Day 13: Costa Rica vs. England

Wooo, a point. I knew things weren't going to be good but bloody hell, Roy exceeded my expectations. He really should be sacked.

With Woy, England are going backwards.

It's going to take years to offset what he will do to this team, atleast we got rid of Moyes when we knew!!

I wouldn't say England are going backwards, just standing still as always. It seems like England always have a few good players around the team but they are never set up to get the best out of them, the team is never balanced and there is always a couple of players who get into the squad who really shouldn't be there.

lol, England are pathetic.. When are the FA going to stop giving the job to prehistoric idiots with no tactical knowledge?

Amazing the bull Hodgson comes out with: "we showed today what a good team we can be."

Woy thinks England were great today...urm sorry but they weren't that good :wenger::lol:

Thought we had some flashes but clear lack of cutting edge. Thought Wilshere did well enough thoght to suggest he might have been worth some more game time and with his ability to push on with more emphasis than Hendo might have been a better option over Gerrard though unlikely to ever happen. Plus always hard to tell in games like this as Costa Rica knew they just needed a draw to top the group and probably wouldn't be fussed if they finished second anyway.

I still don't get it, is Costa Rica that good? I mean, now that the 1/8 are around the corner, we'll finally see if they're THAT good

about England: ugh, nothing else to say, if the wanna keep Hogdson on board, well that's too bad, Euro 16 = next failure

He's taking the biscuit. We were very average against a side that offered absolutely nothing all game.

Well, Costa Rica will probably go vs Ivory Coast, and I think they're more likely to go through at this time.

 England!

You are not going to progress unless you sack Hodgson and not keep hiring dinosaur tactic managers.

Only saw second half but thought it was an improvement in a lot of areas.
Costa Rica weren't exactly ambitious though so it wasn't a great test imo.

Defence looked a hell of a lot more solid and midfield looked functional which is a pretty big improvement.
I'd be dissapointed in the attacking players though.

Jones and Milner on the right looked pretty poor going forward. Did CR have some great left winger or something?
Solid defensively though, Jones did a good job cleaning up.
Milner was very good for dropping into midfield and keeping things tight if someone got caught up the pitch.

Lallana and shaw looked really good on the left, i was surprised when lallana came off, especially considering the performances of some others.
Pair of them looked the only real threat.
Shaw had some really good tackles and interceptions thrown in there, looks like a very clever and mature player for his age, he impressed me.

Smalling looks good defensively as usual. Passing was the usual terrible standard though, if he fixes that he'd be a pretty classic cb imo though.
Lampard looked pretty decent in the holding role, which surprised me. Guess i shouldn't be. Wilshire was anonymous and barkley was terrible imo.

I've seen very little of barkley really but i dont get the hype from what i have seen.
Just runs into cul de sac's. He seems to actually go out of his way to find cul de sacs.
Just wasteful with the ball mostly. Haven't seen enough of him for it to be a fair judgement i guess.

Sturridge was pretty terrible, just wasn't his day again i guess. Just terrible first touches and wasteful with good opportunites. Dont think hes a bad player but it was a bad performance.

Nothing will be addressed. Nothing will change.

How did it come to this? I know this was decades in the making but it wasn't that long ago that England were feared. Or was it?

The footballing world is changing. England is an established, well known name in world football. But, truth be told, I think they are getting farther and farther from major tournament results while some teams that have very little reputation are making huge strides forward. As has been typical for England since I have been able to follow them over the past 25 years, they have demonstrated consistency only in their failures. They are always a step behind play, look slow and lethargic, are technically lacking and show no confidence or enjoyment in their play. The tactics, due to relatively poor coaching, never seems correct, and they do not know how to manage a football match. Simple passes go wrong as often as not, and they show naivety at defense. And pray for the three lions if a match ever goes to penalties. Compare this with the likes of Costa Rica and Chile, just to name two, who are quick, aggressive, tactically astute for each match and show a desire and determination married with skill and belief, and you see why I think England are in for continued despair. This world cup will be known as much for the emergence of new teams on the world stage who have shown that the old, typical giants of the game might be finding some new competition on an increasingly crowded stage.

Why did Rooney come on to play on the left when Sturridge had such a poor game? There's no way in hell that Sturridge is better than Rooney as a #9 in a 4-3-3, absolutely no way.

Pretty accurate actually.

All of the below have to be tempered with the thought we (and probably the players too) have no idea what Owlface's tactics were.

Foster - 7 - solid all game
Shaw - 6.5 - decent start but disappeared for spells
Smalling - 6.5 - solid enough, passing dodgy
Cahill - 7 - solid but to be honest CR didn't pose much threat for most of the game
Jones - 6.5 - good in defence but offers nothing over the halfway line
Lampard - 6 - he is not a DM and it showed though TBF he hardly needed to be in this match. Was better going forward but generally didn't actually offer much.
Wilshere - 7 - I'm not a fan but I was surprised when he was pulled and not Barkley as he was combative, regularly won possession back and posed an attacking threat - everything Barkley did not.
Barkley - 5 - see Wilshere
Lallana - 6 - I've seen him play much better, it didn't surprise me when he came off since his Yellow came from the only bad tackle of the match.
Milner - 5.5 - Offensively offered nothing, I don't think he got past his man once, defensively was always supportive.
Sturridge - 5 - offday. Missed a couple of excellent chances and passes went astray
