Signing Valdes has atleast given us an insurance policy, it's not like looking for a replacement becomes a mad scramble.

Wouldn't be to bad if Casillas was part of the deal. We'd have some strength and dept in the goalkeeping dept. with him and Valdes then.

Jeez it's not 2008 you know. Casillas has been pretty poor the last few seasons, lord knows how he's Real's & Spain's no1, as he is no longer a top level keeper.
Would rather promote one of our younger keepers than get him in.

Use the exact same tone of voice that was used to keep Franck Ribery at Bayern. If not, we always use the threat of still keeping him for the last year, then putting him on the bench, and sabotaging his chances for Euro 2016.

They say sometimes big football clubs know when to act like mafia, so it's time we act like one.

lol I like that idea.

What voice is that.
And the 2nd thing, what good would that bring us?

Nothing, but its not like we are going to gain much from selling De Gea to Madrid. Its childish I know...

Its not as if they want to let him go..
You're making the whole story far too simple..
Moyes also wanted good but wasn't big enough for the job. I don't how anyone could accept this tendency as a status quo.

If we were still one of leading force in Premier League perhaps Dave didn't had doubts. Not everything was done in my opinion but that's too early too say. He's still Manchester United player.

I've felt for months he's going and can't see it changing. I hope I'm wrong.

Of course, I can see the appeal for a player, particularly Spanish, wanting to go to Madrid. And he's entitled to do what he feels best for his life and career.

Can't help but feel a bit disappointed with him if he goes though. He'll basically be buggering off at the first opportunity he's had. Not one contract extension and after the club stuck by him through what was a pretty average first 12-18 months.

It could be argued he's already repaid that faith this season and last which is fair enough. I was hoping for a bit more loyalty from him but the game has moved on I suppose.

We'll move on though. I'm sure of that.

I don't understand Madrid, Navas is perfect for them and is sitting on the bench. :(

I have been asking that for months. Navas is far from being some random Joe after what he gave to Costa Rica in the World Cup. So the real question would be: who the hell is making player selections here? They didn't even play him for a stretch of matches in order to make a proper assessment. Also, their obsession for Spanish superstars has to be a lot worse than some United fans' obsession for signing any top British player at all costs.

Signing Valdes has atleast given us an insurance policy, it's not like looking for a replacement becomes a mad scramble.

...

Valdes has been labelled shit by almost everyone, even Barcelona fans. What good would he bring to United if he couldn't cut it at Barcelona when they have the best ball-controlling team ahead of him?

Not true, Most Barca fans think he is their best keeper in their history. And he was really good in his last year there too by the way. I dont know why you say he could 'cut it', He chose to leave.

I simply don't get those seriously thinking he should sign a deal so we can get more money

Are those who think this just saying it because that would be a good thing or that is actually realistic?

Navas was amazing last season for Levante. If you look at last season's La Liga thread there are people there constantly praising him for his great saves. And then he went on to replicate that form in the World Cup as well. He's a great keeper possibly in the prime of his life. Having said that Valdes was also amazing in his last season for Barcelona. Many thought he was one of their best players in the first half of the season when he made some crucial saves. But he has had a long injury lay off since then and there is no telling how that has affected him. The injury was serious enough that it could have a permanent effect on his game and he's not exactly young anymore.

Just changed my vote. Held out till the last moment but i think its time to accept the inevitable. Adios amigo.

He left Barca, they didn't get rid of him. And not "almost everyone" is labeling him as shit, to do so would be stupid. The way I see it (as far as I can remember - not the beginning of his career) he was a very good goalkeeper behind an incredible machine that had a good defence. He then had two years where he looked dodgy and people raised questions, and then the season before his injury he would world class, arguably the most in form keeper in the world at that point. Now he's getting on now, but I've always felt he's more of a "positioning" goalkeeper as opposed to a "reflex" keeper like Casillas, so hopefully his reading of the game won't decline.

Just read his Wiki, he was at A.Madrid from 13. Was he ever a fan of either team?

Its a shame that we developed him into this monster of a keeper and he leaves us just before he gets into his best years. Just like Ronaldo, bastards.
He was.

"It’s been just over a week since I signed the contract with my new team. It seems like yesterday when I was four and joined for the first time Atleti in Casarrubuelos. From the plane I travel in to join Manchester United I remember with nostalgia, that this nostalgic feeling will be my traveling companion for a long time.

Like any child, every evening was accompanied by excitement and my parents (without their support none of this would have been possible) with the sole aim of defending the goal of Calderón someday.

A little over a year and a half I completed my dream and sealed it with two titles, I will never forget that feeling, I will never forget the people’s faces painted red and white. I can not forget neither the tears of Barcelona, behind the chants of support for us.

Today, 16 years later, I undertake a new challenge with the same enthusiasm of the boy and the eternal gratitude of a feeling, that only we understand, that I will carry forever in my heart regardless of the badge that adorns my chest.

I see from the airplane window how I leave behind my house, thanks to my new club for the opportunity it provides me with the security there to finish my education from a distance, that they only put the miles, you are proud of that boy who dreamed that the Calderon would sing his name.

A thousand feet above the ground I remember, now more than ever, all the teammates, coaches and club workers who made it possible that the child is now a man.

Winning a title there is a mix of smiles and tears. This is what happens to me now, tears because I am leaving, smiles for the illusion of something new, but also the assurance that someday I will return home. Thanks for everything."
Way to shit on your roots David, good luck playing for a team that won't have the patience for the errors the like we saw you make in your first year here.

I've thought he was off for at least 6 months.

He'll be a fecking huge loss. I honestly think he's the best goalkeeper in the world.

I just hope Dave is ready to be whistled at or booed the minute he's anything other than incredible. Will Atletico fans hate him now? I heard he was still well liked there even after he moved here. Can't see that happening when he moves to Real Madrid.

Vidic was always being linked with Madrid, even when we were any good, e.g 08, 09.

Our top, top players, namely the ones among the top 3 in their position always seem to be touted for them alone. Their galactico policy fuels this of course, but until relatively recently when Barca and Bayern upped the anti, the only place to go from United was Madrid or down. It's always been Madrid. Even now with Bayern and Barca (and arguably a few others) above us in the attractiveness stakes, we rarely see our players linked with them. It's always Madrid. The history is there, it sells papers. Their president relies on the wanking it produces to get into power.

It's never 'Bayern to test United resolve over Vidic' or the like. They might nab our targets from under our nose occasionally, but it's only ever Madrid that are meant to prey on us.

It's pretty frustrating how we've spent the time in waiting and helping him develop his talents and once he has turned into a world class keeper he's leaving. We should really think twice about buying young latin American players in the future.

Honestly, I'm gutted. Partially because I supported him and wanted us to sign him going back to when he broke into the Atleti first team. I saw him make massive feck ups in his first two years and defended him to the hill because I knew he was top class.

I hope Valdes gets given a chance over the next game or two, he's a top keeper on form, and he genuinely wants to play for us unlike David.

If he does go, and doesn't even sign an extension to ensure us a fair fee, I wonder how it'll affect the club's relationship with Mendes - the man who will have handled the move?

Could there be a silver lining in all this - us limiting our relationship with Mendes?

That period left a mark. Now that he has not played a first-team match for more than a year, it's even more of a problem. Also, I hope people didn't forget that he's only 6'0" tall and that any goalkeeper of such height will get crucified in the Premier League.

Not sure what the wages we pay him have to go with anything, that's the going rate for a keeper of his quality. You can't expect him to be unbelievably grateful for something the club had to give him in the first place.

As for Ronaldo, I'd imagine that was motivated by his relationship with SAF far more than any extreme loyalty to the club. I'm not going to expect any player to ultimately put the club ahead of their own best interests. Similarly, I wouldn't expect us to hesitate in getting rid of a player if it was in the club's best interest. If that's disloyalty then I guess football is an inherently disloyal sport.
I'm saying that De Gea really hasn't paid us back anywhere near as well as you think he has, and I'd like to think he'd come to the same conclusion on reflection.

I also completely disagree with your implication that players will form relationships with their managers, not their club itself. Ronaldo for example constantly talks about his love for Manchester United as a club and its fans, and saying he signed his extension solely because of his love for SAF is pure guesswork. I would expect Gerrard feels love for Liverpool, Terry for Chelsea, Buffon for Juventus etc, not just for the different managers they've had.

Of course De Gea is perfectly free to leave, I'd just like to think that he himself would like to do so in a deal that is beneficial to ourselves, the club without which he may not have the kind of career that is laid out in front of him.

When has this crook ever actually benefited us? Annoying how much power he has.

Why don't we get Navas in exchange? He's rotting away there, it's crazy. I also don't understand Madrid.

Just as I wrote yesterday: they better start harassing Chelsea's top players this summer for a change.

Actually if we just look at Real Madrid's needs he was a TOP keeper before he came to us. We improved him in terms of high balls (but he is still not really good at that) and physical strength, but his reflexes, handling, shot stopping was brilliant even before he came to us and that's what Real Madrid needs.

Sad to hear that he's surely as good as gone today judging by Van Gaal's comments, but we should be grateful for his performances this season because If it wasn't for De Gea then I don't think we would have made back into the Champions League for next season.

He's not going on my blessing but I won't say a bad word about him, he's a Madrid man who probably wants to return to his hometown, can't be too harsh on him for that

Was getting annoyed with him too three pages ago and thought about this, was he Ronaldo's agent when we signed him? That would be the last time he actually did something that helped us. It's a disgrace, just like his mullet. Someone should call the police and report Mendes.

He would have never survived at Madrid making the mistakes he did for us in his early years. I just hope we get a good price for him but seeing as its the last year of his contract I fear we will be fleeced.

Should learn our lesson like Arsenal. If we're buying young, preference should be the top british talent. Spend big on the foreign finished articles (Ozil, Sanchez, Cazorla etc). No point wasting our time for them to feck off at a loss.

Yes, that is true, but the mistakes he made he wouldn't really have made at Madrid, because it's not a such big deal in Spain handling with crosses and these were the only real mistakes he made while playing for us.

@carvajal you got there in the end buddy
At this point and with the typical official Marca cover I think it's done , although it was on track for months. Sorry for your sadness, even now you show a lot of understanding and respect (I wouldn´t). Regarding Madrid ... as you can imagine it is a brutal change of having a declining Iker and suddenly change for David. I am looking forward to troll Atletico fans in Marca . I think He was fine in Manchester and since the beginning I think this is his main reason to leave:

No doubt they'll get lucky and Hazard will profess his love for Chelsea whilst referring to La Liga as 'the SPL with sun'.
