David Moyes - The Tactician

Does anybody feels we play a 4-1-4-1 formulation recently ? Jones links up defence and midfield and Rooney plays in midfield alongside Cleverley.

Yes! I definitely noticed this yesterday at OT more than before. It's a very interesting set up. Jones almost acts as a sweeper for a midfield 4 and it allows Rooney or Cleverly to push up on either side of the lead striker. Not seen a 4-1-4-1 for a while, but looking forward to seeing if it can tear teams apart.

I don't see why he would be satisfied with it when he said this in October: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/oct/09/wayne-rooney-reasons-leave-manchester-united
Moyes is using him no different to how Fergie did when he played him in midfield. It's clearly best for the team but will Rooney be any more accepting of it?

I think Rooney was mainly pissed off at Fergie not signing midfielders and putting all the pressure on him. Moyes has made his intentions clear with strengthen that area. Im sure Rooney is willing as long as its a temporary measure

Ha I've just remembered it was only last week he was going on about how many times we'd gotten to the by-line wasn't it. He must have been really encouraged by that.

Appalling. The only ones that were really threatening were the low drilled ones by Evra. Why swing high crosses in to Rooney who is about 5'9" and RvP who isn't exactly the best in the air..

Percentage football can be effective, but only when you play to your own strengths and the odds favour you.

It's incredible. I thought we were seeing some improvements, but it's all going to shit. I can't recall having seen a team so consistently let in the first goal (regardless of who controls the start of the game), and such one-dimensional play going forward... and Moyes seems genuinely perplexed as to why things aren't working out... The last bit is what scares me, and I have to say that I don't really feel like a believer right now.

edit: and one more point! How long did it take a Fulham in need of an equaliser to get one? They didn't need two thirds of a game!

The sad thing is in the summer we are very likely to see 2-3 of our most technical players leave. Im gonna be fully disappointed because those players would thrive under a manager who enjoys entertaining football.

Look boys, the crossing strategy is bound to pay off at some point. No team can withstand the 90mins barrage of youraggressive crossing. It requires determination, tenacity and discipline. FFS.. Just do it!

Fellaini.

I genuinely do think that him+one of rooney/van persie would have done better up front than rooney & van persie could have hoped.

Hopefully Moyes will come to the same conclusion.

In my dreams i'm imagining our team going to war akin the helicopter attack scene in Apocalypse Now, with the Ride of the Valkyries theme booming in the background, instead of anhiliating the village with missles its with our crosses.

Found on this Man Utd Fans facebook page. (Some nutter changed it to benny hill theme )

'Manchester United’s tactics against us were like ‘Conference football’, says Fulham's Dan Burn'

 when the Fulham backroom staff start taking the piss you know there's a problem.

Even nothing players are taking turns laughing at us now.

Moyes is destroying us.

I do not understand Moyes as a tactician. If he is going to adopt this one dimensional, predictable formation, shouldn't he at least play players that suits such system? Isn't that how to get the best out of your gameplan?

Instead of Mata, play Valencia. Same with Hernandez in place of van Persie and Fellaini in place of Rooney(but Rooney in midfield since he can probably find Valencia blindfolded). Moyes has shown glimpse of tactical acumen most notably against Swansea in the second half, but his tendency to resort back to what he feels most comfortable with is a habit that he needs to get rid of if things are to improve.

I wouldn't mind if he persisted with these tactics so long as they were proving somewhat effective; but they're clearly not. The most worrying this is that we practically have nothing to play for now so it is an ideal time to try a new and fresh approach or some interesting tactics but this seems to be the way he wants us playing long term. If that's the case I really don't want him here.

We've a Fulham player commentating on our conference like tactics. How can anyone be on Moyes' side at this stage?

Fulham defender Dan Burn on Man Utd's approach: "I've not headed that many balls since the Conference!"

It's ridiculous, isn't it.

I'm still trying to get my head round yesterday, it doesn't seem real. Teams can favour a certain approach or playing style and this season we've seen how much we've focused on wing play. The heat map someone posted this past week shows that as well as the stat that we are bottom in terms of attacking through the middle out of the all the teams in the league. But yesterday was like an obscene parody of our complaints of our wingplay this season. 80 fecking crosses! Yielding relatively little reward too.

I don't know what is happening with Moyes. He's a perfectly capable manager, he proved that at Everton and while many things that have happened this season could be attributed to his limits, yesterday was boggling. You don't instruct your team to play like that for so long without getting them to change, not if you have at least a clue of what you are doing.

David Moyes should be charged by the FA for bringing the game into disrepute.

I'm firmly in the, or well, I was firmly in the keep Moyes camp and give him time. But I'll admit, my "faith" is being tested long before I thought it would. I don't mind struggling or even not making top 4 (which would be disastrous) - if there were clear signs of improvement or even a response from the players.

Through all the success we had under SAF & obviously it was a sad day losing him (but we knew it was inevitable), I must admit, I was a little bit excited to see things being freshened up. You know, maybe implementing or moving to a fresher approach to keep in touch with "modern football" (not a slight on SAF at all). The pressing high up the pitch. Changing things up from a standard 4-4-2. Less traditional wingers etc.

I actually thought Moyes had these tools in his locker because his Everton team was decent and by all accounts, he was a fairly meticulous/detailed guy. Hard working, young. With classier players (a bit debatable but they are the reigning EPL champions) at his disposal etc, maybe he could just make that step up. Safe to say, I've been left disappointed. We've looked clueless, directionless, devoid of any ideas/confidence and totally uninspired. It all kind of culminated yesterday with 86 crosses in 1 match. I still look at that stat with disbelief and a smile. It's surreal.

That, IMO, stems directly from the manager and the players belief in him. I'm still hoping he turns it around. As a United fan, there'd be nothing sweeter. But with every passing week and "game plan" - it's looking more and more unlikely. He's just not able to be innovative or inspiring, by the looks of it. And what really grates me even more each week is seeing Neville and Round's faces on the bench...when we're trailing a match and they're just clueless.

End of rant.
