Next season I really want to see more energy for Berbatov, more fight, closing defenders down, tracking back, just everything, like you would get from a Rooney. I don't care if its not his 'style', any player can work their socks off and put in that sort of effort, if he starts showing some desire and determination he would win the fans over instantly. I imagine we'll get another striker so hes not going to be able to just walk into the team whenever we play 4-4-2 like this season, he'll have to work for it.

He is just not that kind of player. If you want someone to run, close down, track back etc you want Rooney or Tevez.

Berba is not that kind of player, never has been, never will be.

So next season, when he's older he's going to work harder?

Somehow I doubt it. It's a myth that he will somehow change his style just because of what's said about him in the papers and forums. He's going to be the same player he's always been. Exquisite at times, and frustrating at others. Even in Germany he had the reputation of being a sulky genius, and that's exactly what we've seen of him.

I bet you if he played for a club like Villa where he'd be the top man he'd bang in 20 goals a season, but with a club like United were expectations are high and fans expect graft and craft in equal measure Berba just isn't going to fit.

No he's not done everything you'd expect from Rooney, but then who does?

He's made more than one goal by closing down the opposition and winning the ball. His closing down and trying to win the ball back is about 10 times better this year than last year, and it baffles me why people don't seem to acknowledge that.

You think he's done 'everything, like you would get from a Rooney'? Really?

There is another Rooney out there?

There are people saying we need players like Ribery or Robben, when on the night our two wingers outshone them and both tracked back a lot.

Berbatov hasn't transformed into Rooney but, has visibly put in more effort this season. As I said previously, it won't matter how much he does, as there will always be someone that says it still isn't enough.

Dimi does things with the ball that make my jaw drop.

Id personally rather see him carry on exactly as he is, up front with Rooney, and reinforce the people behind them to compensate for the fact that we have two up front.

As I said earlier, the problem is not with Berbs, it is with the shape of our team which doesnt play to his strengths.

Then why say he has?

I'm happy to acknowledge he's upped his game this season. But it's beyond me why people are still so vehemently defending him. The last 24 hours have proven, very clearly and very cruelly, that Alex Ferguson has simply given up hoping that Berbatov is going to come good for United. He couldn't have sent a clearer message last night - he clearly could hardly bare the thought of removing a visibly crocked Rooney in favour of Berbatov. What irritates me most about Berbatov is the body language - it's unforgivable that it's been that negative, constantly, for that long whilst playing for United.

I think Berbatov has simply struggled to come to terms with playing for a club the size of United. He hasn't brought his Spurs form with him. He is capable of bearing the load of being a lead striker at a Bayer Leverkusen or a Spurs, but not a club like Man United.

I personally think the only way he has a future at United is if SAF brings in another high profile striker and relegates Berbatov to 3rd or 4th striker with Owen. That way we'd be back to having 4 top class strikers like in '99 and Berbatov would be under less pressure to change his game in his late 20's - he could come on, piss about for half an hour, do some pretty stuff and get some approving ripples of applause from the supporters.

It's quite a balls up by Fergie - 30 million for a striker who's not suited to being first choice at the club. He was arguably the last big money signing of the SAF era too - what a waste.

I think the problem is we've seen his best already...and it's not good enough.

Lets face it, this is a man who looked class with Spuds, Bulgaria, CSKA Sofia and Bayer Leverkusen. At the risk of sounding arrogant, United is a few levels above all those teams. I think he's showed some class, but overall, I'm not sure he can get much better then what we've already seen. This idea that he's got 10-15 more goals in his locker might just be a myth.

I defo agree that we have seen the best that Berba has to offer us already and those who think he will become a sensation next season at his age will be proven wrong I am sure. Berbatov is defintely a very handy player for us to have when we are playing 442 against weaker slower teams when partnering Rooney or Owen up front. He will never be the kind of harworking striker that Man Utd expects to have up front such as Hughes,Tevez,McClair or Cantona but he will offer us class and vision that is hard to find in players these days against the weaker teams so he is a decent squad player to have. A Tevez or Cantona he definitely will never be unfortunately.

He didn't score a single goal in europe this season, right? £30M for him, what a great bit of business for Spurs.

Hasnt scored in the champions league since the group stages last season. Obviously he didnt play every game, but he'd have played more if he did more than smash a few goals past weak teams.

Whatever way you look at his performances with Stats the fact of the matter is that after 2 years he has yet to score an important goal in a massive game for us and that is shocking. You can't include the Chelsea goal he scored well over a year ago as we were already 2 up in the last 10 minutes and cruising in that game when Berbatov scored. Meanshile Tevez had a great knack of scoring in massive games for us and getting to 2 Euro finals during his time here proves his worth. But thats a boring arguement that has been done a million times here but the fact of the matter is that whether Berba stays to be a squad player or not...... Fergie is responsible for signing the missing world class match winner to take the heat off Rooney that he was supposed to buy last summer.Nani is doing a great job at that but we still need 1 more world class match winning forward in the team and if the new Mexican turns out to be that player then great!

Lets face it the teams that have progressed this year in the CL are teh teams that have bought big apart from Real Madrid
Inter - Snieder, Eto'o
Barca - Ibrahimovic
Lyon - Bastos, Lopez
Bayern - Robben , (while also turing down ridiculous money to hold onto Ribery)

And we let Tevez leave because of this mediochre player. STOMP

Do you think Tevez would have accepted being on the bench for most of the big games this season? We've already seen him last season.

We might have been able to keep them, but make him happy... I'm not so sure.

He was actually a perfect bench player as he could come on and make an impact and increase the tempo of the attacking play.

I think he an even better player starting in my opinion for the big ones. Just look at who his first goal was against for us and his track record since coming to England. It's more impressive when he's started them.

And if he did that and scored match winning goals time and again, he'd see himelf starting some matches. He's one player who in his best form could force his way into the team.

I was just saying that Tevez was a great impact sub, probably the best since Solksjaer we've had.

Yep. Just continuing the debate over whether Tevez would have accepted a "bench role".

Both Tevez and Berbatov have had "bench roles" in a lot of our knockout champions league football. Tevez played a few more of those matches because he performed better in those matches and scored important goals in big matches. So no doubt he would have continued to have been benched in some games and come on as an impact sub, and in other games he'd have got starts.

Berbatov has now settled as just a sub in these matches and has never scored for us off the bench and rarely has a big impact. He's been unable to play himself into the side when given oppertunities.

i bet if you looked back to last summer in this thread you'd read a similar post from someone else

we made a real mistake in letting tevez go last summer and keeping dimi

no thanks berbatov - fair enough you can trap the ball well and ocassionally do something quite skilful but its time to pack the bags big man - you had your chance

if we got 15 million for him i'd be very happy

veron 2

letting Tevez go? Tevez is a mercenary. He accepted the best offer. Move on

I'll chop my bollocks off if he goes in the summer. Not a fan of him by any means by hes going nowhere.

Tevez knew he was being messed about being offered a deal and that he wasn't playing as often as he should. He was given a last minute offer and had another club show more determination to sign him so went there. Can't blame him.

Gonna hold you to this.

A club cant afford a player of his expense (wages) sitting out the big games even if they are on a good financial footing. Even less so when money may be more of an issue.

Get your rusty breadknife ready before this summer.

I love watching him play but some how he just dosent seem to fit here. Might be good thing for both parties if he moves on, pity fantastic player

Yep, can go back to admiring him from a far. There are certain players I like to watch who I don't think will do it at United.

Wouldn't have to worry anymore about him not doing it in the bigger game/,Laziness anymore as he scores 4 goals against the likes of Reading etc

same here, i think he is a unique player but doesn't fit to this team. I've been saying that since the whole Berbatov saga started.

why does it have to be rusty knife? i was thinking about one good swing of axe

anyhow, you've got a point. ROI from Berbatov is debatable but there is also one question- how much we would get for him? Dunno if money will be taken into account when making decision about him but i don't think it will be a main factor

 You seem to be so up and down when it comes to Berba, same here really

my attitude towards Berbatov is simple: never wanted him here in the first place, i didn't think and still don't think he was good enough in the first season with us. I was accusing him of slowing us down, twating around half line instead of seeking for balls in the box. He has been a different animal this season - he has been playing further up the filed and bit faster. that's why i wormed a bit towards him. I didn't have any doubts about Berbatov in his first season (ship the fecker out), now i have some doubts. nobody can deny that he has shown some good form recently.
