We can actually play hardball even with his contract due to them possibly being banned for a year or two for signing players

So I am sure Utd can still get a very good fee for him, not that I really give a shit about fees received

We should play hardball, also to DDG. This is his chance to be in the first 11 at the coming Euros. Threaten to bench him for the season, not the way you want to play it, but feck, if its business for him it is business for us. I expect Woodie to push it to the limits and get us the most out of a unfortunate situation

If this is true, its an absolute disgrace, if he wanted to go to Madrid, they should have went for him when he was at Athletico, why after like Ronaldo when they become the finished product they all just leave

Commercially we are the 2nd biggest club in the world, its a bloody joke how this happens, you wouldnt see RM, Barcelonas, Bayerns best player move to us or the other aforementioned clubs

Barthez was highly fecking rated, though. Was one of the supposed best in the world. Had won the World Cup and European Championship with France, was a hell of a lot more regarded than Lloris. Yet, he turned out to be shite for us.

You won't believe me, but in France a lot people knew that it was a mistake , Barthez wasn't good physically and was rash sometimes, Barthez wasn't the best french goalkeeper too. Martini, Lama, Landreau were seen as better goalkeepers a lot of people suspected that the defenses Barthez played with were the reasons of his performances.

For some reason if De Gea does go to Madrid I can see us getting Bale. Obviously not a direct swap though.

I'm pretty sure he is off to Madrid the signs are out there. It's very sad, but at the same time it's understandable that he wants to leave to a team as good as Real Madrid is currently and if he wants to leave there is nothing to be done about it. I hope that we sell him this season for good money instead of letting him go for free though if he doesn't want to stay. Hopefully we end up getting a good deal for him and use those funds to strengthen our defense so that we don't need a keeper as good as DDG to bail us out in the season. I believe Valdes will be our keeper next year.

if its business for him it is business for us.

It's not business for him though, is it? He wants to move primarily for family reasons, according to everything I've read.

We're actually offering him more money.

I hate it but that's the way it is, especially for players who grew up in those regions. They'll always go back when one of Barca/Real come calling. We wouldn't be having this problem with a goalie we developed from Scandinavia for instance.

If he has a shred of decency he will sign a new contract, so we can get the maximum fee for him next year if he really wants to go home then.

I'm actually starting to hate this guy with a passion.

Just sign a new contract so we can at least get a decent fee, then you can feck off and get booed at the Bernabeu when Messi scores 5 goals past you.

I'd actually say 2 and a half season's good form and then getting us shafted on transfer sale fee is a poor return for the £18m, sizable wages and effort we put into him.

No club is a charity, so why does any player show respect and loyalty to the club that helped him develop? Why did Ronaldo choose to in an almost identical situation?
Because of his relationship with Fergie.

If he leaves, I'd have no resentment for him. The bitterness it seems to conjuring up seems a bit mental. People hoping that he fails? I don't see what is worth getting worked up about. For all this "the fans have stood by him" noise, he's quite easily repaid that in supreme performances this season, making impossible saves and saving our blushes. What else does he owe us?

I genuinely think he is the 2nd best in the world currently - better than Courtois - and he's not that far off Neuer, IMO. An elite player should be playing at the elite level. We are 2-3 years minimum away from being a force in Europe, if we make the right decisions and if we get the right manager in after Van Gaal, and those are truly enormous IFs.

Can't really blame him if he does not want to be a part of a project where the future is relatively uncertain, when he could go to the biggest club in the world, be their undisputed #1, be his countrys #1, possibly go on to be captain of both, and be with his missus and his family.
Good post, agree with it all.

Will be hugely disapointed if/when he leaves, however im in the minority that think that valdes will be excellent for us.

Thiago from barcelona to bayern
Figo from barcelona to real
Kroos from bayern to real

I see you mean because of the Solksjaer and Schmeichael , too bad there isnt much talent there though

But even then we are the only "elite" club who are up with Bayern, Barca, and RM, who cant keep our best players, really sucks. Plus I dont understand people wishing him the best and being happy for him if he leaves

Thats just small club mentality, when one of your players makes itto the big stage and fans are proud seeing their former player tearing it up at the top, but we are Manchester United ffs

The fans stayed with him in his first 2 years, where especially when he first came he really struggled, and got slaughtered in the media, now he`ll be voted PPOTY 2 years in a row , especially for a GK, you cant ask for better

If he does go, it's the final piece of evidence to show that we are now Madrids feeder club

Dont know about Figo, but Thiago and Kroos left both because they wanted playing time(Thiagos case), and Kroos(wanted more wages). De Gea is our first player on the teamsheet, plus im sure wages wise he defintely gets what he wants

They left for what they considered to be the better deal for themself. De Gea would be no different.

One of these days, we will have to take one of Bayern's, Barcelona's or Real's players away.

Like roykeane19 just mentioned, that's small club mentality we're having (is it something that's more present in England?). If anything, United have to make sure we are one of those clubs that can keep top players at the club and say "feck off" to the rest.

Don't think he'll do as well at Madrid imho. It will be very interesting to see how he reacts when the fans get on his case once he's made a few mistakes. I don't think he's naturally a very confident person and can see him being upset at any negative reaction to him.

In any case, we need to get a good fee from Madrid somehow. We got a £750M deal from Adidas in the year we placed 7th in the league. Therefore why can't we play hard ball with Madrid?

We tell Dave, you can go but Madrid need to pay us what we want, or threaten to put him on the bench for the next season and thus scupper his chances of making Spain's national team for the 2016 Euros.

The only thing that's helping me understand it is his missus. The real irony for me is that he never would have been afforded the time by the RM fans that he was given at Utd when he had a shaky start.

I hear you. Once players leave united this way after we develop them I couldn't care less how their careers turn out. Isn't this what most united fans do with Ronaldo? I don't know about you but he holds no special place with me just because we had him first.

Tbf a lot it is to do with Manchester's location.

Hargreaves. We were about to sign Thiago but Moyes decided against. We were about to sign kroos, but that was with Moyes in charge.

As far as i know, we sold Becks because Fergie wanted to, and RvN as well. Ronaldo went despite us wanting him to stay and De Gea would be the same as him.
I wouldn't call us feeders going by 1-2 sales that we didn't want ourselves.

I get the smirky joke, but loads actually believe we are a feeder club because it gets tossed around.

Too right. Looks like we're just a stepping stone for some of these elite young players.

Realistically, when he signed, everyone knew if he made it to the top of the game, there was no way he wouldn't go back to Spain at some point...as a keeper though, he could conceivably stay here for 5 more years, and still just be hitting his goalkeeping prime...which is a scary thought...

In the end, if he wants to go back to Spain, then fuck him, let him go...no player is bigger than the club...

We'll get someone else in, and we'll be fine...Mark Bosnich isn't doing much these days...

Its become the norm at our beloved club to constantly 'look over our shoulders' when it comes to our top talent. We don't have it like Barcelona and Real...we really don't.

Same I couldnt care less about Ronaldo, he never had any loyalty or "love" for united, all that is for Madrid, we were just a means to an end for him. The reason many fans clamour over Ronaldo and like him, even though he left, despite us trophy wise performing better than RM, even in Europe, is because people like to be associated with greatness, even though they get nothing from it

When we signed him I had a feeling this would happen eventually, but not this soon. I guess when it comes to goalies you really shouldn't be looking to get a few seasons out of a player, its the one position that should have players tied down to long term commitments.

He has to ask himself where were Real when he needed a massive club to take the chance. We are that club. They have won 5 titles since 1996. 4 European Cups. Huge Club. But lets be honest. When it comes to glitter its the theatre of dreams all the way... :)

True. Arsenal fans were the same way with Henry and even Fabregas until he joined for Chelsea. I remember some of my Arsenal supporting friends saying we'd never get our hands on Fabregas (when we made a bid for him under Moyes) because he was too loyal to Wenger and Arsenal to ever sign for another PL team. I was like really?! He's not your player anymore! As far as im concerned Fvck Ronaldo and Fvck De Gea the minute he puts pen to paper for Real

Yep. One European cup in 12 years. Sounds better that way LOL.

If, for instance, Manuel Neuer was a massive United fan, and left Bayern to come here, doing what De Gea did, we'd all cream our jeans over him...he'd be a fecking legend...

We can't criticise De Gea for doing the same, basically, he's going home, to play for one of the biggest clubs in his home country, where he'll be undisputed No 1 for both club and country...

Its a no brainer for him...
