I went back home to Bulgaria in the summer, I thought about things,” said Berbatov. “We wanted to win the title last year, we did our best but it ended up disappointing. I feel great now, I had a good pre-season. Physically I’m ready. I want it to be our season. The most important thing is for the team to be successful. We want to win every trophy and we want to entertain. When you come to play with the best you have to work hard to be on their level. When you make that step you start to grow up on and off the pitch. You realise what a great place it is to learn. It’s like a school for the young players to learn how to become the best. All I want to do now is play well, enjoy myself and score and make goals. Football is like art and my aim is to create beautiful things on the pitch. Our aim is to win the title back.”

I think he may finally feel comfortable at the club.

Hope he's not changing his mind regarding international retirement. I think it's perfect for us to have him rested for a few weeks in between the seasons.

I can't think of any midfielder who plays such a specifically negative role that has ever performed well in a two man midfield. The likes of Keane and Vieira always had much more in their locker than someone like Mascherano or Makalele.

Did you watch Argentina Vs. Rep. Ireland the other week? Mascherano may have had Banega and Gago alongside him in a midfield 3, but he was the main one creating things with his passing. Hows that specifically negative?

He was brilliant today, his finishing is still a little inconsistent but his overall play has been outstanding. He is playing with confidence and finally looks like is enjoying his football.

His celebration today was pointless though, why the feck did he take his shirt off

I was at the game.

I completely disagree with your summary.

But there you go. This has feck all to do with Berbatov, who was very good today IMO.

He played very well and hopefully this is the true turning point for him. And yes he's been our best striker so far - which isnt a surprise given the circumstances. The important part is he's playing well and he's scoring goals. Not one or the other, but both.

Very very good today.

I think the big difference is now that he's trying really hard. There were some headers he was trying today which he would have not even attempted last year. And not only was he trying he also won loads of headers and played a very good role of bringing Rooney and Scholes into play.

One of his performances for us.

Top scorer now for us

Our goal scoring distribution this season has been good till now :

Berba: 3
Chicharito: 1
Rooney: 1
Fletcher: 1
Nani : 1
Valencia: 1
Scholes:1
OGs: 1
Goggs: 1

Yeah I didn't get the celebration but, nice goal and great overall display. Still had his moments of sitting on his ass when he got tackled but, long may it continue.

Edit: I don't buy the whole thing that the commentator harped on that he headed balls that he won't have last year - there were balls right at him, what was he going to do, duck out of them?

He is playing with more pep which is good but, the effort was there in a lot of games last year but, his impact wasn't as much so people then just went at him.

It's gonna really frustrate me that now he's playing better people are going to associate that with trying harder. At one point the commentator pointed out how his increase in effort was the main reason for him creating more chances, citing him controlling a ball with his chest, against Danny Gabbidon, and playing a typical Berbatov pass to Evra as proof of this. It's ridiculous.

He's more confident - he's playing better. If he hadn't missed so many sitters last season, which obviously aren't down to a lack of ability, then he'd have had an excellent season last season. He's bringing it all together now.

He's going to make some people feel very silly...

But it actually does appear he's trying even harder. Honestly some of the headers he won today he, at many times would have just left them last season, or not won. His work rate has definitely improved and yeah his confidence is high as well now.

I agree with you, man! Couldn't agree more!

Very exciting performance, that was. What's bizarre about Berbatov is that his strength on the ball is stupidly disproportionate to his height, build and muscularity.

He's basically one of the most technically gifted players on the planet. Some of the flicks and runs today were just brilliant. If he keeps this up, he could do anything he wants this season.

He's running more freely this season. He's definitely working harder in some areas, like getting in behind the defence. A movement that was almost non-existant for him in the past 2 seasons. And he's also winning more headers (sometimes under good pressure). So I think its fair to say his hard work is more effective, if not more in evidence in the first place.

Berbatov put in another great performance, but why the substitution?

Also is Macheda injured? At 3-0 up it's perfect for the likes of Macheda to get 20minutes risk free

Yep, he's trying different things but that doesn't equal trying harder. His effort has never been an issue for me, but things are coming together for him and I'm enjoying seeing him evolve.

Confidence is the key and it's good to see things click fom him.

I think it's more balance than strength, he reminds me of Zidane the way he manages to keep his balance, & keep posession, when it looks like he's going to get knocked off the ball.

The thing about his headers is, I've been watching him develope since he was an annoying teenager who couldn't score to save his life. And all this time, he've been pretty damn good with headers and positioning.
Last season he was constantly outplaced and on numerous ocasions he just couldn't jump high enough for the ball. The only reason I can think of for that, is that he was carrying on with an injury.

And yet he was more of a threat in the air last season than the one before. I do agree though, he was definitely more of a threat in the air at Spurs where he'd score one every once in a while. He's only scored 1 or 2 for us in 2 and a bit seasons... But on current form he should score a few more.

Smalling's go today probably. Rotation and all.

Go figure.

That's certainly what it is with Berbatov. It's just brilliant technique.

Zidane was slightly different in the sense that, whilst he had excellent balance, he always kept a lower centre of gravity, and also had magnificent upper leg strength.

He's made one tiny adjustment to his game, and it's made a big difference: this season, whenever he drops deep, picks up the ball, then lays it off to one of the midfielders, nine times out of ten he immediately makes a beeline for the box.

In the past, as we all know, he'd just lay the ball off to a midfielder and then mope about in the midfield, or maybe sort of amble towards the final third.

Maybe I just noticed it more because it used to irk the crap out of me, but it's been very noticeable. He's definitely making a conscious effort to get forward.

Exactly, hes just playing with confidence now.

Another mint performance by Berbatov. But then he has never really been as bad as this place would have you believe anyway. Best player on the pitch today I thought. I also don't think this 'he's playing better because he's putting in more effort' holds much argument. I've never had much problem with his effort on the pitch, looks to me like he is seemingly playing better because he is playing higher up the pitch. Most of his (very good) hold up play and exquisite one-touch/first-touch passing is being utilised in more dangerous areas- in and around the opposition box as opposed to about a third of the way down the pitch as it was much of the last two seasons. Whether this is Berbatov personally striving to stay further up, or whether management has made this part of their tactics, I don't know. It's working mind.
