David Luiz set to become world's most expensive defender

Madness. I think he's better than most give him credit for, and has already shown for Brazil that he has some talent, but £48m? Insane.
i think the same, he's underrated, and a great player really, but 50 m is just insanity. PSG already have an extremely solid defence with thiago silva - alex da costa, they need better fullbacks and wingers, not wasting their money and ffp space on another defender.

Im actually finding this amusing. All those that bashed him over the years can now watch as he is sold for 48 million and is a starter for the Brazillian team and could well win the world cup.

Meanwhile we sell two bit part players for nearly 90 million and buy some worldies!

He's still crap though. Andy Carroll didn't suddenly become an amazing striker because Liverpool spunked £35 million on him and he got a few England caps.

As if they care about that..

Never will I understand this transfer fee, utter madness. Worst thing is that it will set a bad precedent for future transfers. Arghh..good deal for Chelsea though. Mourinho himself probably can't believe it.

If you actually rated him you would be upset about him leaving.

So, between Luiz, Mata and De Bruyne, Chelsea will have £100m+ burning a hole in their pocket before Roman even puts his hand into his.

wait till Utd hit the market with their kitty...clubs know they will be desperate and with no CL football to offer Utd could well be held to ransome and pay over the odds

They must have been in a bidding war with Barcelona otherwise they could have offered £30m and Mourinho would have taken it.

I agree, but at this point I just think Barcelona's board are a bunch of retarded pricks, they could have gotten thiago silva for far less money LAST summer, and thiago silva WANTED to join them, but barca turned him down for wages. utter stupidity. Now they get in a 30m+ bidding war for david luiz? what a bunch of asshats.

Just goes to show that sometimes reporters are very much correct even if they are not proven right instantly. The moment Mourinho joined Chelsea last year reporters in Spain said he didn't want Mata and David Luiz. Some laughed it off. Well....

Is it just me or is there something fishy about this transfer?

£48m for a central defender who is not even a first choice player

One Oil club paying another

Chelsea struggling with FFP and need a cash injection

"You do the math"

are they? quite comfortable with it by all accounts

I thought it was PSG rather than Chelsea struggling with it, this transfer being a big two fingers up at UEFA.

Is there anyone who thinks this is a good move for PSG?

I'm not sure they need him in the first place. For that price, it is mental either way. I would be furious if I was a PSG fan but then again I don't know what it feels like to have endless money.

PSG fans are seemingly happy. They don't quite understand the transfer but they all think he's a world class defender, and they seem completely blasé about transfer fees, so they're just happy.

Sorry but that comes across very bad.
As PSG(the owners) wants to say: we give a f*** about FFP and just get our man with huge cash.
Could backfire harshly. They didnt do anything to prevent the first sanctions.
Not learned their lesson?

Could you do a top 50 fan favorite Chelsea players please?
impossible....but Luiz was 'loved' a lot more by the foreign fanbase than the UK one
If you want current players...then the match goers views are in the main different from the UK based TV watchers whose views are different from the worldwide lot.

This isn't arms length. I can't work out what is wrong with it, but it's not a legitimate transfer. There's no way Chelsea asked for £48m before they'd sell Luiz. Bollocks.

Depends how much Barca really wanted him. If they did then maybe there was a bidding war?

A bidding war....for Luiz....between Barca and PSG....and a fee of 48m....for Luiz. You can't make it up. Did I mention that it's for David Luiz?

They're just getting back around what they paid for him aren't they? £21m + Matic, and they bought Matic back for around £21m so it's pretty close to that £48m figure. They weren't going to sell him on a loss.

Most amazing thing is that two teams have essentially paid £40m+ for David Luiz.

Matic wouldn't have played much if he'd stayed at Chelsea. His value wouldn't have changed.

There were also rumours that Guardiola wanted him at Bayern

This is really setting the market at inflated prices early in the transfer window. If Luiz is worth £50m then Suarez is prob a £120m player by comparison. Could be a crazy summer.

:wenger:

The way I see it is that he's a decent DM and a liability as a CB. Either I know nothing about football or the transfer market has gone mental. He is no where near good enough for that price tag.

He'd be a liability up front I think. What a rubbish player.

Lol This is insane I wouldn't pay 50,000,000 pounds for Hummels and he's better than Luiz. What are P$G thinking? And what is UEFA going to do about this absurdity? They should start penalizing clubs for attempting stupid transfers.
