Day 13: Costa Rica vs. England

Is Wilshere playing on the right or is it Milner? I think I'd actually prefer it if Wilshere was on the right and Milner in CM

How soon after this do the England players return?

Does anybody believe what Harry Redknapp is spouting, about player not wanting to play for England and asking him to get them out of it.

I certainly do.

I also believe that United have stopped our players reporting for international duty before.

He's opened a can of worms now hasn't he. Now every Spurs players under his tenure is being suspected of it. The best way to stop it is if someone is injured, unless genuine, then make sure they don't play for a month after. Club wouldn't dare withdraw players for nothing then.

Every Spurs player? He specifically mentioned England.

So its Dawson, Lennon, King or Defoe? Huddleston maybe?

"If I was a selfish person, I'd stay on" (to beat Beckham's outfield cap record)

Confirmation Gerrard won't be retiring then.

He sure has, I am not sure what to think, like you said it must be Spuds players.
I dont think any United player has been stopped from joining the England squad.

Plenty of times Rio would miss a mid week England friendly but be fit for the weekend. And as for Giggs and Wales.....

I do. I can't imagine players not wanting a World Cup call up, but friendlies I could definitely imagine.
I seem to remember him saying something like this a couple of years ago too, possibly while he was at Tottenham even.

Would have been even better had he not been in the squad in the first place.

He already had his fun day in the friendlies before the WC.

I don't really get why we took him? He is only playing in this game as a farewell. Would have been better to have taken a younger player. Still hindsight eh.

If Gerrard got injured I would think Roy wanted another older player to take his place.

There's not exactly a queue of great centre mids to pick from.

Be nice for Lampard to get a goal on his final game and an England win would be something for the travelling fans to cheer about.

Agreed. One of the players that I respect most outside of United. Also, I'd rather see him trying to score than watch either one of Gerrard or Henderson bottling it in the middle.

Edit: mentioned it earlier
I don't really mind him playing Lampard. He's just giving him a chance to play for England one last time. I also can't think of any other candidates that would make that much of a difference in midfield. Gerrard? Jones? Henderson? Not really the crème de la crème.

Should have been an older player who could play the holding role. Like Barry or Carrick.

Smalling is so horrible on the ball. That won't please van Gaal one bit.

Has Wilshere ever gone through a match of football without at some point injuring himself?

It's weird that Hodgson is treating this like a ceremonial match to give some seniors a last hurrah. This should have been an opportunity for the younger players to get more experience at a major tournament.

He's just a bad bad bell.
