Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

strikers should score every single decent chance.

should have, could have, would have.
I think England have done really well so far, they haven’t lit any fires but look solid, havnt conceded and got really dangerous players upfront whoever is chosen, I think they’ve got a great to chance to win it. No other team stands out as clear favourites.

You can't. Which is why you need to create opportunities. So when England had less shots on target than North Macedonia after 2 games, and came through a group they were expected to win comfortably with some of the worst attacking stats of any team in the tournament, despite having the best group of attackers in the tournament, questions need to be asked.
Yeah Mueller scores that 8/10 but this time around I don't think Southgate should be criticized.

As for their attacking performamces in the group - definitely and he rightly was.

to be honest that’s what I’ve been saying all along. we were one of half a dozen teams that could win it.

We have a chance, we have a good team, and have been solid. It’s really open.

Hes a dribbler. its what they do

Apart from when he showed he can pass and move for 1-0. I get what you're saying; he's there to take men on, commit them, beat them or perhaps draw a foul, not to spray it around like KDB, but he could play even better by making better decisions with the ball at his feet.

Tournament football result oriented. He brought the result. That's it. Debate should be ended there when he won it against one of favourites. If needed he will use the attacking talent. No need to go into details.

Chelsea won the champions League and did better when they changed manager.

Everyone would take their season over ours, most would probably expect as things are now, for them to finish higher than us next season. It should be very close.
Mentioned this yesterday, similar to france, that these managers are outthinking themselves and just not going with the best formation to get the best out of the players.

We saw how that played out in the first half for france yesterday
Southgate has bottled it.

See you next year lads!
Southgate is showing too much respect to Germany. This is a suicidal tactic.
I mean just imagine having the wealth of attacking options and not playing any of them
A back 7 home Vs a weak germany team. Southgate has to be the biggest pussy ever.
That England lineup is depressing.
Is that 7 defensive minded players selected?
Southgate is a gutless little worm.

So many clueless posts its staggering.

He got semi in the WC and is in a very good place for that or better this tournament.

Southgate deserves more respect. Got it spot on today

Germany weren't one of the favorites.

But he was wrong. We didn't win until Grealish came on. The idea of negativity was completely right.

He was scared of playing Grealish for some odd reason.

Nice words. You're an honourary Englishman in my eyes.

Also got knocked out of a tournament by Iceland...

Edit: Apparently that wasn't Southgate :nervous:

Grealish/Rashford/Sancho aren't better than Saka?

You're the clueless one

Not reading the whole thread, so apologies if I'm reiterating something posted earlier, but I'm ashamed of the continual booing of the German national anthem, and probably others, by England fans. It's honking, despicable, call it what you want, but I find it disgraceful.

Or they could over commit get done on the break and people call him a fraud anyway. Pragmatic football is sadly the most efficient in knockout football.
England absolutely don't have to play like turtles, they have the personnel and the quality to exasperate their opponents up until the final.

I think the minimum expectation for Southgate/England now is to reach the final. Even shit-housing it there won't matter if he gets to the final.

It wasn't until Southgate made the change every England fan in the country wanted to see from the off, that England gained any presence in that half. Up until then we had had 1 shot on goal, we hadn't get in behind the German line once and we scarcely got the ball to our CF at all. In the first half the best opportunity fell to Werner (thankfully)

There was absolutely nothing seen in that game that validates playing such a defensive line up. The moment England became less defensive, they took the game by the scruff and caused a predictably ponderous German defense issues. England has the best set of attacking players left in the competition. I hope Southgate has the courage to use them.

What utter Bollox. He got the luckiest run to the semis imaginable, including scraping past Columbia on pens.
So far he's played nothing but dull, mindnumbingly negative crap. And got lucky.

Agreed! The England manager role is like that, everyone thinks they know better. Have certainly seen a lot of nonsense written about England this tournament. He has got a lot right, especially with Kane, Maguire and Sterling, and his tactics for today's game were excellent. Using Grealish as a gamechanger is pretty smart too, though I think he will start the remaining games.

England are marginally ahead of Sweden in head-to-heads. The last few games have been more in England's favour, but there was a long period of draws against them and Sweden won't go into that game feeling like an underdog, imo.
I wouldn't blame them.

No, you have it wrong.

Some so-called fans don't seem to care about winning games, only about constantly attacking even when it doesn't make sense to do so. Brainless attacking dumps you out, just look at France yesterday.

All England fans should be delighted with a good win today.

Definitely. He'll have to open up a bit I think in the next round. He put in Grealish and surprise surprise it worked. I just think England lack cutting edge without Grealish, Sancho or 'the good' Rashford.

Unless Shaw plays like that!

Utterly nonsense. If Sterling misses his chance and Muller score his does that all of a sudden mean the tactics were wrong? If Ole puts 3 CBs up front against Peterborough in the FA Cup next season and we win 1-0 in added time with a freak own goal does that mean Ole got his tactics spot on. Have a think.

brave man to post that after they win.....they were shocking until Grealish came on and lucky not to have been losing so you're the only clueless one

Saka was our best player. The other two scored the goals. Their selection was justified in the end. As was Gareth's decision to make the substition.
For the first 20 minutes then he faded and did nothing after.

Maguire, Shaw, Grealish, Rice and Sterling were far better.

You can be both delighted with the win and still annoyed with Southgate for his dumb team selection at the same time.

It wasn't dumb though. It was well thought out, and it worked.

People moan about Saka/ Grealish but he was clear about why he picked Saka (his work off the ball) and yes it is partly a defensive thing, but Saka was a big part of the reason Gosens, one of Germany's biggest threats, did nothing in the game. Then we used Grealish as an impact player, which I am sure was also in his thoughts before the match. Even if you don't agree with it (I would have picked Grealish), I don't think you can just blindly call it 'dumb'.

I also expect Grealish to start the remaining games, and full of confidence too.
