Dayot Upamecano

There was a bit of drama after we signed him but he was never on redcafe's radar beforehand and a handy rule of thumb for the hype over academy talents is whether there's a thread on here about them before they join us! We hardly ever seem to land the kids with that sort of profile. Not that I think it's a major problem. Might not even be an actual thing. Just seems that way.
To be fair, I don't think many academy talents have threads on them here at all. Even this one was created when we were thought to have signed him.

Is it a new trend though? Seems like we've regularly been that Jewish kid at Christmas when the really hyped continental teens are being snapped up. Even when we do get a gem like Januzaj or Pereira it hardly ever comes with the same fanfare you get with some other clubs new signings. I remember a massive palaver about Fran Merida joining Arsenal for example. Don't remember the same sort of hooplah over any foreign kid joining our academy. It's funny actually, the one kid who will probably go on to be the pick of the bunch - Pogba - seemed to almost slip under the radar. Or am I imagining that?
We generally try to keep things quiet and ask the player and the other team to do the same until the deal has actually been completed and even then its often not actually made public for a while where as a lot of the other clubs allow the player or club he's joining from to make it public as soon the deal has been agreed. This often leads to a lot of hype around the player often based as much on the club he's joining as it is based on his talent and people who have never seen the player hype him up so they can claim they knew about him before anyone else. An awful lot of clubs and journalists also use United's name to hype up a player where there has never been any interest because they are safe in the knowledge that United don't comment on youth players. Pogba was fairly hyped before he joined us because he had impressed for France at youth level and was wanted by Arsenal and Liverpool its just that even though its only a few years ago there wasnt quite as much of a spotlight or as much reporting on youth football as there is now.

That's neither here nor there, mate, especially since some of your examples are more than a decade old. I'm fully aware of every single foreigner brought in to the academy for the past 15 years or so, that does nothing to change the fact that these days we're increasingly less feisty than certain other top clubs when it comes to these types of transfers. And with City going gung-ho on the local meat-market, we really shouldn't be losing out in a tug-of-war with Arsenal for someone we've clearly identified as an ideal addition, especially given last summer's fancy talk about the need to revamp our long-term recruitment policy. So there seems to be an acknowledgment of the problem, which is well and good, now let's see us (literally) put our money where our mouths are.

Agree with that

http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/...r-set-for-quick-transfer-to-manchester-united

Manchester United almost signed young French defender Dayot Upamecano during the last transfer window. At the beginning of February, just after the transfer window closed, French newspaper La Voix Du Nord reported that Manchester United and Valenciennes had agreed a price of €450k which could have risen to €900k.

Then, a few days later, France Football also confirmed a transfer was almost completed and they cited 'administrative reasons' as holding the deal back. Upamecano, said France Football, had been given the grand tour of Old Trafford and also Manchester United's Carrington facilities. It was just a lack of time that made the deal collapse.

Valenciennes have serious financial difficulties and that makes a sale almost inevitable. This week's edition of France Football magazine has what they call a 'confidential' claim on the matter, saying that the 16 year old is set for a quick exit, with Manchester United named as the club working on that. Arsenal have also been credited with interest over the past month or so, but there was no mention of them from France Football.

If the original claims of Manchester United agreeing a price were correct then it's no surprise the Premier League club would be working on a deal for the summer.

Axel Tuanzebe says no.

Indy Boonen's signing confirmed that we're having a U18s team next season with good names.Zak Dearnley,Angel Gomes,Indy Boonen,Axel Tuanzebe,Dayot Upamecano,Faustin Makela,Tosin Kehinde,RoShaun Williams.Dreamy stuff.

Wouldn't put it past us to have somebody on our books with that name in the next few years.

Chelsea U18's always have some great names: Fikayo Tomori, Miro Muheim, Faiq Bolkiah to name a few. I'm still upset they got rid of Nortei Nortei and Fantaky Dabo :(

Stewart Gardner's going to need counselling after every fixture.

 sounds like a Carry On script

Not sure if it means anything but he followed Gribbin,Gomes,Warren and Williams recently on Instagram.

hope it works out if only for the chant

imagine 70k singing Day-o, Daaaayooooo, Dayot come and he wants to (insert something)

Just genuinely awful. Why is he so highly rated?

Not helping himself is he. Terrible games against City.

He goes from having amazing games to being utterly catastrophic because of his aggressive playstyle. Still young for a defender so should learn to be more smart with his pressing. I've always said he reminds me of Lucio when he was at Bayern.

The goal was just unlucky though, he slipped after being in position to stop Haaland, could have happened to any defender.

I was gonna make a new thread.

Anyway, he's one of those defenders I can't remember having a good game. He played like the worst version of Phil Jones in those two games against City. France going from Varane to Upamecano is gonna be quite the downgrade or maybe Deschamps will opt for Salliba after a while.

Remember when he was rated as highly as Konaté when they were a partnership? Looks like the scousers got the better end of the bargain there.

S-H-I-T

I'm not even sure that it's enough to describe him. His poor performances against City have to be the worst I have ever seen from a single centre-back in a knockout stage.

Well let’s not forget he got sent off in the first half, which was undone by the slightest of offsides.

He also handled the ball which gave city the penalty not long after.

Saliba and Fofana should be ahead of him but Deschamps has his favourites.

Offside is offside though, Upamecano might have gotten the ball had Haaland been onside. The handball was 50-50, would see it not given as well given that the ball didn't hit Upamecano far from his body.

He's the type of player right now that people will look to blame for everything because one mistake can lead to a goal. He's been crap no doubt, but Sane has been just as bad with all the chances he missed in the first leg and this match.

He's been an utter shambles across both games .

Everyone has the odd game but to have two in a row like this in such high profile games seems unusual, he's been fecking awful.

At fault for maybe 3 of the goals? Gave away a penalty, and was lucky to have a red card overturned really.

Maybe the most dreadful knockout performances ever? So bad you wouldnt be shocked to learn he was paid off. A horror show and if I was the new manager Id probably look to sell him off the back of these 2 games.

He was nowhere near the ball, he made the decision to either foul him or get in his way as last man. The fact Haaland was offside is immaterial to that shit decision making

He's how I'd imagine Maguire would play in any big pressure CL knockout game for United.

He really should've never started this game.

The only reason the red card was given is because ref's are told to wait for the action to finish before raising the flag. If the ref raised the flag on time then there wouldn't be a discussion, this is what I mean by some unnecessary criticism. Countless times in matches defenders play the attacker offside and it's close, Upamecano should not be bloody criticized for correctly playing Haaland offside.

90% of players who get hyped always end up average to shite.

Didn't he was linked to us in the same time that Gabriel(and then he went to Arsenal) was ?

I remember our games against Leipzig (?), and Konate was the much better CB. THis guy was rash.

Didn't Marcus came in the second half and immediately scored 3 goals on his head ?
