Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

Different game entirely had Phillips or Rice got the red cards they deserved. Oh well, I wouldn't put it past Sweden or Ukraine knocking England (or for that matter, Germany) out.
Sweden are a very difficult opponent for England traditionally. Draw after draw after draw. Isak looks good and they play without hesitation. It's far from a forgone conclusion England get past them, but this is still the easiest route to the finals imaginable and there's no reason for England not to be aiming for that now.

What's absolutely bonkers is that England could put out a really threatening team who could take the game to the opposition and barnstorm their way to those finals, but for Southgate.

'Sterling deserves respect', 'England's best player' on the BBC. Sterling's general play has infuriated me for most of this tournament. Stop dallying on the ball and running into traffic, get your head up and pick out a pass, like you finally did with Kane to get your goal. He's scored the goals, won the ball back and had the balls to take on players, and I genuinely don't want to be the guy caning an England player when we've just booked our place in the QF but he can improve massively. I'm not buying the love-in on him just now.

That said...

a fine win. Germany were poor but we negated them to a large extent and provided the moments of quality that mattered. Shaw and Grealish are class, please please Gareth pair the feckers up for the next game. Magurie great, Stones fine, I liked Trippier today, Saka industrious, Walker not my cup of tea on the ball but his pace is a huge asset in a back five, Phillips busy and Rice much better second half (on a booking no less).

I don't think there has ever been a bigger gap then what the caf thinks about a player and the rest of football than Sterling

Evidently not :nervous:

England have not conceded a goal. As much as we moan about Southgate's tactics. At least, it has has that going for it.

Scotland have taken more points off of England than Croatia Germany and Czech Republic put together

Didn't England spank Sweden at the world cup?

Can't believe I thought this was on at 9 and just found out I missed it..

Blaming having the vaccine yesterday..

Take it game by game but very favourable run to the final now, and with France out, in terms of individual talent no other team is as good as the England team.

Just wish Southgate would start Grealish.

happy for Kane, he looks really unfit but at least he got the goal. England still a tough watch, but Germany were poor and didn't deserve anything from this.

Decent game by both teams. Disappointing result, unfortunate miss by Müller and disappointing ball losses by Gnabry.

At least Löw is gone now, but one tournament too late.

And i hope there never will be a stupid tournament format like this. All games should have been on neutral places.

They knocked out a big country with a poor team to be honest.

It's still a big team.

We are measuring the situation using England's POV.
They literally got knocked out last Euro by Iceland, whose manager was a part-time dentist and goalkeeper a part-time filmmaker.
Not even on penalties, they lost to Iceland in 90 minutes.

Understandable english fans are celebrating though

Oh Saka. Thrust. Deeper. Oohh ohh. Inside. Brilliant. Saka. Yes. Saka. Saka. I think Shaw made a good pass. Oooh Saka.
Friggin commentators

Sterling again the match winner yet nobody seems to rate him.

Kane celebrating his goal the way he did was w bit funny. You've just scored a tap in after spending all tournament being anonymous FFS

Fully deserved win. We nullified Germany and the Muller chance was our own doing aswell. The work done in the last 10 years at grass roots level by the like of Dan Ashworth is bearing fruit and will see us consistently make the latter stages in big tournaments IMO due to the production line.

I know Maguire has only played two games out of four, but I think he's in with a shout for best CB at the tournament.

And it goes without saying that Shaw is the same for LBs.

England should've conceded a goal though. You can't rely on top class strikers missing one on ones every game. The tactics were poor but we got the result, despite Southgates decisions, and not because of them.
