How would people view him if he left us now? the club invested a lot in him as a very young keeper, the fans have supported him all the way and he's only 24. Surely he could pay us some respect and wait a bit longer.

I'd be disappointed. Probably more than that actually, he is my favourite player. If it is to be with his girlfriend or whatever then I understand and can accept it. If he is just going because it is Real Madrid then I would be annoyed. My confidence actually went up when our form improved but now it has gone again and I am worried.

Not that bothered anymore. Losing Ronaldo to Real was a blow but we have done as much for this guys career as he has done for us and indeed carried him for at least the first season. Owes us a little more than one season at his best if you ask me.

Next season we should be a lot less reliant on our GK and will be looking for what they can offer as a sweeper/keeper as much as shot stopping. De Gea is a great shot stopper no doubt but in other areas he is replaceable.
Harsh. He will easily, and rightly, be by far and away our player of the season this year for the second term running. Do you remember how long it took to replace Schmeichel? When we rank keepers, we all mention less than a dozen names and they don't become available often. DDG can go on to be one of the best ever.

If he left, while I couldn't bring myself to hate him because I'm appreciative of what he's done for us, but other than that I wouldn't care what happens to him professionally good or bad. When a player chooses to leave here without us forcing them like Ronaldo did and De Gea would, that's where my attachment ends.

I also think people are falsely making his girlfriend the scapegoat. He was already with her and he made the choice to leave her and come here. When he made the choice to come here, it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that he'd be here awhie and the repercussions that would have on the relationship. In my opinion if he leaves it's because he wants to play for Real Madrid. I'm willing to bet if we offered to sell him to Atletico that he'd opt to stay here.

I feel his gone next season. No reason whatsoever for him not having extended his contract with us already if there wasn't something else going on.

Cheer up folks, he's ours until he leaves - which we have no idea when will be.
Lets enjoy having him in the team instead of dreading the day he might leave.

Manchester United stars fear team-mate David De Gea is on his way to Real Madrid this summer.

Sections of the United dressing-room are convinced the Spanish goalkeeper has made up his mind to leave after four years at Old Trafford.

De Gea has one season left on his contract and has so far resisted United’s efforts to tie him to an extension, aware that Real want him to replace Iker Casillas.

Now some United stars have confided their fear that De Gea is Madrid-bound, a potentially huge blow given he has been arguably their best player this season.

If United’s worst fears are confirmed and De Gea does ask to go, they will demand the best possible price for him, valuing the 24-year-old shot-stopper at close to £50million.

Another option should De Gea go is a player-plus-cash deal involving Real’s Gareth Bale, a long-term United target who has endured a difficult second season in Madrid.

Although Bale has said he has no desire to leave Real, United will explore every avenue with regard to his potential capture should De Gea stand firm in his desire to leave.

Spanish TV channels have already claimed De Gea is off to Real this summer, with a key factor being the fact his girlfriend, singer and TV presenter Edurne, remains based in Madrid.

United are willing to hand De Gea a new £140,000-a-week contract, which would make him the highest-paid keeper in the Premier League.

But that offer looks as if it will be rebuffed, with United officials now facing up to the prospect of losing De Gea to Spanish giants Real.

De Gea became the first keeper to win United’s Player of the Year award last season and is favourite to retain it after another stand-out campaign.

But that accolade, voted for by the fans, is unlikely to be enough to keep De Gea at Old Trafford beyond this season if the whispers from the United dressing-room bear out.

United signed former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes, 33, in January, ostensibly as back-up to De Gea but also as insurance against losing their No.1 to Real, which now looks likely.

Did not know his girlfriend still lived in Madrid. Makes it obvious, doesn't it.

His contract is running out.
Casillas is on his last legs.
Real Madrid definitely want him.
Will offer a substantial amount of money.
They are among the current top three sides in the world.
They play 60+ games a year and have a real chance at every available trophy.
Will offer astronomical wages.
He's Madrid born. It's his home for goodness sakes.
Not to mention his fecking girlfriend of 5 years lives there. And she dislikes Manchester.

You can never know DEFINITELY of course, but it's sure as feck looking likely.

Hopefully his allegiance to Atletico or the fact that he's made astounding progress at United makes him think twice.

No quotes, so I doubt the credibility of the article. Although, I feel De Gea will be Madrid bound sooner or later.
No player or any club official will say anything regarding this matter on the record. Majority of the transfer stories doesn't have any quotes.

Up until recently we weren't playing great and it looked like we might not qualify for the Champions League. It didn't look like we'd be competing for the league any time soon let alone the Champions League.

Those are pretty big reasons not to renew in my opinion, and I don't blame him for waiting to see how things pan out.

So this is Mirror just throwing shit on the wall, I mean speculating and repeating the same old stuff we're hearing the whole year.
There were reports he will sign and is close to an agreement.

You think these United players would want to go on the record about this!?

Mirror. Sounds legit..

It's the journalist not the paper you need to look at; McDonnell is reliable. Of course a number of United players thinking De Gea is off, does not necessarily mean De Gea has actually made the decision to leave. They could of course be wrong.

That Mirror article quotes "whispers from the dressing room", and that's it?? I could have penned that during a toilet break staring out a small high window.

I think if we start winning trophies again and make strong runs in Europe, he'll stay for quite a while. I've nothing to back this up, other than the fact that he's not really voiced any unhappiness. All the "uncertainty" has been created by the media so far, with shit articles like this one.

I only posted this because it was reported by David McDonnell, any other mirror article is not worth posting.

Been great for us but you always got the feeling that if he did well, he be going at some point to Real. The way I look at it is an improved defence and midfield will mean less of the need for a top class keeper. Barca and Real have proved that for years. If Real does come knocking, we should really push for Bale to come back to England to utd

The whole article sounds like bs to me tbh.

The situation with his girlfriend is something that's difficult to manage too. She has a good career of her own and she won't leave Spain so they're either in for extended long distance relationship or a split up. Obviously it's much easier when you're millionaire and can travel back and forth quite often but then again they won't have free weekends and during season he'll barely have any spare time at all. Of course he needs to look after himself first but it's not like switching to Real Madrid would be a step back.

Real won't offer us more than £25m BTW. All the talk about potential record breaking fee is moot here because of his contract situation.

Worst case scenario: Madrid will offer peanuts but we will accept it because he has a year on his contract and wants to go. Then we will spend a fortune for a replacement, which won’t be half as good.

Best case scenario: We get Isco and Carvajal for him. We still have to buy a replacement but at least we get 2 exceptional players in positions we need to strengthen.

Obviously I would like him to stay but I wouldn’t put my money on that.

McDonnell (unlike some of his contemporaries perhaps) is not in the business of fabricating nonsense; he'll certainly have a source/sources for this. Worth repeating though, that these players could well be wrong (I seem to remember similar stories suggesting members of the dressingroom were expecting Rooney to leave imminently, in the midst of Chelsea interest in summer 2013).

Key factor is his gf, not Real Madrid by itself and trophies and all? :)

Some manc girl should seduce him asap then. :D

Gonna be tough.

Think it has been obvious for years that he will be at Real soon, just disappointed that he hasn't signed a contract and gave us a chance to cash in on him. If he is actually not ready to sign a contract then we would be better off selling this summer, no player is worth 15-20mn just for one season.

If he doesn't want to sign, I wouldn't sell for anything less then £30M. I'd rather we keep him for another year and make a real push at the PL and CL next season.

Even begin to ease Valdes into the team in the cup competitions.

Losing him would be shit. £30M or £40m isn't going to make an iota of difference. He is the one of the two or three genuine world class players that we have, we should do everything to make sure that he signs a new contract.

If Woodward wants us to be the top club in the world then he can't let the De Gea walk to Real Madird. Instead we should fecking low ball them for Bale.

Send death threats? Kidnap his family? There's really feck all we can do if we wants to move

Aye, that particular strategy is bound to work...

I fear the contract issue has gone on far too long now for there to be a positive outcome. But my belief from the day he signed was that if he was a success, as soon as Barca or Real came calling he'd be back off to Spain. Unfortunately, it would be the right move for him in more ways than one. LVG will just have to make sure his replacement has a less shit defence to work with.

Worst case scenario if he was to leave the Real Madrid player I would want the most would be Varane. The guy is going to be some player.
