Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

Sweden are a very difficult opponent for England traditionally. Draw after draw after draw. Isak looks good and they play without hesitation. It's far from a forgone conclusion England get past them, but this is still the easiest route to the finals imaginable and there's no reason for England not to be aiming for that now.

What's absolutely bonkers is that England could put out a really threatening team who could take the game to the opposition and barnstorm their way to those finals, but for Southgate.

Or they could over commit get done on the break and people call him a fraud anyway. Pragmatic football is sadly the most efficient in knockout football.

Fully deserved win. We nullified Germany and the Muller chance was our own doing aswell. The work done in the last 10 years at grass roots level by the like of Dan Ashworth is bearing fruit and will see us consistently make the latter stages in big tournaments IMO due to the production line.
Plus Southgate seems a lucky manager somehow.

I know Maguire has only played two games out of four, but I think he's in with a shout for best CB at the tournament.

And it goes without saying that Shaw is the same for LBs.

He was brilliant today, to be fair all three at the back were great but when you consider the lay off Maguire was top class.

I am delighted for Luke. He is providing everyone wrong.

All sounds good until you see the manager.

Congrats, England, deserved win! Only three more World Cups and three more European Cups and we are even. ;)

I'm just relieved that I have never again to suffer a game under Löw. Feels like a victory to me. :)

England (not in the Common Market) 4-2 West Germany.... England (not in the EU) 2-0 Germany...

I’m not even English, mate

But i think this team has a different mentality this time, and it’s a positive one
Yeah team wise this is the best England team I've seen. Germany didn't really come up with anything dangerous other than Werner and Müller in each half. Maguire was huge imo.

Low should coach Nepal or Bhutan next. He has no place in elite football any more.

England should've conceded a goal though. You can't rely on top class strikers missing one on ones every game. The tactics were poor but we got the result, despite Southgates decisions, and not because of them.
You can't go all game without any chances conceded. Give him the credit man. He deserved. Beating germany in tournament after how long by england. Only god knows.

Martin Jørgensen put it correctly. The English bench has some of the best players in the world, but they won today so Southgate will stick to his guns and against someone like Sweden that will be a dangerous tactic.

Depends...England changed their tactics completely to snuffle out the German wing backs which they did. Against Croatia and Czech Republic the tactics were completely different.

Don’t think I’ve heard Maguire speck much before but he carries himself well.

Didn't England spank Sweden at the world cup?
England are marginally ahead of Sweden in head-to-heads. The last few games have been more in England's favour, but there was a long period of draws against them and Sweden won't go into that game feeling like an underdog, imo.

Well, they're all effectively dead now, right?
Absolutely. Tournament football at its best for this last 16. Plenty of unexpected happened. Only Italy and Spain escaped despite set backs in normal time.

I’m just glad we’re on the right side of the bracket, but it’s going to be tough if we come up against Denmark. I got a horrible feeling about that game if it is to happen. Something about the situation with Eriksen… it’s like rocket fuel for them.

You can't. Which is why you need to create opportunities. So when England had less shots on target than North Macedonia after 2 games, and came through a group they were expected to win comfortably with some of the worst attacking stats of any team in the tournament, despite having the best group of attackers in the tournament, questions need to be asked.

strikers should score every single decent chance.

should have, could have, would have.

'Sterling deserves respect', 'England's best player' on the BBC. Sterling's general play has infuriated me for most of this tournament. Stop dallying on the ball and running into traffic, get your head up and pick out a pass, like you finally did with Kane to get your goal. He's scored the goals, won the ball back and had the balls to take on players, and I genuinely don't want to be the guy caning an England player when we've just booked our place in the QF but he can improve massively. I'm not buying the love-in on him just now.

That said...

a fine win. Germany were poor but we negated them to a large extent and provided the moments of quality that mattered. Shaw and Grealish are class, please please Gareth pair the feckers up for the next game. Magurie great, Stones fine, I liked Trippier today, Saka industrious, Walker not my cup of tea on the ball but his pace is a huge asset in a back five, Phillips busy and Rice much better second half (on a booking no less).

Evidently not :nervous:
Hes a dribbler. its what they do
