There might be more to this than meets the eye, seems dodgy. I'm most probably talking bollocks here but I find it hard to believe any club would be so daft as to pay such a sum for him.

If not, then what a deal for Chelsea. We should have offered them van Buyten for a bargain price of £25m.

Anyone think they might be buying him to play CM?

I was surprised by how excellent he was playing there under Benitez, Mourinho didn't know how to get the best out of him but he has the potential to be a monster of a centre mid.

They just bought Cabaye, though. And have Verratti, Matuidi, and Motta.

Something fishy is going on between Chelsea and PSG. PSG are supposedly listening to offers for Lavezzi, Cavani and Pastore, I wonder if there's a connection.

Great deal for us, he may be a great player but I still think we got the better deal. Jose will get some players in that are his to put his stamp on things next season, and we can romp to the title. Yaya, Costa, Cavani and Pogba are ours!

 Nice try, chief. :D

Wonder will this lead to Thiago Silva to Barca, which has been rumoured for ages?

This deal makes no sense. Chelsea would've been happy with half the reported transfer fee. I can't believe PSG opened with an offer of 40 million for David fecking Luiz.

The transfer fee is pure madness and PSG showing FFP a gigantic middle finger. Congratulations to Chelsea for this fantastic deal!

Meanwhile we bought Fellaini for 27m and I don't think we'd be able to sell him for anything more than 15m. We bought Young for 18 and we'd be lucky to get 10m. We bought Berba for 31m and sold him for 5.

It's not entirely the same situation but Ronaldo apart, we don't seem to ever get good money for the players we sell (and some argue Ronaldo should've cost more...)

We'd be lucky to sell Young for more than £3 million.

It was ridiculous that Chelsea paid as much as they did for him originally, but this is fairly insane. I really don't see why he is so highly rated. He always looks to be that he has a mistake in him, be that going forward at a bad time or making a reckless challenge, and can't see how that puts him up there with the elite defenders. It's all well and good being good technically, but I want my defenders to be great at defending first and foremost.

Of course he could play midfield, but he hasn't played there that really has he? I know he can, but that doesn't seem enough to warrant a 50 million fee either.

PSG are clearly taking the piss out of UEFA with this as well. Chelsea higher ups will be delighted with this.

Why? It is clear as day that PSG are reuniting the Brazil CB partnership which has been the best in the world for a while now. That is why they are paying over his value for him, they know exactly what they are getting and they now have the best CB partnership in the world at their disposal.

I like the approach really, of course they could have saved money by offering less, but buying quality that is proven in the national team is brilliant and risk free.

Actually cannot believe my eyes, at the same point this is highly frustrating. I know we have no manager, but Chelsea are once again nailing business early, and efficiently. This news only broke this morning and it's done before the end of the day.
Who doesn't have a manager? Man United?

We don't have a manager, 'on the job'.
Which isn't that big a deal in this instance. Woodward and his team will be doing most of the leg work in transfers. Van Gaal will have already given his list of targets and work will have started on them. If anything happens, he's a phone call/skype call away. The manager's just there as the navigator these days.

Woodwards a plank.

 Incredible amount of money spent right there. Shaw to Chelsea seems nailed on now.

If he was a Utd player I would have been happy enough to let him off for 10 or 12 million. He's heading on 28 so he's well on the other side of the hill now.

A shocking amount of money that from PSG for him. There must be something else behind it, future transfers or deals between the two clubs maybe either that or a bit of book cooking because no way is he worth that.

£21m.....not bad at the time

He has certain qualities and he brings to the table things that can prove pretty useful for any manager. In the midfield area he can close down opponents, he can block key passes, he can become the extra man in those tight midfield areas and help his team regain possession everywhere on the pitch and he's very good in the air. As a CB his lack of concentration has cost Chelsea several times, but then again he and Silva can form a very strong/fast pairing at the back for PSG and give them the opportunity to play with a high defensive line in the big CL matches next season.

Of course Blanc will face problems within the squad with having to drop either Alex or Motta to fit Luiz in the starting xi, but this certainly is a transfer which can help PSG in the CL next season. If you asked me, i would have gone for a different CB or midfielder who would fit better in this PSG side but it's crazy to see some of our fans here on the Cafe laughing at Luiz while praising Smalling, Evans or even Jones at the same time.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, it's just that football has changed a lot since 2009 and Barcelona imo. The majority of the big clubs choose to play with a high defensive line and press high up the pitch. If you want these tactics to work properly you need defensive players who are good in 1v1 situations and who can intercept key passes and close down opponents. David Luiz ticks all these boxes. Add in the mix the fact that he is going to be a starter for Brazil in a WC year and that he leaves the best League in the world to play in Ligue 1 and you'll understand why PSG had to break the bank for him.

I thought BBC was reliable, it says 40. 50 is just cheating. Luiz surely isn't worth even half of it.
my typo..its 40m standard fee with 10m add ons.

and by the way..The BBC is just as bad as the rest of them

You don't say. Now who do I trust for my transfer news?

He's a fantastic footballer, but he's not really a centre half, or a midfielder. Wonder how he'd do at full back? I imagine he'll be forming his Brazil partnership next to Thiago Silva though.

Just thinking if PSG give even a tiny f*ck about FFP, they'll need a major sale to try and balance the books.

Maybe Thiago to Barca is already done and Luiz is his replacement.

Just trying to make sense of this mad deal.

It's not exactly a small amount for a defender who was only "proven" in Portugal, which in all fairness isn't the biggest of leagues.
Ok...so any players that are to be signed from porto, sporting or benfica are never proven....even if they are a full Brazilian international

Not at the very top level IMO. That's not to say they aren't or can't be great players just that the Portugese League isn't of the quality of England, Spain, Germany or Italy.
The Brazil team aren't exactly known for their defending so point doesn't hold much value with me I'm afraid. I take it you rate David Luiz as a defender so?

i rate him when he plays for Brazil in the back 3 or 4 (confederations cup).
i take it you do not know too much about football or the strengths of other leagues by assuming that just because you play for brazil, you dont defend very well.
brazil has consistantly produced some of the greatest defenders in world football

A few things about this deal that are just plain stupid.. First of all the deal is just fishy, no way would anyone offer over the odds for a player A. not worth it and B. not in the managers plans. Also if PSG are serious about the bid and believe he's worth that much and will improve them greatly why just strengthen for the French league & cups? They'll be banned from Europe before they have a chance of winning it.
