David Villa | Monday 'defining day' for Spurs: Villa signs for Atletico Madrid

There are rumors around of David Villa moving to Arsenal. I got this off reddit.

Quim Domènech Puigbó, a respected Barcelona source (who broke Valdes' contract amongst others) said last night on Spanish TV (https://twitter.com/PUNTOPELOTA) that David Villa has spoken to Arsene Wenger over the phone, and also Santi Cazorla, and he wants to join Arsenal. FCB want to hold onto him, but Villa wants to leave asap. He thinks its likely he will join Arsenal in the summer, but Villa is pushing for a move in January. Arsenal are the club that most interests Villa.

You can see an English translational he has RT on that page.

I can't find a rehash of this story in the English media, (which goes to show how terrible they are really) but this is a genuine 'development' that was broke last night around 2am.

Would be a good move for Villa and Arsenal. But I can't see it happening right now. Arsenal as usual have left it too late IMO.

We dont really know that though KM. For all we know, the deal could be in its final stages without the media knowing about it. Talking in general though, not in this case because Unless he's willing to take a massive paycut, it wont happen.

Well let's wait till tonight then. If Villa is in Barcelona's squad then the deal's off IMO.

I've seen Wenger and Mancini say not interested I thought? Or at least Wenger said not in this window.

means nothing really. Could have been at the time of asking they werent interested but things change quickly. Theres been a lot of smoke lately with Villa leaving Barca so not surprising to see it continue - like KM said be interesting to see if hes in the squad for todays Clasico

I don't think many top players leave clubs at this stage of the window, unless Barca feel they have enough cover for him with the players they have.

Wenger played down the prospect of a permanent move and would not confirm an interest in Spain striker David Villa, saying only that Barcelona do not wish to sell.

Wenger, who is happy with his forward options, added: "It doesn't go away, but Barcelona doesn't want to sell David Villa. They have made that very, very clear."

"As numbers we have enough. We have plenty of quality strikers."

Wenger does not believe there is room to negotiate with Barcelona.

"You respect the desire (to keep a player)," he said. "If I say that somebody is not for transfer I expect the other clubs not to try to buy him."

A bit of a dig at the Cesc transfer sage.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has opened talks with Barcelona striker David Villa, writes John Cross.

Villa-Boas is desperate to sign Villa, and is hoping his personal relationship will help win the battle to snatch the Spain international.

We revealed on May 9 that Spurs had reignited their interest in want-away Villa, who will be allowed to leave Barca in search of more regular football in what is a World Cup year.

The 31-year-old has also been targeted by Arsenal and Liverpool in the past, but Spurs are hoping to persuade him to come to White Hart Lane - even though they did not qualify for the Champions League.

Barcelona will give the green light to a deal if anyone matches their £12m valuation and are allowing him to negotiate a move.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to bankroll the club's pursuit of Champions League next football by signing TWO big-name strikers this summer.

They tried for Leandro Damiao in January, but could not get the Brazil international out of his club, Internacional.

Tottenham have gone back for Damiao, and he and Villa are their first choice to spearhead a rebuilding programme this summer.

They are also keeping tabs on Valencia's Roberto Soldado and Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic, in case they miss out on other targets.

Juventus would want around £12m for 29-year-old Vucinic, but his age would count against him as Villas-Boas has already had a big battle to convince Levy over Villa.

That would be an excellent signing if Spurs do manage to pull it off. Although Villa is in decline, he could easily fire them to a top four spot if he managed to stay fit.

Would be a smart move for Spurs. Bale's brilliance has covered up the fact they've gone the whole season with just Adebayor and Defoe as senior strikers. He'll get plenty of chances in their team and you know he'll finish them.

Good signing. Another chance for Football manager to over-rate Spurs and have them as title challengers.

Spurs are closing in on the Barcelona striker after he reached a broad agreement on personal terms, with both clubs now negotiating a transfer fee to secure the deal

EXCLUSIVE By Greg Stobart in Rio de Janeiro

Tottenham are closing in on a deal to sign David Villa after the Barcelona star confirmed he would like to move to White Hart Lane during talks with the player and his representatives, Goal has learned.

The Spain striker has reached a broad agreement on personal terms to move to Spurs this summer and is eager to play in the Premier League.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has spoken informally to Villa on the phone while the club's new technical director, Franco Baldini, has held productive discussions with the 31-year-old's agent.

Spurs officials are understood to have been in Brazil last week, where they held talks over a deal for Villa - who is in the country for the Confederations Cup - while also reaching an agreement on a £17 million deal to sign Paulinho from Corinthians.
The Londoners believe that they are in a strong position to land Villa despite reported interest from Fiorentina but they hope to convince Barca to lower their £12m asking price.

Tottenham are ready to pay around £8m for Spain's all-time leading scorer, who has just one year left on his contract at Camp Nou and, due to his age, has little sell-on value.

Villa himself has said that he will decide on his future after the Confederations Cup, where Spain have booked a place in Sunday's final against hosts Brazil at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Spurs are willing to pay the attacker more than £100,000-a-week but the former Valencia man is understood to have accepted that he must take a reduction on his £140,000 weekly salary at Barcelona.

Villa-Boas has made Villa his top final-third target for the summer transfer window as he looks to boost the club's forward line and improve Spurs' chances of a top-four finish next season.

Spurs tried to rival Arsenal for the Spaniard's signature in the January transfer window but Barcelona refused to sell the forward midway through the season.

The Gunners have dropped their interest in Villa while Barcelona are now prepared to sell the striker, who would find his opportunities further limited next season following the arrival of Neymar at the Liga giants.

Tottenham are looking to conduct their major transfer business early this year and have agreed a deal of £15m plus £2m in add-ons to sign Paulinho.

The 24-year-old is expected to sign an initial four-year contract and undergo a medical after the Confederations Cup final on Sunday, having scored the late winner in Brazil's semi-final win over Uruguay on Wednesday.

Spurs have become very good at this transfer stuff. If Villa was to arrive and they're able to keep Bale then they'd potentially have a team of;

Bale - Villa - Lennon
Dembele - Paulinho - Sandro
BAE - Vertonghen - Dawson - Walker
Lloris

And most of the players are still approaching their peak years.

Erm, goal.com Glaston?

Well, yes. But on the other hand it's a detailed article ... and from someone who actually is in Rio currently. So I'd give it more credence than usual.

How would you feel about that potential signing, Glaston?

I'd be delighted! Add in Villa, with Bale staying, and our front three starts to look a lot more potent goals-wise. And who knows, maybe Damiao could be the 3rd.

Dembele-Paulinho-Sandro looks a good midfield on paper, comfortably better than ours at the moment. Bale will stay for this season. I dunno, with Arsenal seemingly strengthening and Chelsea getting Mourinho, I can't see how Spurs will break the top 4 even with that team.

That would be a good bit of business if they can get him.May turn out to be their talisman like RVP.

Not sure about this one.

Looks good on paper but he doesn't look the player he was. Natural finisher but you need pace in the PL to really trouble defences. Would be interesting to see what he'd do in the PL and worth a punt for Spurs I suppose. Hopefully for them he won't be a Shevchenko arriving after his sell by date.

Villa is still quick enough to hack it against most premier league defences.

If he is used as a poacher type striker he will not need massive outright pace anyway, just decent acceleration.

Villa 5 years ago would have been a dream signing. Not now.

Only 3-4 years ago he was the best striker on planet. Now he isn't near that level but still he is a good player and a massive upgrade on everything Spurs have. In fact, I think that he'll be one of the best strikers in EPL next season if he goes there.

He is still good enough, his pace is gone but he is a clever striker his experince counts for a lot a great two footed finisher also. Now Tottenham need a lb and need to look at a few bench option actually hold on.... Defoe, Adebayor, Holtby, Dempsey, Sirgudsson, Assou Ekotto, Dwason, Friedel not too shabby at all. On paper.

Wouldnt be surprised if hes still one of the very top strikers in the world, just not in Barcelona's system with a "Messi striker" because he's not Messi. He's the exact opposite wanting to run behind the defence, not pick up the ball deep and dribble through it. So its easy to see why on the few occasions Villa has been picked as a striker for Barcelona it hasnt worked out. Think its madness that he's not starting up front for Spain though and if he does go to Spurs I think he'd be more than they are looking for to take them up a couple of levels.

He's not Defoe or Adebayor. I'll be very happy with this if it goes through.

How Monday could be a defining day for Tottenham
06 Jul 2013 14:09:59
By Alex Beck

"Brazilian midfield powerhouse Paulinho has signed, and it is reported that David Villa might not be far behind him. The Spaniard is extremely keen to join AVB’s Spurs and it is just the fee left to agree between the Lilywhites and Barca. Under Armour, Tottenham’s kit manufacturer, have also announced the date of kit release; it is on Monday (the 8th July).

The 24 year-old box-to-box midfielder stated in a tearful press conference earlier in the week that he had decided to leave Corinthians to play a higher quality of football at White Hart Lane, and he arrived in London yesterday morning for a medical. It is expected that he will sign a contract at Tottenham before leaving for a brief holiday, before linking up with the squad for pre-season. The general consensus is that the North London club are waiting until Monday to announce the transfer, to tie-in with kit release, in the hope that many people will be inspired to buy a ‘Paulinho 8’ shirt.

The 31 year-old Spanish forward visited Tottenham’s newly refurbished, state of the art training facilities at Hotspur Way earlier this year and was blown away by what he saw. At some point in the last month, he decided that Tottenham Hotspur would be the best place for him to further his footballing career. However, the clubs are still negotiating the finer details of the fee, and so the deal is not yet finalised in its entirety. There is still a positive feeling at Spurs that they will get their man, and the ideal situation would be that they announce it on Monday. Creating a hype around new signings and kit release could encourage many fans to purchase a shirt, with either Paulinho or Villa on the back.
So with the two transfers extremely close to completion – if not already complete – then Monday 8th July could become a defining day in the season of Tottenham Hotspur. By close of play Monday, they could have two new signings and a new kit to play with for the new season. There are even growing rumours that Gareth Bale may announce a contract renewal next week. The future is looking bright at White Hart Lane."

It's looking good ...

Would be huge for spurs if they can get a player of his stature and ability.
