Day 13: Costa Rica vs. England

The problems are endless but one of them is that Smalling and Jones are being massively held back by not playing regularly enough for their club in their favoured position. I appreciate they play for a big club so it's difficult but still.

Wilshere/Barkley are really the only positives. Why we are playing with Foster/Lampard/Milner in a dead game is so completely beyond me. What are we learning from them?

Forster should be playing, as should Sterling. Completely ridiculous from England's worst ever manager.

Forster will never be England's number one, or ever truly rival it, why shouldn't Foster play instead? Forster's just the usual over-hyped by Celtic fans so everyone begins to believe it, till they move down to England and get exposed.

See how Gary Hooper was apparently England's best striker when he was banging them in for Celtic.

Lampard should not have started every match. He's made a few good long balls today, it doesn't mean he should have played or that he's still got it.
He's a better holding midfielder than Gerrard or Henderson. We suddenly look less exposed with him in the team.

Just me that thinks we would probably still be better off playing Rooney as a 9 than Sturridge then?

Nope I'd agree when did Sturridge become better than Rooney ha ha wholly feck I love watching England

I just realized I have not received any likes yet. Heh.

Barkley is immensely talented but he has zero vision and passing skills. He's more of a Second Striker ala Kaka than a cultured attacking midfielder (Mata, Silva, Iniesta)

Great post. Barkley have surreal talent, but he's lack of vision keeps him back. He's on par with a Ronaldo/Messi in terms of raw abilities and raw talent. Barkley is 6'3 and Messi is around 5'6 1/2. Hopefully Barkley can progress in terms of vision. England is looking very very very good for Euros 2016 and World Cup 2018. England got the most young talent out of any squad currently playing at the World Cup. We just need to 'end' the older generation as soon as possible. England got the talent to win the upcoming Euros and the World Cup. We just need a manager with STEEL in his stomach. Someone that is willing to do what's right and ax that entire older generation.

You're basing this purely off 45mins against Costa Rica. Also, it would have been crazy to take Henderson out and replace him with Lampard.

What bothers me is that the players we started with during the Italy and Uruguay game weren't even that young. Wilshere, Lallana and Barkley are our most technically minded players, yet all three were left on the bench for Welbeck, Gerrard and Rooney.

Hodgson basically went for work horses and pace.

My only surprise was that he left Milner out.

Are you saying Wilshire Lallana and Barclay have more technical ability than Welbeck Rooney and Gerrard?

Man United fans saying Rooney isn't the problem, rest of England saying he is. What should an outsider believe?

It's the media who say he is. The same media are so far up Liverpools jacksie it's unbelievable. Gerrard and Sturridge can do no wrong.

Rigid shite. Play Sterling #10! No play Rooney! No Barkley he's the future!!!!!!

Like it matters at all. No team cohesion. No movement off the ball. No imagination. Hilariously bad
Good point tbf. Everyone is talking about the quality of the players, but as Costa Rica have shown it doesn't matter how good or bad the players as long as the tactics are spot on.

What the feck are you blathering on about? What does a player's height have to do with anything?

Well, who is actually suprised? This is the worst England team for as long as I can remember and the worst manager ever.

Rooney should be the centre of play as he is Englands best player. Lampard and Gerrard should not have been in the squad.

Good part is that I have won 300£ on Englands two first defeats.

He has a goal and an assist and could have scored more. Hes done more for England this world cup than anyone else. If you want to look for a problem in the team, start with Gerrard.

From the same guy that brought you this earlier today:

Lionel Messi is a very good player but I feel like he has been the product of the Barca system and his subpar performances at the World Cups have proven my theory correct. Cristiano Ronaldo had to carry the Manchester United squad on his back during his days here, Messi never had to carry any team. If you take out Ronaldo and Messi and pit the best possible Portugal team over the last 8 years against the best possible Argentina team over the last 8 years. Argentina will win 4-0.
Look at a player like Klose who have clearly outperformed Messi to a shocking degree but because he's not a 'media darling' he never got the hype of Messi and will go down as one of the great under rated players of our generation. I'm not saying that Messi isn't a very good player, I'm saying that he isn't a GREAT player. There is tiers to that.
Great Players(over the last 5 years) Ronaldo/Xavi/Iniesta
Very Good Players(over the last 5 Years) Messi/Suarez/Robben/Bastin/

Messi is able to elevate himself into that first tier because of the system. The Barca system is build for a small agile mover like Messi to excel in. He wouldn't do well at all in a Manchester or Liverpool system. The system of hard ball. He's just not big enough from a physical standpoint. But I hope he does well at this World Cup. I always root for the little guys!

Was nowhere near the ball. Awful touch and an even worse challenge. Could have seriously hurt the keeper

feck me, how did he score all those goals last season? He's wank.

Another miss from Sturridge - and he should have been booked for that challenge. Dreadful control. Must be Rooney's fault for not teaching him properly

Awful by Sturridge. Carried by Liverpool.

He wasn't, he just had a very good season and played very well.

Been awful for England though, but we see that with plenty of players who pull on the NT shirt.

Isn't Lampard supposed to be the holding midfielder? What is he doing standing on the penalty spot waiting for Lallana's cross?
