De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

Sounds like speculative journalism now Courtois has signed for Madrid. Would it be that outrageous for DDG to say he wants to return to Atletico, or go to Barca? I hope he stays his whole career but realistically he hasn't yet signed a new deal, we had better get the paperwork ready sooner rather than later.

Barca and Atletico have Ter Stegen and Oblak. Both top goalkeepers, clubs happy with them and both players dont want to leave (Oblak apparently rejected Chelsea). So why should they buy De Gea for a huge fee? Ter Stegen wont move for a long time, and Oblak may move in the future, but who knows. Thats the only club i would worry about once Oblak would leave, but this doesnt seem to happen soon. And i doubt they would buy him. I am pretty confident Dave will be here for quite some time, the fans and club love him. We need to get our shit together on the pitch and be competitive, then there will be no issues. Dont think he will retire here, but he can move to Spain with 35 and enjoy a few years there before retiring.

They are both top keepers but I could see Oblak potentially going to PSG in a couple of years and DDG heading back to them. I think its just as likely though that he stays, the only worry is his contract is running out. Basically, we need to get that sorted as soon as possible.

@utdxtra: Mourinho on De Gea: “It was a collective situation involving the player, the agent and United. The agent didn’t create a war to try to achieve his objectives. He respected the club. He respected the player. The player was always keen to stay and happy to stay.” #mufc [Mirror]

Some pointed words from Mourinho, glad that Dave's deal seems to be wrapped up

It's likely gonna end up being our best bit of business this year

@utdxtra: Mourinho: “David played four matches in the World Cup and made one mistake. With that mistake, his team didn’t lose. He made that error against Portugal for one of Cristiano’s goals. The other guys because they play for Real, Atletico, Barcelona, were protected.” #mufc [Mirror]

Been absolutely loving these recent quotes from Mourinho, sounding like the young maverick Jose who had his players backs that I came to admire from afar

Someone should check how Riola is after those shots

Actually true. No one mentions how shocking Ramos and Pique were.

Seems to be some very old Jose-esque quotes this week, good, Mourinho with a point to prove can be a frightening prospect.

He was spot on

The same thing happened with Germany and the Bayern stars who stunk up the place in Russia, the players playing abroad were scapegoated instead

Should probably make him the highest paid player in the club since he is basically a 1 man wall. Heck pay him whatever just for that Arsenal performance last year, the guys incredible.

As if De Gea will sign a new contract. The club has shown absolutely no ambition.

Be surprised if he doesn't choose to run his contract down instead.

United officials did have a meeting with Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, in London yesterday but it was related to discussions about a new contract for goalkeeper David De Gea. The Spain No 1 is out of contract at the end of the season but the club have an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months to June 2020. United want to tie De Gea to a new long-term deal.

About the only good decision the club has made in 5 years.

I would be very surprised if he signs a new deal. Club in poor state management wise and being from Spain I can not fault players for wanting to spend the highlight of their career playing in the sun and good weather most of the time. It hurts when they leave but looking at it from a human perspective, not as a Man Utd fan, I get it 100%.

Would be a maniac to sign a deal while the managerial position isn't clarified.

He'll be on a huge payday as a free agent. Imagine PSG or Barca would be keen to offer him a massive signing bonus.

This is why it should have been sorted at the end of last season - people were telling me it will get done and it's just standard negotiations etc

He may want to return to Spain all he wants but that won't mean much as each of his potential destinations there already have top keepers. Real still have Courtois and Navas,Atleti have arguably the best keeper in the world outside of Dave in Oblak and Barca have another top quality keeper in Ter Stegen.

I'm really not all that worried over his future even with the state of things at the club,he doesn't have any realistic alternatives at the moment. I'll only be worried if he ends up letting his contract wind down completely

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he wants to leave this circus, one of the best keepers of the last few years and he's spent it here keeping us out of trouble, a keeper of his ability should be winning titles. I wouldn't begrudge him leaving either.

We should let him go, ask him even to leave, we are ruining him. Would blame him, would be happy for him and his career.

He'll lose long term since they wouldn't smash their wage structure for a keeper.
You don't move away from Utd for a pay day.

You can tell he loves the club.. but at some point he needs to seriously think about winning the big things. Maybe that time is now.

It was pretty obvious after he last signed his extension that we'd need to be challenging for top honours to keep him, the fact we've made little progress in the years since it was inevitable that he may not sign. I worry for our long term if he and Pogba choose to quit. Thing is though, what could we realistically do in the next season or so to turn around our fortunes to be actually challenging for honours?

Shouldn't be surprising. We're currently closer to West Ham in 15th than we are the top of the table. Not sure where he'd go though now Courtois has gone to Real - Juventus?

Although this is hardly unsurprising, it's worth baring in mind that - with Real now settled in the GK department - it may be up to DDG to drum up the external interest when it comes to contract renegotiation's.

The great news don't stop do they.

Imagine if the next managet comes in and find both De Gea and Pogba already leaving. I'll feel for him all honestly.

Juventus, maybe Atletico if Oblak leaves, PSG is always an option.

If I were De Gea, I would wait and watch. The defense is a gaping hole and De gea would have got bored of being a saviour all the time.

Having seen how the Fellaini deal went through, he can know that he could take that risk. It is not like Ed would say no if he comes back and wants to sign after becoming a free agent

No shock really. He's been loyal and professional to us during the Madrid saga and beyond. Truth is he's far too good a keeper for this current team. He should be winning titles and I'm sure the other big clubs will all be interested in buying him.

Real Madrid must be regretting the Courtois signing a bit if he does leave us.

We'll see.

Truth be told I don't think he's been great for a while anyway. None of our players have to be fair but you can't blame tactics for a keeper not making some of the saves you would expect him to.

Part of the reason I sort of hope we get someone in place before the end of the season, by that point we could be out of the CL and our star players would have their feet half out the door.

I don't think the best caretake in the world will bring enough stability to make a run of wins and secure top 4. Caretakers and midsesson managers usually do well in the cups and CL, let's be honest.

If we end up in Europe League next season, whoever will manage us next season, pretty sure Pogba will push for a move and De Gea will be open to offers.
