Declan Rice

How can anyone watch this Italian midfield here and decide “I know just what United need, a midfielder who’s crap on the ball”.

Blows my mind.

Think the last decade of our midfielders has warped too many people's minds about what a good midfielder actually looks like.

From Schneiderlin to Fellaini to Matic to McFred... guys who can do jobs but are, most of the time, terrified of having the ball. Especially of having the ball in their own half.

Rice is another in a long line of players coming from scrappy sides who are good when not in possession, but poor to average with it.

Our issue last season was that we had problems transitioning play from deeper with the McFred pairing. So what we need is a player who can evade the press and break lines via a pass or dribble at a high level or potential high level. Camavinga fits the profile from a potential POV, but Rice/Ndidi fail. So if it comes down to a either or situation, then we have to go with Camavinga IMO, from the players we're linked with.

Hes no Modric but to say he’s crap is nonsense

Jorginho is no Modric either, yet still light years ahead of Rice.
I want to see midfielders that can control a game and play great football, not players who are simply there to “see and cut out passing lanes before they even open up”.
Too long we’ve had a dysfunctional midfield devoid of any real quality, not since Carrick and Scholes have we had that if we’re being honest.

This makes no sense.

It kind of does if you think Rice is mediocre. Although take your point no fan wants that.

I like him but still a lot to prove. Can anybody really say he sbould be at the heart of a world class team?

Then there's talk of should we build around Pogba. In reality it's a player like Rice that really impacts those around him. He's the type you have to accommodate for with others.

Rice is more than that at club level. He controls games. Big games. He’s doing a job for England

Rice won't get credit on here by some till he's doing the business for a top team that isn't ours, it is the most obvious thing.

I’ll give him loads of credit if he starts playing like the kind of midfielder capable of doing what Italy did tonight. Doesn’t matter if it’s for England or West Ham.
I wanna see him improve ten fold in tight spaces, have better capabilities of dribbling out of trouble, at quick one touch passing, at passing between the lines and at controlling the tempo of a game.
Once he does that I’ll be right on the Rice bandwagon.

Right now he gets credit for playing like an extra centre half in front of the defence and for being positionally excellent at his defensive task.

The idea plonking Rice into our midfield will allow Pogba to be unleashed from deep positions with little concern for defending is frankly ridiculous. Rice is one player, not a force of nature. That is still not going to cut it with regards to Pogba, those half baked defensive efforts wont be solved so easily and I don't think that's what the manager will be banking on as we don't even know how long he will stay.

If we buy Rice then I think we are taking a long term view on things, that's the only thing I can see that makes sense because our options don't obviously complement him at the moment. We'd be saying that we fancy Rice for the long term given his age and the cultural fit, and therefore it's worth the outlay and worth it even though his skills aren't the first thing that pop to mind as we struggled for creativity last season.

Rice is actually the man we will build the midfield structure around. When you have him as the centerpiece then it is obvious what is missing. You need one or two options that are brilliant at taking the ball and brilliant at playing incisively. We don't have that at the moment, so my guess is we'll have some fairly unconvincing partnerships to begin with, that look a lot like this England setup in terms of poor ball progression. However, over the decade Rice could be here, that will obviously change.

I'm so tired of this 100m price tags teams are placing on every average player these days. How in any world is Declan Rice 100m?

First thing that comes to my mind when I think of Declan Rice is John Stones.

He had a decent season last year but has been very under whelming since joining City. He was meant to be the next John Terry.

It's another case of an English player being over priced and over rated.

I fear this is the case with Rice. Can I see him becoming a World Class DM for many years to come? No. Not even close.

I think we should stay away.

Just found out he is very good in video games. Is this what his image is based on? Mediocre player at best.

Also we have McTominay who is a big athletic and tough type and Fred as a runner. Those spots are filled. Bruno is our 10, Van De Beek we'll see but should be decent as an 8/10 type. We need a proper passer deep to control games.

West Ham are probably in the top 20 richest teams in the world. He’s their captain, and one of their most important players - they don’t want him to leave, and don’t need the money. So can demand a massive fee. So what.

No one really believes that though

we bought Sancho for 73m and possibly Varane for 50m. Rice won’t be 100m. He’s not a 100m forward. People are getting stressed over this number which isn’t true.

He's also not worth 60m. Fact is that West Ham don't want to sell, which is why they put that price tag on him.

I did not really watch much of him last season.

I have to say that his passing range and his comfort on the ball are both very disappointing from watching him at the Euros. It is a really small sample size but my hope was that we would look to sign a similar player to Carrick (if there is one out there) as I think that would be the best signing we could make for our current team. He seems a totally different player and potentially the wrong type of player.

I've read the wages being reported that he wants is £175,000 per week.

Over priced. If we are going for him it will most likely be Lingard in a swap plus cash to West Ham

The fans that don’t want him think that Rice’s fans (like me) don’t see his simplicity on the ball.

I just value his wonderful intelligence on the middle of the pitch - how he stops attacks building up in the middle of the park like he is a brick wall.

Let’s see if I’m just seeing things like a hallucination- I wonder if we play against Ukraine and have chances built up against us through the middle of the park or not, maybe Ukraine will score a goal like no other team has done so far in the tournament.

I'm not that sure Rise offers more then Mctominey on the pitch. Specially not for 100m. I would rather get Ndidi and Camavinga for 120m

Just a dream:

De Gea
AWB Varane Maguire Shaw.
Ndidi Pogba (free roll)
Sancho Bruno Rashford
Cavani

Henderson
Bailly
Ales Telles
Mctominey
Camavinga
Amad
Greenwood

why does someone else's money matter to you?

Why would you comment something like this and subject everyone on this message board to the lowest common denominator of intelligence? Why would you type this, read it over, and still click "POST REPLY" when a wombat with a blindfold could post something more intelligible? Why would you use the Earth's precious oxygen that has been transitioning from oxygen to carbon and back for millions of years from trees to dinosaurs to the atmosphere and all the way back just to single-handedly lower the IQ of every person on this message board through such a poorly thought-out, lazy, short-sighted retort?

What big games has he "controlled" at club level? He's in a team that thrives without the ball and typically score from counter attacks and set pieces. West Ham averaged 42% possession last season.
