He's not supposed to do anything for us. His job is to represent his clients' best interests. We're not his client. De Gea obviously wants to go to Real, so Mendes is making it happen. It wouldn't be normal to disregard his client's wishes for us.
We are one of his client's as well. If we want a player and he can get the deal done, he would effectively be working for us for a fee - so we are one of his biggest clients. It's just a different relationship between the player and agent and agent and club.

Beeb running with the replacement story.

David De Gea: Manchester United already have replacement in mind
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says the club already have replacements in mind should goalkeeper David De Gea decide to leave Old Trafford.

The Spain international is out of contract next summer but has yet to sign a new deal offered by the club.

Van Gaal said he does not know if the 24-year-old will stay, but said plans were in place should he leave.

"We have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised always," the Dutchman said.

Reports in Spain suggest De Gea plans to join Real Madrid.

Contract negotiations with De Gea, who joined the Old Trafford club in 2011, were opened earlier this season, and Van Gaal recently confirmed the club had offered the player "a lot of money" to stay.

"We want him to stay and I hope he shall sign," Van Gaal said.

However, he stressed only De Gea could decide on his future: "You have three parties [involved] and the most important party is always the player.

"It's dependable not of Manchester United, not of me, because we want him to sign. He has to sign, he has to want to stay here at Manchester United. I don't know [why he hasn't decided]."

Van Gaal has spent more than £150million on seven new players this season, and United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has said the club will be "active" again this summer.

That has prompted speculation the club could move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane or Wales' Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.

When asked about the pair, Van Gaal said: "I have seen that I buy everyone in the world but it's not like that."

If he does not want to be here there is nothing you can do about it. And at the end of the day we are lucky the rest of the Football world has to deal with this constantly.

De Gea leaving for Madrid means feck all. It certainly doesn't make us Madrid's feeder club, that's a ludicrous thing to say. For all we know the reason could be his girlfriend wanting to sunbathe her ass on the Madrid streets (and it's probably true).

Ronaldo and possibly De Gea leaving for Madrid are the exceptions, not the rule. It's just unfortunate that it's happening for the second time in 6 years.

We're up there with Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid in terms of stature. People should accept the fact that sometimes key players will leave us for Madrid (Ronaldo, De Gea) and sometimes key players will leave Madrid for us (Di Maria and possibly Bale).

Spot on.

fecking sucks. Shame that de Gea turned out to be a bit of cnut and backstabbed his Atleti' roots.

Yep that's how it works. And like I said, De Gea seems like a nice fella and has served us well, so if he wants to go back to Madrid he really should do it. It's just very weird that we're supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in the world, yet we constantly seem to get outwitted by some Portugese dude who used to work in an ice cone factory and occasionally wears a mullet while he is already in his forties.

I guess to me something just doesn't add up.

We only have ourselves to blame.

He is too good a keeper to be playing for a team as poor as we are at the moment. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We are just about the 4th best team in a mediocre premier league.

He wouldn't be a massive loss though - we have much bigger problems than who our gk is regardless of who we stick between the posts.

It's a totally understandable decision and good luck to him and all that but I really hope we don't have to go through the same sort of fanboyish fawning that has followed Ronaldo since he left. Albeit, even as I say that, on RonCafe, I realise how unlikely it is.

We will have some broken hearts, but I think they will get over him easier than Ronaldo

If we are canny we can come out of this smelling of roses.

Madrid have the prospect of a transfer ban next season so need to get this done if they do want him, this may push the price up, or push one of their star names to us, lets say we could get Bale for £40 million + DDG, then replace DDG with Cech for £10 million, we could then sell Di Maria for around £50 million, net spend £0 and we have greatly improved one of our forwards, and not regressed our goalkeeper position by very much at all.

If only life was so simple, likely scenario we flog DDG for £25 m, and buy Lloris for £30 m........I think i'd have a little cry if we did

Mou won't sell to a PL club yet alone Man United.

I'm not so sure. They sold us Mata. Cech's in the last year of his contract. If Cech wants to come here, I think Chelsea would do a deal, he's been a great servant to Chelsea and I doubt they'd force him to go elsewhere.

I'm assuming that we won't have given him permission to talk to Madrid so this would be a case of Real tapping up, correct?

Well yeah, if that's the case, I mean if we didnt give him permission.

It's just part of Real's games. Spend a year leaking shit to the press (Marca/Madrid Radio) and just before the transfer window opens the good old agreed personal terms trick. The club will deny it but by that point it's too late. Sadly it always works unsettles the player and Madrid get what they want. Worked with Zidane, Figo, both Ronaldo's the list goes on.

De Gea obviously has reasons to go back to Madrid but I'm probably being naive here but I think David seems to have more class then that. I doubt he's agreed or even talked to them.

Just read his Wiki, he was at A.Madrid from 13. Was he ever a fan of either team?

Its a shame that we developed him into this monster of a keeper and he leaves us just before he gets into his best years. Just like Ronaldo, bastards.

We'll see, but I am doubtful. I would welcome him here but LvG might prefer a more long term solution.

Yup, I'm thinking we have to push for him and it might happen

And I simply do not see a better option. It's almost too perfect...similar to van der star signing

Not joking but De Gea could potentially become the best keeper of all time. He's the type of keeper who could be the difference between winning the league title and CL and finishing empty handed. He's that good. When you think of the amount of crucial point saving saves he makes and the amount of games he has single handedly won on his own you simply can't replace that. No keeper in the world has done what De Gea has been doing this season. If we can put a solid defense infront of him then we will be practically impregnable next season.

Give him 300k+. Make him the highest paid player in the world. HE MUST STAY.

Yes his family are huge atletico fans, but I suppose even they wouldn't stand in his way.

I totally agree. I also doubt that a British paper would know what happened between a Spanish player and a Spanish club. The papers are just flinging shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.

It will be interesting to see how the fans react to him on Sunday in what is looking like will be his final game for us :(

Have no issue with De Gea wanting to leave now, a player should be happy on and off the pitch and it's a great opportunity for him. But Madrid should be paying top dollar for a keeper who will be number 1 for club and country for at least a decade. Instead we'll be left in a weak negotiating position and it'll be hard not to feel disappointed in him.

It still sucks when you're a top team losing players before they hit their prime, losing them when they're the best in their position in the world at the 'point of sale', losing them when you still want them and being powerless.

Real didn't want Di Maria anymore and were happy to let him go because they didn't value him the way he and his agent did. They get rid of players when they're good and ready. Its not our fault. We offered these players everything, but for me until this sort of thing happens to Real Madrid or even Barcelona we can't really say we're at their level all the way. Its not just about money at this point.

To be honest if he doesn't sign a new contract so we can get a good transfer fee, I will be very disappointed in him.

Really? Didnt know that.

I cant imagine a boyhood United fan, who plays for us and then leaves for Madrid. Then 4 years/5 years later he comes back to play for Man City just because its in the same city?

I reckon he would, Mourinho has a bit of class when it comes to players moving on, with Cech he would likely give him free choice to where he goes, and lets be fair he wouldn't exactly be improving us in that position, unlike Arsenal.

He's under the thumb mate. Do you really think he keeps that bumfluff because he thinks it looks good?

Think it's time De Gea spoke out about it tbh. Should he decide to go, Sunday will be his last appearance in a Utd shirt at Old Trafford and he deserves a proper send off, regardless of this situation.
