David Villa | Monday 'defining day' for Spurs: Villa signs for Atletico Madrid

Shame about that, would've loved to have seen him in the Premier League.

Spurs probably should've made a move for Gomez when he was available and now I'd imagine they'll go after Benteke and I really hope Villa give Spurs a taste of their own medicince and fleece them mercilessly.

Cracking thread title.

I really wish him well. Had a nasty injury and never got a chance after that. 5m is a summer bargain really.

He must be on ridiculous wages for Barca to agree to something as bizarre as that. It's not just the overall amount but how 2/3 is contingent on him staying at Atlético (alternatively they get 50% of whatever Atlético agree with a third party).

Spurs obviously would have been willing to offer better terms to Barca so the only reading is Villa wouldn't go there.

Wonder what Bale is thinking...

Yep, has to be on very high wages but thats to be expected. Barca pay top dollar wages for the players they sign from other clubs. Its the La Masia products that are on low wages.

He's 31 and although he did well to come back from the leg break this season and played very well, you still wonder how much he has left in the tank.

Also, the big price is in his wages. Comfortably their highest earner now.

Perez has just congratulated Atletico on the lovely gift Barcelona has given them.

5.1m with potentially being even lower is a bargain for Atletico. Poor Spurs, they should have got him, missing again in a striker.

I didn't even know Atletico wanted him. Excellent stealth transfer work by them.

At times like this I do admit to a certain satisfaction thinking about Daniel Levy getting the rug pulled from under him

Well in Athletico

Everyone knew they were after a striker to replace Falcao. City's interest in Negredo made that out of bounds. The other option bandied about was Suárez.

Go on Spurs, Arsenal aren't serious, just get him and make it even more funny that he will move to a non-CL English club :D

It's not exactly a great loss. He's past his best and Spurs may be looking at signing a better striker from somewhere rather than a guy who will be on 100k+ a week who may only have 1 or 2 good seasons left.

Great signing. Dont know why Valencia werent in for him... Was always a bit unlikely that Villa would leave Spain as he ruled it out in the past.

Atletico really know how to replace their strikers. Replaced Aguero and Forlan with Falcao, now replacing Falcao with another proven great player in Villa.

Good replacement for Falcao. David Villa will probably be their main striker and being able to play in the CL rather than the Europa League was an attraction too. How much did Spurs bid for Villa? Were they low balling again?

Couldnt have been lower than 5mil. Even that 5mil has clauses and the fee upfront is 2mil odd.

Either he didnt want to move to Spurs or his wage demands were too high.

We were never in for him seriously. Apart from this January when I think Wenger tried to steal him while Barca were looking the other way.

Hunter reckons UCL factor played a part in Villa staying in La Liga and going to A.Madrid. Quite obvious I must say. He'll get plenty of minutes. Last chance to stake a claim for starting role in WC squad.

Yes please.

Chelsea latest to be linked to Benteke. Goal.com poll has majority saying he wouldnt be a good signing for them, clueless :D

I like him a lot and he's PL proven. He's got to be on silly money though.
Well, it wouldn't be Rooney silly money, surely.

I'd take a gamble & guess its between £75,000 - £100,000 per week. He was probably on like £30,000 at Wolfsburg, if not less! Maybe City can sponsor you a Adebayor like loan with Dzeko ;)
