Day 13: Costa Rica vs. England

It's weird that Hodgson is treating this like a ceremonial match to give some seniors a last hurrah. This should have been an opportunity for the younger players to get more experience at a major tournament.

He's just a bad bad bell.

It's Hodgson. Much more important for him to be a nice man than actually try and achieve anything.

What young players would you have played in this game that Roy hasn't?

Sterling, Chamberlain, Welbeck.

Chamberlain is injured. Sterling and Welbeck do not need a third game in a dead rubber to help their England career.

You said Roy was "giving some seniors a last hurrah" but there's only 1 player that applies to (Lampard) and there are no young players in the squad that could play in his position that haven't already stunk up the place in the first two games.

It was bad of Gerrard to shoot every time he got the ball against Chelsea. Sturridge does that every game.

I love how scousers will argue that Sturridge isn't actually Jermain Defoe reincarnate.

Why would you try and dribble your way out of the England box Barkley?

oh sturridge, nice try but the overlap was on

Edit. It was milner. right choice to ignore him
NO. I wondered about it in first two games but now am sure: problem up front wasnt Wayn it was Sturridge. It's fine saying a forward's instinct is to shoot BUT twice in the opening 15 sturridge shot when he could have rolled someone else in. Poor. Instinct can only be praised if this sort of wrooy is proved wrong by the shot being on target. I wonder if it is this Jose sees and didn't like about Sturridge. My feeling is Wayne at "number nine" and we might have been in witha chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. Sturridge = unimpressive and some learning to do...

They were both poor, but I thought Welbeck was far worse than sturridge in both games

No way. Welbeck was up there as one of our best players against Italy and against Uruguay he did what Sturridge will never learn, play a key part in a team.

All Sturridge knows how to do is shoot. He wastes so many opportunities it's ridiculous but then one will go in and everyone starts stroking themselves.

It's fairly obvious fat Frank will never play for England again so why the hell is he playing?

Sturridge hits a shot way off target

Andy Townsend "Not a bad attempt that from Sturridge just a wee bit to left and it would of been a goal, at least he's taking chances"

Rooney hits a shot just missing the target by an inch

Andy Townsend "Sloppy play that from Wayne, he should of passed it instead"
