Day 8 | Slovakia vs Ukraine | Poland vs Austria | Netherlands vs France

It's an easy decision to make for the referees. However, goalkeeper doesn't actually spot him until after the ball has already flown past him. Replay from behind just shows that he's not balanced after blocking the first shot

Goalkeepers make "impossible" saves all the time. There are endless YouTube compilations of such saves.

It's not up for the officials to decide how balanced he was or how aware of his surroundings he was.

The Dutch guy was a) offside and b) stood right by the French goalkeeper (between him and the path of the ball) blocking any attempt he might have made to save the shot. As you say, it was a very easy decision for the officials to make and, as such, the only daft thing is that it took so long for them to confirm it.

Goalkeeper is never getting to that shot, whether the Dutch player is there or not.

Does it matter?

I don't think the referees have to estimate the keeper's chance of saving it. That's a never ending discussion. The reality of the matter is that the dutch player prevented him from diving for it even if he wanted to.

First 0-0 of the tournament Incoming. In a game you’d expect goals

Those saying it's a fair offside

If that's the case that it's obvious, the second issue is how long it took to come to that decision from Atwell. It should have been done quickly, as we've seen other teams sort out.

It's no surprise the English refs make VAR into a farce
That's what I think. It was a fair offside, the keeper would have to jump through the offside player. It doesn't matter if he could have gotten to it, this is simply interfering with the keepers play.

But it's ridiculous how long it took. Watching it on German television, they were able to get their referee pundit live, who explained the rules and commented on not giving the goal would be the correct decision and then went off air again.

The commentator than had to fill the void until the VAR decision was finally there. That's just far too long.

Not impressed with Holland. Koeman is not that good a coach

Holland are fecking garbage. These are not even hard passes to play.

England can be happy, their two games have just been replaced as the worst game this Euros.
What a waste for a Friday night.

Really? Our best players are defenders and France is known as a defensive team who wait for Mbappe moments. Both coaches are pretty much in the safety first mentality too.

If there was a 0-0 game, it would be this one.

If they'd given that decision quickly, it probably wouldn't be a talking point. Taking so long to make what should be a simple decision makes everyone (me included) hope for and rationalise for a goal.

France haven’t been good at all so far this tournament.

neither have the Dutch but they have a pretty average squad and are missing their best player, at least.

This match is making me want to start watching Love Island.

No. The principle should be in favour of goals. The fact the keeper isn’t getting there means even if the Dutch player was a 7ft fat bloke it shouldn’t matter.

The point was that you can easily see that the goalkeeper is out of balance and therefore he can't do anything to save it. He literally only sees the Netherlands player after the ball has flown in , the replay from behind is quite telling in terms of when he actually looks at him. The replay from behind makes it a more interesting situation to debate rather than the other clips that would indicate he was blocked from doing anything.

With the talent of the French team you’d expect them to score a goal in every single game they play in.

I keep hearing praises for the tournament so far for the amount of goals, but the standard of football has been woeful for me.

I hate the England team, manager and officials. In fact I hate everything about the UK. There is not a single redeeming thing about this miserable little island.

Top rant....from a Londoner. ;)

Reminds me of that Johnny English film when the French guy becomes King and tries to turn England into a massive prison before Rowan saves the day. Think he utterly "miserable little island" himself.

Maybe go and read the previous posts. You've misunderstood. Or don't...

The original post was slightly hyperbolic but not far off the mark.

You disagree and don't think the Netherlands has the best defense. It's fine people can disagree...

The fact that they're keeping a clean sheet against France though does suggest the defense is very good.

Clown commentating on RTE can’t tell the difference between Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids.

as bad a dutch team on the ball as i ever remember.

passing has been really poor, they've been up against it this second half but a lot of it is to do with their poor decisions and passes when theyve got the ball back.

Netherlands are in a bit of trouble because Austria are excellent. That said, even if they lose, with 4pts won’t they likely qualify as a best place 3rd place team?

Judging by the comments, some people don't understand the rule (just like the refs in charge).
There is no universe where Dumfries not being there would stop that ball going in. He didn't prevent any action from Maignan because it was a point blank rocket, absolutely no time to react.
