Declan Rice

For 30-40m, it'd be a decent buy.

For 80m though, it'd ludicrous.

I can never warm up to him being an 80m player.

I really like him but this doesn't really mean much right now, he's just doing what Kane should've done. Anyway, his current contract is until 2024, option of another year. West Ham hold all the cards here for another two years, they can demand whatever they want, and it seems like they're doing just that.

Declan Rice is basically Matic in his prime. If James Garner grows as expected (I view him as a Kroos-type of player), we will have a prime Matic-Kroos midfield pair for the next decade.

The fee will be mental, but I can’t help but think even if we paid 80m for him we could sell;

Lingard, James, Van de Beek & Matic. That would probably cover his fee and we wouldn’t miss any of the above.

Wasn't he caught asking Maguire what it was like to play for United on international duty?

Never heard about that to be fair, I just think if its between us, and the fact he's clearly got an affinity with Chelsea he'll go there. But I think we can offer him a clearer route to playing a lot more games, and we'll probably pay him a bit more.

100% think he'd sign for us if Chelsea weren't in the picture, and he still might choose us over them, but I've got my doubts. Chelsea are a very attractive destination right now.

I like him a lot, but I also don't really think paying 80m is right. 50m plus Lingard though, that I can get on board with.

Surely if Utd want him and thats a big if?
Utd can offer West ham Matic, direct replacement, Lingard who they want and will make them better,
Then there's offering Pereira, DVB or Tuanzebe on loan for a season,

If Chelsea want him, they will get him.

Yeah unlike the Sancho one where I never bought into the notion he'd chose them over us I do think Rice would favour a move to Chelsea

Stays in London
Returns to the club where he was previously on the books
His best mate Mount plays there

Hard to see what we can offer beyond being a bigger club than them

we Can offer West Ham Lingard for a start . For Rice United would be a great move to a huge club that are on the Rise, a club with tradition and a global fan base. He would slot in perfectly in the DM role which would allow us to unleash the fire power we have in front of him now - Pogba , Bruno , Rashford , Sancho, Cavani ,Greenwood, Amad , Martial . And thats leaving out some players . I think we are a very good option .

That’s such an insult to Matic. He doesn’t dribble or pass the ball anywhere near as well as Matic did in his prime.

We might be better off offering them McTomminay or VDB on loan to be honest. Lingard might find himself this coming season, depends if Solskajer is done with him or not

For those saying he's limited, a coward with his passing, doesn't offer much going forward etc etc etc.

It's hard to disagree too much with all that because he hasn't really showed what he can to in the attacking sense. But Moyes and Southgate are cautious managers and when they have a world class holding midfielder at their hands, why not play him as that?
Rice is absolutely fantastic at sensing danger, holding the forte, intercepting passing lanes, being at the right place at the right time. A monster DM. Makelele-esque. Who wouldn't want a Makelele in his pomp? Except Real Madrid mind you.

It all really depends what Ole wants. If he wants a box-to-box CM, then Rice probably isn't the best choice.

The price for Rice is a BIG stumbling block though and makes him almost impossible to purchase.

I don't think Garner will end up a Kroos type player at all.

Not having a go, I'm just curious: who would you liken him to then?
Like a more mobile and aggressive version of Carrick or Matic. He's very good defensively, has an excellent passing range, is tenacious and has a knack for being able to control the tempo of a game exceptionally well for his age. I've no doubts he'd be good doing what Kroos does but I think he'll spend the majority of his career as the deepest midfielder. Playing as a 6 is partly the reason he flourished at Forest but struggled at Watford.

Bolded part sounds like an utter world class midfielder

I think he's going to be really good. Worth noting I watch a lot of the academy so I may overrate our players a tad

He’s going to be a good player. 50- 55 million and Jesse as I always said is fair and that’s taking English tax into consideration They can get fecked with their 100 million talk. We could get 2 or 3 players at a similar current level to Rice for that or sell Jesse elsewhere and pocket the cash. I reckon we should make that kind of offer and see if Rice kicks up a fuss. They have priced him him out of any move with that price tag. 100 million

I've never thought there was a lot between him and McTominay but concede Rice does have more natural defensive instincts which may mean he's a marginal upgrade. At the price West Ham are saying they'd want though you'd want a hell of a lot more than just a marginal upgrade

That’s pretty much my sentiments on Rice. Doesn’t make sense to spend 60-70m on a marginal upgrade. Ask McT to sit in front of defense and improve his tackling a little and you basically end up close to the same place but with more money in the bank to spend on Camavinga or Tapsoba

disrespect. He is Vieira in his prime. Garner will become busquets. We will dominate

Honestly man - I don’t see any Vieira at all. Maybe Gilberto Silva if we want to compare against an arsenal player.

I like Rice. Great at closing down space, carrying the ball forward, decent passer but the key attribute he has is leadership.

When we were winning the league the dressing room had many leaders and i like the idea of filling the squad with players with leadership qualities cause that means you get a stronger winning mentality in my opinion.

Don't advocate Rice for the prices quoted one little bit, but there are some noteworthy attributes he has that we don't have in our midfield set. He loves defending and screening - you can see he takes real pride and doggedly sticking to the instructions he is given. McTominay fancies himself as a rounded midfielder and holding isn't something he's hardwired to do. Even if you put him at the base of a midfield, he'll go walkabouts or towards the ball at times in the 90 with his concentration lapsing for enough time to create breaches that shouldn't be there. Rice is automaton in the way he'll recycle the ball and reset to his sentinel-like position right where he was told to go. That kind of dependability is a quality in itself and Rice isn't really getting any credit for that. Reminds me a lot of a Stiles or a Gattuso or any other terrier who couldn't care less about the game around him outside of doing what he's been instructed to do.

I don't think you play McTominay in lieu of Rice or vice-versa, as Rice is always going to sit and hold, as per his natural instincts just as McTominay is going to want to go box-to-box and get involved in the action wherever it is in the centre of the pitch. Rice is an enabler; McTominay is in need of a defensively responsible partner to play his game.

Rice also ushers in the possibility of a 4-3-3 as the anchor where McTominay does not.

100m is madness. I wouldn't pay more than 40m for him, as he is such a limited player, just England version of Mctominary, who prefers to sit deep.

Matic is better on the ball than Rice will ever be.
