Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

Germany now defending the honour of the group of death.

Funny. I thought before the tournament that Germany won't even make the group. Anyway the winner of that match should go the finals. Other side looks terrible. Belgium going out 1st in their group and just having final pairing until the actual finals. Weird mode

So if I read the news right it's expected to be:

Sterling--------------Kane---------------Foden
-----------------Rice------Phillips--------
Shaw-Maguire-Stones-Walker-Trippier

Taking a step back from the tourney and just looking at it as a Prem team going into a cup game, I'd say it looks alright but obviously have to play on the counter and the lack of pace at wingback and the stress on Foden and Sterling to get on the ball and create will be a lot. Tough to see much creation out there.

Feels like a lot will come down to if Walker can avoid getting out of position as he is wont to do against clever movement which Germany should have. And if Kane can actually have some success coming deep to help create counter attacking possibilities.

Feels like a 2-1 loss kind of team to me, if I had to guess, but who the hell knows.

Anyone who said that 'winner of England vs. Germany match should go to final' clearly hadn't followed this tournament closely or just blinded by 'big name' nations and players. Denmark and Czech have been two of the most impressive teams thus far, with the likes of Maehle, Damsgaard, Soucek, and Schick outperforming some of the biggest stars. Heck, I wouldn't necessarily count out Sweden or Ukraine yet.

I feel like everyone's left are roughly on the same level now, it all comes down to tactical set-up and mental resilience. I'd favor Italy as a very slight favorite after that incredibly effective group stage dominance, but we saw how Austria gave them trouble. Anyway, love this tourney so far.

Well going by our previous games I'd say this is going to be a boring game or tactical which ever sounds better.
It will be like the Belgium vs Portugal game.
It will be won by 1 goal and I unfortunately think Germany will win, however much I wanted England to play great or even grind out a result against them I don't see it happening.
Kane will get slaughtered in the press just like Rooney used too,

So if I read the news right it's expected to be:

Sterling--------------Kane---------------Foden
-----------------Rice------Phillips--------
Shaw-Maguire-Stones-Walker-Trippier

I don't like the left side at all. I feel Germany will get beyond Sterling a lot and Shaw will be exposed leading to Maguire being dragged to where you don't want him. I would put Trippier on the left and I think it suits better to have a more attack minded James on the right where Walker is much more comfortable covering wide spaces and James overlapping the in-cutting Foden would cause a lot of problems I think.

The way I see it there are four big things for us to overcome today which are

The history of this fixture being massively against us

The pressure of playing in effectively a home tournament

Forgetting about being in the supposedly easiest part of the draw

Their wealth of experience at both club and international level

You neglected to mention Southgate and his negativity

If he's gonna play 5 at the back and 2 holding midfielders I don't get why you would you play foden? Should play rashford or saka, someone who will run into the space behind the german wing backs and run at the pedestrian back three. With that formation Kane can drop into a false 9 and we play on the counter direct with balls either straight in behind the wingbacks or into kane then out to wingers hopefully running behind.

Really looking forward for tonights game against Ukraine, if the leaked starting eleven is true we have a really exciting attack with Forsberg, kulusevski and Isak.

If we get past, the realist in me obviously says that we will lose against England or germany, however after the Swiss win last night nothing is impossible. Would be great to face denmark in the semifinals.

What a game for English ManUtd supporters. You lose, Sancho deal gets wrapped up. You win, you progress.

Going by Telegraph, this is the team. Shame Grealish is not starting, should have started instead of Foden.

Also interesting to see Southgate playing Trippier, thought James will keep his place.

I watched him for England the other day and he barely crossed the halfway line.

Have the CAF already started the pessimistic predictions? How many are we gonna lose by lads?

naa England can never lose against such a weak Germany! Its coming home 100%, easy win for the english. Germany too weak overall and not organized.

If this is the team again I want Germany to destroy England. Fecking Southgate.

I don’t like the team and I don’t really like talking about formations on paper but as it seems to be important to people I’d suggest putting Trippier and Shaw on the same row as Rice and Phillips because they’re not going to be anywhere near the back 3 for most of the game. That’s the entire point of the back 3.

All the talent England have and that’s the team Southgate chooses. I hope to god that’s a fake team but it very likely isn’t. You very rarely get anywhere in football with a coward and that team basically says “come and get at us”. How about instead of worrying about a frankly fairly average Germany side, we try and impose ourselves onto them?

such a bizarre stance.
Why? I wanne see an attacking side with all the talent they have, can't be bothered with that 5 at the back abomination with two holding midfielders and not playing your most threatening attack player. Let's not pretend they've been a joy to watch so far this tournament or even anything close to that.

Grealish must start.

I agree. Same as group stages but switch Mount for Grealish.

-------------------------------- Kane ----------------------------

Sterling ---------------- Grealish --------------- Foden

------------------ Rice ---------------- Phillips --------------

Shaw ---------- Maguire ------ Stones ------- Walker

Still disagree with certain selections, but you can't go tinkering at this point.

winning in the only thing that matters. don’t you think France would have preferred a scrappy deflected goal and win 1-0 that the couple of great strikers they had last night and go out.

I find it somewhat premature to be lambasting a manager before a ball has even been kicked.

Agree.

For all the plaudits that the goals that France scored, especially Pogba’s, it doesn’t matter. All people will remember is that Mbappe penalty miss & the Swiss getting through

If anything, Switzerland proved yesterday that you don't need to play negative football to win, they went at France and scored 3 times rather than defended with 10 men trying to keep them out (which wouldn't have worked).

I'm not interested in England winning, I wanna see a good game of football and Southgate will likely make sure that doesn't happen with that formation. Of course you have every right not to care if you just want England to win :D I'd be happy if he proves me wrong tonight!

Isn't it how Germany also line up? 5 at the back (or 3 however it is called), + 2 CMs.

If they play as boring as England I don't want them to go through either  They had the same formation against Portugal though, a 5-2-3 isn't necessarily a bad thing but how it's used by England is just too defensive imo.

It’s exactly how they play, which is why we are doing the same. It’s also a formation that we have used numerous times under Southgate, so it’s not new.
Changing your own system to accommodate the opposition isn't exactly a sign of confidence, especially for a team as talented as England. France played with a 4-3-3 against them and won (and yous beat Croatia with the same formation).

We'll see how it goes, happy to be proven wrong. Just disappointed that Grealish won't be playing tbh, he has surely done enough imo to be the first name on the sheet.

Doesn’t matter what he does, people will have a go.

I want to see Saka play.

But anyway if Southgate fails to get past round 2, he should leave. We cannot expect to win anything with a manager who so consistently fails to beat the first decent team he faces in any tournament. Lost to Belgium x2 in the WC, lost to Croatia, then qualified for the Nations League Semi Final and immediately lost to the Netherlands.

If he fails at the first hurdle, he has to go. Sick and tired of this. What kind of country celebrates failure?

He either has to show he can beat a good team, or leave. No point having him around if he can't beat good teams, especially with the squad at his disposal.

It's also how Belgium plays. Also formation won't tell whether the team is attacking or defensive. Atalanta plays 3 at the back formation and they are one of the most attacking team in Europe.

Formation doesn't matter. If England switch to 4-3-3, all of a sudden they won't be attacking team and very pleasing to watch team. They don't have good CMs and they are not well oiled machine like Spain who plays such a game that all their players are in sync, as that's how they are coached from younger days.

England are sort of unbalanced team, I think Germany will win the game. They will control the game and the way they attacked vs Portugal, it was hard to cope for most defenses.

Make no mistake, this is an absolutely massive game and our first real test in the tournament so far. On paper they look like a slightly better team but the route to the final will hopefully give the players all a little extra motivation. If we lose then I'm afraid it'll be hard to take and, let's face it, we're already miserable as shit. We really deserve something nice to happen after all the crap that's happened this past year.

I'm just hoping Emil bags a few for my FF team.

France changed their system and matched against Switzerland and it failed. Portugal went with a defensive line up and it didn't work. While we have looked ok defensively, we have hardly created many attacking chances. Playing 7 defensive players which its looking like isn't going to help.

Germany have Kimmich on the right side who normally players in midfield and they have a more attacking duo of Kroos and Gundogen in the middle. Rice and Phillips don't offer the same threat.
