Day 19: Brazil vs Mexico and Belgium vs Japan

Hoping Japan nicks this

Just seen the ref is from Senegal. Japanese will get nothing from him I'm guessing!

Utd could easily play this formation belgium play. Against the better teams you would play 3 cm pog matic fred with a top two of sanchez and lukaku.

Against probably everyone outside of the top 6 teams you'd drop matic or fred and bring in lingard in that sort of 10 role.

In both formations your width is supplied by the wingbacks.

My point is simple. I say Brazil is solid you come with Belgium or France. And I say to you Brazil has a better team reason why they are favourites. I mean if you think France or Belgium will have those big and long avenues of space Mbappé had vs Argentina then ok.
Who wrote this post then?

I don't want to make pointless predictions, but if Belgium cannot create trouble to Brazil in the QF (if they pass) I cannot see who will. Lets put it this way, to win major tournaments beside the individual quality you need to have a good defensive record.

Who can matchup with Brazil on individual quality from the teams left? Maybe France? Who is the only team who looks so defensively solid as them? Uruguay?

And who is the team who has these 2 qualities added together? None imo. But still 3 games to go, would be very suprised if they don't win this.

Basically they suffered a goal against Switzerland from a set piece, only Uruguay has suffered a single goal from setpiece.

Who is better than who is personal opinion so agree to disagree there.

I never know whether I want Belgium to do well. On the one hand they speak my language, but on the other hand they’re not a country they’re just part France part Netherlands.

Meh.

Japan are a very tidy side but they lack that extra bit of quality in attacking positions. They should have no chance of scoring against Belgium's defenders with crossed balls.

Would be cool if Japan pulled the upset here, but I'm leaning towards Belgium because they have a better chance of beating Brazil and their host of Oscar nominees.

Does Carrasco have any idea what he actually wants to do with the ball?

perfect bicycle kick opportunity. Rom could’ve become immortal there.

A stamp is with force. That wasn't.

How much force?
Quite true.

My original point though is that many Americans are brought up watching sports that put a premium on toughness.

Neymar is the antithesis of that.

I think I'd rather pretend to be hurt than pretend not to be and get brain damage.

Japan basically didn't play in the last 10 mins of their last game and just passed it around at the back. They did this to not get any fouls, They knocked Senegal out by having one fewer yellow card.

Lukakau has improved technically. He was so bad at his previous international tournaments with ball played to feet, was almost guaranteed to lose it or be rushed into a poor option. Much more confident and composed now.

Interesting that they trust this ref to be impartial.

These short corners combinations should be banned

Actually not a bad idea. "Corner kicks must be directed into the penalty area. Failure to do so results in an indirect free-kick to the opposing team."
