David Villa | Monday 'defining day' for Spurs: Villa signs for Atletico Madrid

I'm the first to take the piss when narrow markets/no value are tossed about but villa was never going to come to england when the biggest clubs spain wanted him. For us to be in the villa market, we would've had to move the club to spain.

Its still looks pretty good value for Barcelona.

Problem for Barca is what to do with Ibra. Combined with how good Pedro may be next season, he's going to have to play people out of there favoured positions.

Unless Guardiolla sticks with Ibra upfront. Villa looked fecking frightning coming in from the left against Portugal, maybe this is where he will be playing next season.

Is Villa currently the best striker in the world? I think so.

The problem with Villa wide left, as with Rooney, is its easy to predict what he's going to do with the ball. And while both of them can go left and try and cross with their left foot at the byline, its rarely going to be brilliant delivery. So you show them wide and make them work hard, to cross the ball. Just dont let them come inside onto their right foot.

He was the best, but then on last season's form Rooney was better due to his deadlyness with his head too. But on current form, with Rooney being off it, yes he's definitely the best.

Has to be surely, I've had him in my fantasy football team, and he just keeps fecking scoring, just like he did in the Euro championships. He's made Torres look like an idiot, quite frankly, or maybe he did that himself.

Yeh, this is the problem. Villa would scare the shit out of defenders week in week out, playing on the left, and do a better job than, say, Henry did for them. But looking at the post above, why would you sacrafice playing one of(if not the) best striker(s) in the world in his deadliest position to accomodate a lazy Swede?

Yes. On balance he's been the best striker around since the RVN, Theirry Henry batch began to decline. He's been extraordinary in the last two major international tournaments, he's only dipped below the 1 goal every 2 games mark in 1 of his 5 seasons at Valencia, and he's contributed alot of assists. Torres, Rooney, Drogba might be as good as him at their best, but Villa stands alone in terms of his consistency over the past several years.

I used to think the world of him, but nowadays I'm no longer sure about that. Why has a player like him spent the best part of his career at minor clubs with hardly any chance to win major profis? He does lack the greed for trophies and a winning mentality.

Aye he has. His record both domestically and internationally is testament to that. Throw in the quality of many of his goals, and the overall standard of his play with the ball at his feet, and he has no peers.

He wasnt better than Rooney last season, so nope not for the past 2 or 3 years. Before that he was the best, and based on the fact Rooney's gone off the boil, he's once again the best at this particular time.

But even though I'm a big fan of his, he's never been as good as Rooney was when he was in form in the season, due to the fact Rooney was dynamite in the air. Not just improved and good in the air, but he was actually scoring headers only the best headers of a football would score. In pretty much every other department its close between them, but Villa is not a nightmare to deal with in the air. He's just good in the air, but can be dominated in the air because of his size and no great leap. So Rooney simply went well ahead due to his hard work improving in the air.

Well Villa wasn't better than Forlan in 2008/09 either. But throw in that consistent level of performance over a number of years - the fact he's been in the top 5 strikers each year - and it's his consistency which sets him apart.

His international record is outstanding - the first striker since Ronaldo in 1998 and 1999 to dominate in two consecutive tournaments.

Actually he was better than Forlan in 08/09 even though he didnt score as many. He played his best football for a long time and along with Mata, carried a pretty disgraceful at times, Valencia team. And he was still playing international games over the course of the season, continuing to score a goal a game.

And his international record is better than that. He's not just about to beat Raul's record in 3 more goals, but he's about to make Raul look shit in doing it in under 2/3 of the appearances. In fact its not just Raul he's about to make look shit, but every other Spanish striker in history.

In fact, I think if Rooney's international record read as 42 goals in 62 matches, a large amount of the posters on here would be suggesting Wayne Rooney is our best ever player. David Villa's international record is better than a goal every 1 and a half games.

I mentioned it in another thread last season, but he should really be figuring more prominently in BPITW discussions. Messi's probably correctly out on his own at the minute, but Villa bears comparison with Ronaldo, Xavi and anyone else out there.

what's more scary is that barca has without question 4 out of the top 7-8 players in the world. 50% of the BPITW candidates in your team is frightening.

You mean like Robben and his complete playing style?
No matter how predictable it is doesn't mean you can stop him/them.

If they are amazing dribblers, perhaps. Its the same with Messi, always wants to come inside but has the ability to choose to go outside and then cut in from there before you can recover to stop him.

Dribbling isnt one of David Villa's top skills. He has his moments like his goal in the world cup, but I've seen him fail many a time when one on one with the last man where he should have done better. And when you know he's coming inside you can absolutely stop him by taking the right position. This leaves you weaker to his outside/left but if he goes that way you can recover and if pressure is applied to him when he's crossing from there, he's rarely going to put real quality into the box. He's got a great left foot but he's not like Ribery or Nani who still have a diverse supply of techniques to cross the ball with even with their left feet, able to stand the ball up to the back post. Villa puts it low across the box and a correctly positioned CB will deal with it.

News; Barcelona prepared to sell David Villa to Chelsea or Manchester City to fund transfers - News - MirrorFootball.co.uk

Barcelona are preparing to offer David Villa to Manchester City and Chelsea for £40million.

The Catalan giants have *reluctantly accepted that they will have to *sacrifice their World Cup-winning striker to help fund a £91m triple summer swoop for Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, Udinese winger *Alexis Sanchez and Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi.

Barca boss Pep Guardiola has been restricted to a £40m transfer budget as the La Liga and Champions League winners set about slashing their £350m debt.

And Nou Camp president Sandro Rosell has made it clear to his *manager that further money for *signings must be generated through sales.

Villa, 29, joined Barca only 13 months ago in a £35m switch from Valencia and notched 23 goals for Guardiola’s team last season.

He is also Spain’s all-time record scorer with 46 goals in 72 international appearances.

A source revealed: “Guardiola has a list of players he is *prepared to move on to give him more spending power in the transfer market, but Villa is definitely not on that list.

“Ideally, he wants to keep Villa – especially after the impact he made in his first campaign with Barca. He sees David as a big player as his side push for more trophies next season.

“But he also knows that he may have to sacrifice Villa to finance incoming deals. And Manchester City and Chelsea would be very happy to buy Villa.”

Rosell has told the Gunners that he won’t pay more than £35m for Fabregas, while a £2.7m-a-season deal with the £30m-rated Sanchez – who is also being chased by Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus and Inter Milan – has already been agreed.

Rossi is close to completing a £26m switch, and his agent Federico Pastorello confirmed: “His dream is to certainly wear the Barcelona shirt and with official negotiation I believe a deal can be done.”

Barca’s Spanish international c*entre-back Gerard Pique, who played alongside Rossi when they were youngsters together at Old Trafford, said: “Giuseppe has so much talent, good control and is very fast.

“He fits neatly into Barcelona as both a man and a player.”

They won't get Fabregas for £35million or less, they can afford Rossi, so it would come done to wether they'd rather Villa or Sanchez if thats to be believed.

wonder if we'll show interest since fergie was very keen on him last summer.

he's the plyer that saf talked about when he said we had very real interest in a big target but he didn't want to leave his country.

I doubt Barcelona are seriously considering selling him, would be a massive risk, especially if they think they'll get Fabregas for under £35million as being a reason to sell him.

Would be strange to use him in a deal for Fabregas considering their midfield is their strongest area and it would leave them a striker short, or even two strikers short if Bojan leaves.
