Day 8 | Slovakia vs Ukraine | Poland vs Austria | Netherlands vs France

First major officiating cock-up of the tournament. Of course Taylor is fecking involved.

That's not the first. Michael Oliver in Spain v Croatia too.
Of course, two English referees, the worst refs in the world and it's not close.

Europe, meet PL refs. The worst in UEFA by far. And somehow Taylor was chosen with the corrupt Michael Oliver. How was it this predictable that the first big controversy with officials would involve an English ref

He was stood right next the keeper, on the side he needed to dive, to be fair.

It's an easy decision to make for the referees. However, goalkeeper doesn't actually spot him until after the ball has already flown past him. Replay from behind just shows that he's not balanced after blocking the first shot

Also how the hell is one of the worse officials in the Premiership, Stuart Atwell getting any sort of gig internationally.

I never got behind the hype Marcus Thuram had at Gladbach and was shocked to see how well he played at Inter this season. This match reflects more on how he was Gladbach than he probably has been at Inter.

Less incentives for draws, or greater incentives for a win, to encourage teams to go for the win.

Another thing would be changing the offside rule to only being offside if no part of the attacker is onside. All of this high line and condensing the game into the middle of the pitch would lessen, I think.

There is a lot of things that could be trialled but the fact is people will instinctively hate it because anything radical means it becomes difficult if not impossible to compare football and football stats before and after.

Even if he’s not stopped the keeper from diving, the keeper doesn’t know if he needs to react to the player potentially helping on the other way.

Can’t the Dutch put Blind in midfield? They have feck all in terms of forward distribution there.

Agree with you. Unless you physically impede the keeper it should not be offside
The thing is, then you’ve got goals like Bruno’s against city last season being fine. He technically didn’t touch the ball, right? But he’s absolutely interfering

They don't quite have the zip in the play that Spain do imo. Still can change in next two weeks.

I think Spain have looked surprisingly good, but i reckon France are playing with the handbrakes and that they'll raise the level when they have to.

Commentators seem totally oblivious to the fact both teams would be happy with a draw

And you can bet the VAR chat was full of...

"Tayls, mate, just hang on a sec, we're checking."

"No problemo, Atts."

Those saying it's a fair offside

If that's the case that it's obvious, the second issue is how long it took to come to that decision from Atwell. It should have been done quickly, as we've seen other teams sort out.

It's no surprise the English refs make VAR into a farce

Harsh call, and not helpful for VAR's case, but I think it was the right call. And it was called offside in real time anyway.

ffs, the Dutch player should be running to get onside, rather than hanging around next to the keeper.

Can't see how it's even controversial. He's interfering with play, clearly.
A lot of people getting highly emotional because of the situation of the game, the guy is chilling next to keeper directly impeding any potential attempt at playing the ball. I can't believe the VAR official took that long to make the call tbh

So fecking poor from Dumfries. The fecker can't be fecked to run.

So much shite on show and a bullshit VAR decision killed it.

Correct offside decision for me. Can't have a player just hanging 5 yards offside beside the gk while the ball flies in on that very same side.
