have scored 3 hatricks in a single PL season

1. Shearer
2. RVN

and now...

3. Dimitar Berbatov

Good on ye Dimi lad.

How many have scored 4?

We have 3 and 1/2 months left to the end of the season.
Number of hat-tricks scored by a player in the Premier League:

Alan Shearer - 11
Robbie Fowler - 9
Thierry Henry - 8
Michael Owen - 8
Andrew Cole - 5
Ruud van Nistelrooy -5
Ian Wright - 5
Dimitar Berbatov - 5

Shearer notched 5 hat-tricks in the 1995/96 season for Blackburn.

Also, think right now he is starting to think about winning the top scorer thingie. Also, just seems when he gets an early goal he plays a lot harder throughout the whole game. Could just be a perception thing but, pleased for him to even more so silence a lot of his critics.

Scored in the 2nd minute against Blackburn and went on to score 5.

Scored in the 2nd minute today and went on to score 3.

All we need to do from now on is find a way to get him a goal in the 2nd minute.

Plus, he's also on 17 PL goals at the moment....3 more than Tevez with 3 and 1/2 months left.

Along with his clinical finishing in front of goal today, he worked like a horse & showed great determination both on & off the ball, fantastic performance altogether.

That Berba, Rooney partnership is working well for us, despite Rooney not exactly firing on all cylinders yet.

If you think just how talented Berbatov is, and what he can do with the ball, his career has been a waste. He really should have joined us straight after he left Leverkusen. He probably would be regarded as one of the very best of his generation if he did...

Wonderful player still, though. Its just that I feel he would have been more consistent if he joined us earlier, and its that consistency which he doesnt have at the moment, and I daresay he probably never will.

I'll be honest, I haven't a bloody clue what's got into him and sparked this sensational turn around. It's getting to the point where he's scoring more goals now than he actually had shots around this same point last season. I don't know how he's suddenly turned it on now when he clearly wasn't at this level his first two seasons here, but whatever it is, long may it continue!

Maybe not fecking off to Bulgaria for international weeks has helped?

Well he was never as bad as was made out, his all round game is still pretty much the same, his finishing and fitness are just a lot better this season.

His form this season hasn't surprised me.

I think hes enjoying being the key man of our attack (or one of the top with Nani), when he joined he was pretty much second fiddle to both Rooney and Ronaldo - his job was to play deeper and act as playmaker. In his second he did the same and was playing with injury.

Now hes being played further up the pitch and is reeping the benefits of it. In essense you could say hes finally playing in the position we brought him to play 3 years ago

I think he's just more clinical this season. Puts away his chances with ease. His allround play seems like before. That's what confidence does for a striker.

The Berba of last two seasons would've had only about half the goals.

I don't agree. Sure he gave us moments in those first two seasons, occasionally prolonged, always classy. But his ratio of gone missing performances has declined remarkably, and where in games he was having one maybe two strikes on goal and not hitting the back of the net, now he's Premier League top scorer in January, and has three hat tricks to his name this season. He's a far far better player this season overall

Hopefully he'll hold his form, and add to his paltry tally of 1 post March Premier League goals, which of course is when it really matters (That was the 5th and final goal in victory over Spurs two years ago). He's done his level best to make sure we're in a cracking position when we reach that point though

Pre-season work (visible) and the legit threat to his first team place from Hernandez. Last season Owen was never going to take his place. Now he has to perform or someone else will. And he's really done so this season

I'm really happy for him. He's silenced a lot of his critics and is really playing well this season. Loads of goals, loads of hatricks. Rooney is just not scoring and Berbatov is the main reason we're top of the league really. Berb is a vital member of the team at the moment.

I hope he starts getting some recognition now. I know he wasn't as good as we'd hoped in his first 2 seasons here but some people have to start admitting how good he's been this season, and how he's come good. A real turnaround, and I'm delighted.

Still a lot on here with tightly zipped mouths. He scored another hat trick today but you'd never know it from reading this forum.

Now if another striker had scored it....

I just love the way he plays football. People tend to criticise him for him, but bloody hell he just take the piss out of our opponents with his touch and control and it's fantastic to watch.

Brilliant today. When he's on his game he really is a joy to watch.

His control is sexual. I love watching him hold on to ball under pressure and somehow manage to get away with it.

But for me I'm pleased with the hunger he's showing to score goals these days. Earlier in his Man Utd career he seemed to assume a deeper, more creative role. He was also hesitant to shoot or trouble the keeper when in space. Well not anymore. His goal threat is potent and he's not afraid to show it. I hope he get's that golden boot.
