Dunno if it can be a reason

The qualification is only to the playoffs, I don't know if this team against a hypothetical Lazio/Roma/Napoli in august would reach the qualification, I have some doubt.

City have Tottenham and Southampton to play while we can still take points off Arsenal. 3rd really isn't that unrealistic despite what the doom mongers will have you believe.

Let him go if he wants to. But yeah, if he throws a hissy in the summer, then drop him and give the position to Valdes.

This is true. I think United will surpass Real soon in terms of spending power. The only reason then for players from the Iberian peninsula would be to return 'home'.

If you use the current exchange rate we have already overtaken them, and that was without the Chevrolet, Adidas and new Premier League and Champions League TV deals which will give us an extra £130m. We could have a near €800m revenue in just a few years.

here in the States...its crazy the amount of money they are spending on the Premier League...and United is on live almost every weekend.

If they are not already...United will be the biggest Football club on earth....dare say the biggest (forgive me) teh biggest sporting francise on earth.

I suspect the Glazers...will then sell us to some super-rich owner.... :(

Your post just excited the muppet inside me.

Without wanting to sound callous, flights to and from Madrid are frequent and take, what, 3 hours?

She's a singer/presenter, he's a footballer, it's not like they are going to have a lot of time together even if they live in the same city. It's a lame excuse. You're a long time retired as a footballer, he's going to have 50 years with her after he finishes.
What if he wants to start a family?

Would you be happy being a part time dad thats a 3 hour flight away?

@Invictus I made a similar point in the Hart thread that for a position like GK, having a "good" player who is likely to see out his career with you might be better than a "great" player whose loyalty is questionable.
It's why I loved VDS. His only fault was that he came to us 10 years too late, and that wasn't his fault either.

Am I the only one thinking that De Gea has dropped a level over the last few games? Some of the goals he's had fly past him have been fairly suspect. It started with that Sturridge goal at his near post. Give Valdes or Lindegaard a game for West Bom.

We all knew that DDG will one day return to Spain same as Ronaldo whose dreams were to play with a Spanish club. Its a shame that British talent isn't as good else we wouldn't bother buying them in the first place.

Oh comeon, he's been our best player of the year. Its not his fault that he's got the likes of Smalling and Mcnair in front of him

Well, he'll be facing technically many more better players than he does in the Premier League, so he probably won't prove to be as good as people might think he is. I do think it's very much a cultural thing a lot of the time when Spanish or South American players want to move to clubs like Real and Barca. The way of life is so different to living in Manchester, England. He's obviously got a good relationship and at the end of the day, if she really has no desire to live or base herself in England, then that is ultimately more important than playing for a particular football club. I'll be upset if he leaves, since I think he could be a real legend of a goalkeeper for United, but player loyalty is something of the past now and I won't be annoyed with him, it's just how it is now.

No..he's been wonderful this season. Against Everton, every single player dropped a level or two.....

Agreed he has been easily our best player and we would not be in the postion we are in now if it was not for his saves. The Everton game was a one off where our entire team was suspect. I've just been looking back at the goals we have let in and it seems he does let a fair few in at his near post. Something to work on?

Maybe, although I'd bet that letting goals in at the near post is where most goalkeepers faulter

Even the best keepers has their weak spots. However let us not kid ourselves. We wouldn't be 4th without DDG.

It seems De Gea is holding all the cards. We want him to stay, the players want him to stay, the manager wants him to stay, Madrid want him to leave and I imagine so goes his girlfriend. Apparently we have offered him a contract according to Louis Van Gaal. The question is how long do we let him mull the offer over for? Surely there must come a point where a resolution to be reached for the benefit of all parties.

He is gone I'd say. It ticks all the boxes for de Gea. Returning home to a ig club there, will become Spanish number 1 quicker also.

This in motion for some time. No coincidence we got Valdes in earlier this season, clearly covering ourselves. Shame but we need to start giving contracts to high profile players with at least 2 years left, not 12-18 months left

Well personally I'd reject Madrid's offer if it was that low, I believe an extra season with de Gea is worth more to us than €20 million.
I tend to agree with this. €20 m isn't much money for the club to lose out on and as you say, it may be worth keeping him another year. It's not like he hates it here by the sound of things.

That would have made sense if we didn't suffered from the 'value' and the chosen one effect. We simply couldnt afford selling our best player when we're at 7th place and we hardly had any truly world class players (not in name but in terms of form/talent) left.

Ya, the dark year set us back, and the fear of the unknown then for players. But it is down to the board as much as anyone to step in and offer terms when such changes are going on in a club.

It was a freak year, but should be some protocol to review players contracts earlier than 12 months left. Especially foreign lads who are possibly looking for a return home or move on again.

Well let's be honest, He isn't going to commit to anything now until Summer as there is only 4 games to go. I just hope he is actually motivated for these games because he certainly hasn't been the same over the last month.

David de Gea's case reminds of Toni Kroos last year who claimed that talks will be held with Bayern München in the summer. We all know how that ended...

It's nothing like Kroos. Bayern were not ready to succumb to Kroos' demand for a massive wage rise and were ready to let him go if need be. On the other hand, I am sure we are trying to do everything in our power to get DDG to sign on the dotted line.

Why would DDG agree to any terms when the club was in such shambles? He might as well wait and see what happens.

We need to understand that players go to training week in week out and know exactly the talent surrounding them. By doing such assessment they know were the club is heading to and how many years the club need to compete against the very best. Now, some will voice their concerns and risk the backlash with the club/fans (ex Keane or Rooney), others are happy to just get the pay check and live a comfortable life while some just bide their time and leave. The latter are by far the worse because those who complain are usually those who actually want to stay with the club and are using their influence to turn things around.

Whether we like it or not we're 2-3 years away from competing with Real. Why should DDG wait? He's a world class keeper, Spain is his home and there's every chance that our plans of rebuilding the side will backfire. Winning trophies = getting bonuses and he's got more chances of getting those bonuses with Real than with United.

That's something SAF never understood. Why should a top quality player wait for the club to pass through the transition period when he can simply move to a club which pay more than we do and compete for top honors year in year out? What guarantees does he have that the work being done during the transition period would be successful in the first place? A top quality player has nothing to gain from waiting 2-3 years until that young winger brought from Palace and that inexperienced defender brought from Blackburn will develop into the next this or that player. He's actually losing money because of it.

Hence why the club need to make sure it remains on top ALWAYS in terms of honors, fees and salary else we will risk losing players.. Transition periods are something of the past. You're either play to win or else you lose.

Are you having a laugh mate? You think that Rooney stunt was because he doubted the team's ability/talent. Really?

Am I the only person who doesn't care? I only want players here who want to be here anyway. He'll have been offered 200k a week to stay but if the pull to go back to his own country and play for Real, a huge if not the biggest team in the world with the likes of Bale and CR7, can anyone blame him? He's a Madrid lad anyway isn't he?

If Real want a player 9/10, they get them and that's with all of the above. If it wasn't this year and he keeps developing, it would be next. We've been here before....

Well its a mix of things which would take an entire page to explain. However, yes, I do believe that one of the reasons Rooney did what he did was because the team's quality was going down.

The next top up-and-coming keeper we get, we need to make sure he is from a lesser international team. Of course a top Spanish goalkeeper will want to play at a Madrid or Barca over us. Coutois is only happy at Chelsea because no club in Belgium matches up to them. If there was a Real Brussels FC who regularly dominated the CL and had a hoarde of galacticos streaming into their club, he'd be off like a shot. Unless we actually begin to rival the Bayerns, the Reals, and the Barcas in terms of our trophy output then it won't matter how much money we offer players from their countries, they will always draw in the best talent. I'm just hoping a young Mancunian worldbeater is waiting to be unearthed somewhere.

I dont blame DeGea for now signing a new contract, and i dont blame him if he wants to leave either. He is a human beeing and we can not expect everyone to be super loyal to Manchester United just because we think its the greatest club in the world.
He might have other priorities, like family and such.

What i do blame him for is not saying anything to the fans. I might be naive, but this is a club who let him play thru countless mistakes(because we knew he would turn out good, but still) and the fans always supported him and had his back, and for that i think he owes us fans to speak out.
If he wants to leave then fine, he should, but at least let us know. Speak up like a man.

He will be no where near number 1 unless Neuer somehow disappears of the face of the earth. Considering Neuer just turned 29 that is high unlikely.
He can overtake Neuer who is a brilliant goalie no doubt but not always in top form. He will battle it out with him and Courtois

Not sure that's entirely fair either. Mayb LVG and the powers that be would rather he didn't come out with 4 matches left and say "Oh, I'm off in a month, btw".
