They've no idea who is "facing the axe", any more than they have any idea who is top of the "wish list", whether or not David Villa remains a target (was he ever a target?), whether or not Fergie''s looking for "a star to lift United", which goalkeeper Fergie may "prefer" or even whether he is looking at one in the first place.

As for the meeting tomorrow......Fergie's at a charity do in London tonight.

It's the press fgs.

Remember how many times Ole was on his way out of OT according to the press? Surplus to requirements etc.

And where is he now...

Not saying that Berb. won't be on his way, but at the moment it's just media talk.

shit story by the mirror.

no club in the world would pay 20 million for the bulgarian.

we're stuck with him forever it seems, since he won't make an issue with lack of playing time and fall out with fergie either.

would love to get 20 mill for him but anyone spending that money on berbafail is an idiot

Michael Owen, 9 goals. Dimitar Berbatov 12 goals with a hell of a lot more playing time.

People can jiber jabber on as much as they want about how Berbatov is class 'and he is', but the fact is, he doesn't do what he's paid to do. A free transfer 'although a good player' has been just as effective with less time then a 30 million pounds striker, and then you look at Owens goals and see that 4 of them have been crucial goals for our season.

I don't expect him to be kept this summer. As good as he may be, he's not a United style player.

Can anyone argue with that?

Probably.

I tend to lean this way too.

If he does stay, I'll still hold out hope that next season he'll 'finally click' a la Nani.

I think the World Cup makes it a lot more likely that he'll stay, and for a reason that most people seem to be overlooking - should Rooney get injured either during the World Cup or in pre season, we would have NO regular strikers who are used to playing in our first team if Berbatov is sold.

Will SAF really entrust a new signing with the kind of responsibility it takes to lead our attack? Or would he rather partner a new signing with the experienced, if toothless, Berbatov? Definitely the latter, I would imagine.

If we do sell him, I think a Berba plus Cash swap is quite likely, maybe with Valencia for you know who...

Valencia are unlikely to want or be able to take on his wages.

The thing with Ole was that there was no financial upside to letting him go, the tabs just thought he would go because no one believed we could keep a striker that good as an impact sub, he'd have walked into most teams as the main CF.

Michael Owen has 1 assist does he not? Berba has 8.

Just saying that these things have to be considered aswell.

Definitely.

I was just sneaking in a pro-Michael Owen comment. Probably didn't belong in this thread.

If the reports are to be believed and that united are thinking of offloading Berba who would buy him and how much would we expect to get for him.

There are at least 2 clubs in each of the European leagues that could use him, and afford him.

I'd imagine the most we'd get is 15m, 20m if we're very lucky.

The Sun are carrying the story as well, I guess at the very least there is some meeting planned for tomorrow to discuss summer business plans.

Well if the Sun have it, it must be true!!

There is probably a meeting tomorrow to discuss putting in new toilets or something. All speculation. When have the Sun or the Mirror got much right?

And on the odd occasion that one of their predictions actually come true, the fact that they got it right actually becomes a back page headline. Ridiculous.

To be entirely honest, as much as I like Berba if we received a 20 million offer you'd think it'd be accepted.

There is no way anyone will pay 20 million for him. That's what we should have paid originally. And I'm guessing, without knowing for sure, that his stock has decreased substantially since we bought him.

Do you just like appear when your name is uttered?

At least we know if we ever need to summon you all we have to say is "Dans". Just like if we want to summon Scholesy all we have to say is "Modric".

No. You got lucky this time.

We bought him for over 30 million. 20 wouldn't be that bad and besides get him doing what he did at spurs, and he's worth it. I don't think why we asked any different

We only had to pay that much because we were dilly-dallying trying to get him for cheaper and then City came in with a bid so we had to match them. If City didn't come in, the fee would have been nowhere near 31m.

Who do you think is actually going to give us 20m for him?

I know it's The Sun, ...
MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to take a massive hit on Dimitar Berbatov and dump him at the end of the season.

The Bulgarian has struggled to make an impact since his £30.75million switch from Spurs in September 2008.

His performances in the defeat against Chelsea and Sunday's goalless draw at Blackburn have been the final straw for many fans.

And manager Alex Ferguson also looks to have lost faith in the club's record signing.

Fergie opted for a half-fit Wayne Rooney against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final second leg rather than risk Berbatov.

The striker did get the nod for the title crunch with Chelsea but it was his first start against any of United's big-four rivals this season.

Fergie argues his preference for playing one up front in European games has restricted Berbatov's action.

But the last two games have shown when he does start, he cannot be relied upon. Berbatov, 29, has also been rapped in Bulgaria over his displays for the national team.

With United's title bid all but over Ferguson is looking ahead to next season.

His No 1 target a year ago, Karim Benzema, will be back on the market this summer after a poor season at Real Madrid.

Ferguson could get his man for the £25m he originally offered before Real stepped in with a £35m bid.

How many years left on Berbatov's contract? He earns, what, £100k per week, so if he has two more seasons remaining, that's £10m cost to United?

I don't think he will ever be consistently effective for United, and if it's a case of finances, well the £30m is a sunk cost anyway. From an accounting point of view, Berbatov's value on United's balance sheet will have been depreciated so any accounting loss wouldn't be as great as imagined. Not compared to those interest payables, anyway.

Oh well, Fergie'll do what he thinks is best...

Whilst I'm a fan of Berba as a footballer - he just does'nt seem to have fitted in to the way Fergie wants to play - particularly in the "big" matches and now looks bereft of all confidence - Whilst I think the journos have probably jumped the gun - I'm sure serious thought is being given to the situation by Fergie and even Berba himself....unless Fergie finds a way of fitting Berba in more regularly then I think it will be time to cut and run....

True, he never once did suit our tactics, no way was he as inspirational Cantona'esque, his lack of dangerous prescense in the box has never been seen, he's missed too many good chances and has been too slow, mark my words he has been good at passing but that's what we use MF's for, I'd have all but praises if Berbs was playing in a MF area / defending more and actually trying to press the opposition, but that isn't going to happen and my verdict of 2 seasons is a of course... like most of the others rate him, if he was like 23-25 we'd give him another 2 season but at 29 your suppose to be at your peak.

The transfer window is 2.5 months away from opening. Doubt the meeting to decide player deals would happen this early

I doubt it wouldnt. Fergie is famous for always thinking ahead and he likes to head off for his summer hols with the board aware of who he wants to bring in. our season is a few games from over and I've no doubt the great man has already made his key decisions

Having grown frustrated with Berba last season I was delighted with the way he started this one. He looked like a player out to prove something. But he has been missing the last few weeks when we needed him most. I believe that is a reflection of his character. I dont believe he is a player to be relied on when the chips are down and the occasion demands it. A player with all the skill and ability in the world but after 2 seasons its fair to say we may have already seen the best of berb in a united shirt and that united and he are not a good fit

No need to sell Berbatov for we won't get much to drown our sorrows with. Keep him and focus on central midfield as well as cover for the wings, Hatem Ban Arfa has been hot and cold at Marseille and he could flourish here.

Two wrong don't make a right.

It was a mistake in getting Berba in the first place and it maybe a mistake in getting rid of him now. So lets say realistic offers are in the region of £10-15m - whocould we buy that would provide at least the same impac as Berba? No point selling unless you want to use the proceeds.

Over 2 seasons - soccernet

83 appearances (21sub)
26 goals
15 assists

Hello Sunshine! Didn't know you got promoted.

If we could do an exchange for Benzema, I am sure that most people on here will be happy.

i think we could get £15-20m for him. Everyone says Berba is a good player, simply not right for our system.

I reckon he would fit very well into Arsenals team.
